Selkirk X-Country Track Meet

The X-country season has been busy with practices going Monday, Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:30 till 5:00. The team is the largest we have seen at WMCI for a while, looking to continue to strive for one of those provincial Cross country banners.

The athletes have been training hard for the upcoming meets, and the Zone meet was held on Wed., Sept. 30th in Spruce woods Provincial Park. The weather was perfect and all athletes had very good results, considering that the hilly course was a challenge for them. All individuals placed quite well on the tough course, with many exceptional Zone results. For the girls’ results, Shayla M. finished 2nd in Senior Girls. Sonya S. placed 1st while Torri P. finished 2nd in Junior girls category. Other girls who competed and ran very well were Hanna S., Lindsey S., Ivy W., Kelsey T., Mandy D., Hayley M. and Danielle C.

On the boys side, Quinton P. finished 2nd and Clay F. finished 3rd in the Senior boys category. Other boys who had very good results also included River P., Lucien K., and Zeke K. had a top ten finish in our Zone.

The team will go to Killarney for a meet on October 8th in preparation for the final meet of the year. The team will be back in Spruce woods, where Provincials will be held on October 14th. This will be the final test for the runners who will see how they place within their age group against all the schools, from A to AAAA within the entire province. Good luck to the X-country athletes on the final part of the season.

CAREER CORNER

University of Manitoba— APPLY ONLINE: Applications for fall 2016 admission are available online in October. Students must self-report their anticipated Grade 12 marks when filling out the application, and also pay a $90 application fee. Visit umanitoba.ca/applynow.

Grade 12 Deadlines—Ms. Watson will be at WMCI on October 7 to assist with applications, scholarship search-ing, etc. If you are in Grade 12 and have any questions, please stop by Room 11 (parents welcome!)

COLLEGE: Grade 12s planning to attend College programs should apply ASAP; programs fill up on a first come first served basis. Check out the admission requirements on the web or speak with Mrs. Buffi or Ms. Watson.

UNIVERSITY: Applications open Oct. 1st – final deadlines vary from institution to institution. It is best to apply prior to Dec. 1st, 2015 if you wish to be considered for scholarships, etc.

SCHOLARSHIPS —scholarships and bursaries can offset your post-secondary expenses; they are dependent on community involvement, strong academics and a number of other factors. Please check out the www.manitobacareerdevelopment.ca site for links and be sure to check the scholarship section of the institu-tion you are interested in.

SPEND A DAY – Colleges and universities encourage students to visit their campuses and see firsthand what they have to offer. So take advantage of the many ‘Spend a Day’ opportunities and make an informed decision! Check the websites or bulletin board for more information.

SAFE WORKERS – Grade 9 presentations Oct. 19th, Management Practicum Oct. 19th.

Grade 9 Take Your Our Kids to Work Day – forms were sent home and must be returned by Friday, October 14th. Check the information on www.thelearningpartnership.ca. If you are unable to spend the day with a par-ent, feel free to ask a community member or family / friend; just be sure you get the consent signed.

High School Apprenticeship – Earn While You Learn! Eight credits and a Technical Vocation certificate can be achieved with completion of 880 hours. Students may then continue into regular apprenticeship at the post-secondary level. Two credits earned at the high school level equal one level of technical training following grad-uation. Please see Ms. Watson if you have questions, or need a package to take to perspective employers.

Career Technology Studies (CTS) — CTS creates personalized learning opportunities for students by providing them with community-based learning experiences (Internship). This type of authentic learning environment, in combination with in-school programming, is designed to meet the needs of students and promote a sustainable future for our communities. CTS students can obtain credits toward graduation by participating in courses that are part of approved CTS pathways. Management Skills 40S is a course that is approved in all three pathways and is a prerequisite for all other community-based Internships. Community-based Internship agreements are voluntary, unpaid positions, and Apprenticeship agreements are paid positions.
