WILL L. LEE ELMENTARY Issue #1
November 2017
CONTACT INFORMATION
November is a very special month to express “ Tha nks.”N November is a very special month to express “Thanks.” We begin by thanking veterans for their dedication and sacrifices on Veteran’s Day. Lee Elementary will have an assembly on November 13 to express our thanks to the service men and women.
We also get to celebrate Thanksgiving and reflect on all of the parts of our lives we are thankful for. As principal, I am thankful for the dedicated staff that works so hard every day to educate the students. I am thankful for the parents for their support each and every day. I am thankful for each and every student for their smiles and their enthusiasm to learn. I am truly thankful to work in such a great school district and community. Parent teacher conferences were well attended and very powerful conversations have taken place. It is great seeing staff and parents/guardians working as a team to help all students.
The PTO has been very busy since the beginning of the school year. The parents have decorated the front lobby, run the book fair, and organized the chocolate fundraiser. These have been very successful fundraisers to help provide additional activities and supplies for the students and staff at Lee. A big “Thank you” to all of the parents for their time and effort so far this year.
Trunk or Treat was a huge
success despite the weather!
Thank you PTO for organizing
and to the families that donated
candy to be given to the
children!!!
The newsletters will be located
on the Lee Elementary website
and e-mailed to families.
Please check the school website
for the most up-to-date
information.

In the Lee Elementary Computer Lab 3rd and 4th grade students have been learning how to read and write code
using the website Hour of Code. This website allows students to think and plan out ways to make their character
move about the computer screen. Through their mistakes they process how to write the correct code to have the
outcome they desire. To some students this is very difficult work. So when they succeed after multiple attempts I
see a lot of high fives and arms waving. I tell them the only way you succeed is to make mistakes and learn from
them. When coding the students know that when they make mistakes they are just that much closer to success.
Find the Hour of Code link
AT A GLANCE
November 13th from 4-7 pm is McStaff Night at McDonald's to raise money for our PBIS program. The Lee Staff will be assisting McDonald’s employees!
“Learning to write code stretches your mind, and helps you think better, creates a way of
thinking about things that I think is helpful in all domains”.

We have had fun on our half days so far. We have played minute to win it games, paper bag stem activities,
making pumpkin pie with paper, making feathers for our turkey in the hallway and played color tag and pac-man
in the gym. We played parachute games outside and on the playground.
We do try to go outside everyday so with the weather changing please make sure you dress your child
appropriately. If the weather conditions prevent us from going outside we will be going in the Gym or cafeteria for
gross motor activities.

Student Council - by Katie VanSledright
Student Council has planned a year full of activities! Our first meeting in September was an introduction to
Student Council and what it means to be a Student Council Representative. In October, we held elections for
president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. Our officers this year are President Jacob Hill, Vice President
Nathan Fraley, Secretary Gwen McCoy, and Secretary Sophia Jackson. This month, we’re preparing for our
December activities. Information will be coming home towards the end of the month, but we will be working with
the organization Sandy’s Kids to collect new toys for families in need in our school/community. This collection
will take place in the beginning of December. We will also be holding our annual fundraiser in December. We
will be selling Smencils, or smelly pencils, during lunches again. Students will be able to purchase the Smencils
for themselves, friends, or family members in our school. Again, more information will come home towards the
end of the month about our holiday collection and fundraiser. We’re looking forward to a good year!

On the last Friday of each month, the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports) committee has a True
Blue assembly. Each teacher picks one boy and one girl who has shown the PBIS behaviors (Respectful,
Responsible, and Safe). Two grade levels meet in the cafeteria and the teachers recognize the students and explain
why the students were chosen. The students receive a certificate and a bumper sticker. This is another way that
Lee Elementary supports the PBIS program and recognizes student behavior.
