Thank you: Parent Opinion Survey Each year, the Department seeks parent/carer feedback about the school. This forms part of the data used to monitor how schools are meeting the needs of students and their families. This year we had 54 responses — our highest ever number of responses. Thank you for your time and feedback that you provided. Transition/Meet the teacher The process for students transitioning into a new class can be unsettling. On Tuesday, 8 December, year 6 students head off to secondary schools to have their orientation day. On this day we will also be having our Meet your 2020 teacherday. This is an important time to model resilience and reassure your child that it is normal to feel unsure and even anxious in new circumstances. Share some of your own positive memories about starting in a new class (or secondary school). It can be reassuring for a child to know that you went through a similar experience and survived. Show confidence in your childs ability to be resilient. Confidence is catching. Student reports The Department of Education and Training has adjusted the expectations of student reports for semester 2 in recognition of term 3’s remote and flexible learning. While our school has continued to deliver its teaching and learning program, and monitor the achievement and progress of each student, there have been some unprecedented changes to our usual program. Student reports go home on Thursday, 10 December. The student reports will consist of: Victorian Curriculum judgements for English and mathematics A teacher comment about your child including a statement about your childs self-identified proudest achievement and challenge Your childs attendance record for the semester Checklist-style report for English and mathematics A generic statement about the learning in science, visual arts and Italian. Optional parent/teacher interviews Parents and carers have the option to speak to the classroom teacher about their childs report. On this day we will also be having our ‘Meet your 2020 teacher’ day.

This is an important time to model resilience and reassure your child that it is normal to feel unsure and even anxious in new circumstances. Share some of your own positive memories about starting in a new class (or secondary school). It can be reassuring for a child to know that you went through a similar experience and survived. Show confidence in your child’s ability to be resilient. The student reports will consist of:

• Victorian Curriculum judgements for English and mathematics

• A teacher comment about your child including a statement about your child’s self-identified proudest achievement and challenge

• Your child’s attendance record for the semester

• Checklist-style report for English and mathematics

• A generic statement about the learning in science, visual arts and Italian. Optional parent/teacher interviews Parents and carers have the option to speak to the classroom teacher about their child’s report. A 10-minute interview (by telephone or by WebEx) can be organised at a mutually convenient time within the teacher’s regular work hours:

• Until 4:40 pm on Thursday, 17 December.

There will be no parent/teacher interviews on the last day of school. Last day of term 4 Students will be dismissed at 1:00 pm on Friday, 18 December (the last day of term 4). Students are still expected to attend school on the last day. Donald Eddington Principal

William Ruthven Primary School is a Child Safe school.

We are committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our students.

To find out more about the Child Safe Standards, visit:

williamruthvenps.vic.edu.au/page/147/Child-Safe-Standards

Protecting children from abuse is everyone’s responsibility.

Please note: It is now mandatory for schools to call parents/carers when a child is absent from school. So if your child is away, and you have not told us, you will receive a call from the school to ask about your child’s whereabouts. If we are unable to contact you, we are required to make contact with the nominated emergency contacts on your child’s file.

If your child is absent from school, parents/carers are required to contact us — on the morning of the absence. There are currently three ways to contact the school if your child is absent.

Tell us in person Text us on 0456 429 161

Ray White Real Estate (Reservoir), in partnership with the Salvation Army, run a ‘Little Ray of Giving’ campaign that distributes toys to children who may otherwise not receive presents at Christmas. You can support the campaign by donating a new toy. There will be a box at the office where your toy donations can be left. Ray White will collect the donations on Mon-day, 14 December and they will be taken to the Salvation Army for distribution.

School uniform

Based on community feedback and the Department of Education and Training’s policy template, our school has a new uniform policy. The policy can be accessed via: https://www.williamruthvenps.vic.edu.au/uploaded_files/media/1605768333uniform_policy.pdf.

Early dismissal on the last day of school

Students finish at 1:00 pm on Friday, 18 December - the last day of term.

Reminder: Celebration Night @ home via WebEx

Families are invited to contribute a family photograph for a music video being putting together for Celebration Night.

What to do:

1. Take a landscape (long ways) photograph of your family,

2. Email your photo by 3:00 pm Friday, 27 November, to: [email protected].

Families can sing along to the songs at home by following the words on the screen. Class and school awards, as well as the announcement of the 2021 School Captains, will take place between the songs.

The night begins promptly at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, 2 December via Donald Eddington’s WebEx room: https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/eddington.donald.f.

Reminder: 2021 Parent payments/essential learning items

Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring that their children are provided with essential learning items.

Parents and carers have the option of purchasing the items themselves, or purchasing them from the school. Payment plan arrangements are available through the school.

In 2021, the Essential Student Learning Levy for all year levels (Prep – Year 6) is $110.00. If payment is made by Friday, 18 December 2020 the levy is $99.00.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF)

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to activities for the benefit of your child. New applicants should contact the office to obtain a CSEF application form or download one from https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/programs/Pages/csef.aspx.

If you applied for the CSEF at our school in 2020, you do not need to complete an application form in 2021 unless a change in your family’s circumstances has occurred, such as:

• Your child has started or changed schools in 2021 or you did not apply in 2020,

• There has been a change of custody, a change of name, a change of concession card number, or new siblings are commencing at the school in 2021.

2/3A, 3/4A and 3/4B work Page 4

2/3A students were required to generate their own questions based on the text they had read. The focus of the learning was to develop deeper-level questions that require more detailed answers.

In 3/4A, we have been practising our skills in multiplication and division. This has included revising the extended multiplication method and the ‘chipping away’ method for division. These books display fantastic book work with sums that are set out in red pen and working out in grey lead.

Over the past fortnight, we have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather in the OSHClub Garden. The children have been weeding, planting and even harvesting some of the ripe vegetables, including our giant carrot and some of the super sweet cherry tomatoes. The children are really enjoying learning about how veggies grow, and keeping a garden alive and thriving. We also started a small Spoonville in our garden and the children got to create and place their own Spoonville characters. Community enrichment project – It’s In the Bag

We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our families this week with both the Innes family and the Merrilees family each donating two bags to this wonderful cause, thank you!
