It was a warm afternoon. I stood overmy mom and dad’s grave, staring at themound of dirt that wasn’t even settled yetfrom the funeral. I thought I should saysomething, but I didn’t really know whatto say. I wondered if they could really hearme anyway.I noticed around me several other peoplegathering to visit their family members, soI observed to gather some hint of the cor-rect measure in which to communicate. One young lady just sat down and beganto tell her father about her day. Another fel-low laid and cried. Some children wereplaying hide and seek behind the head-stones.I thought that was very rude. But one old gentleman wandered up thehill. He gently laid his flowers across thefront his wife’s grave. He was almost deadstill for over an hour, never speaking aword.

I guess there is no perfect rule for re-membering your loved ones, but it is veryinteresting to observe all the differentmethods. I don’t go back to the cemetery any-more.Not because I don’t love my family, butbecause I think it’s up to each individualhow they mourn and how they remember.I guess some would think that rather disre-spectful, I hope not. But I do understandwhy people go on their own and in theirown way. This Memorial Day will probably holdthe same pattern for me. We will go andcut and dress the cemeteries of my dad’sfamily and of my father-in-law’s family aswell. I will be saddened by their absenceand will continue to respect my dad’swishes to take care of the cemetery. I will smile as I walk away remember-ing my childhood when we thought clean-

ing the cemeteries was a day of fun andtravel as those other children. We always stop and get a bottle of popand some snacks on the way home. I did-n’t realize then what an honor it was to bea part of such dedication and respect forfamily. I now know what a disappointmentit is for the men and women who havecome for year to keep this tradition andnow are not able for reasons of health orcircumstance,

I thank you for your steadfastness in thistradition and I promise you I will try mybest to continue it for as long as my healthholds up. I will also encourage my chil-dren to do the same. Maybe if you read this article, it will re-mind you of the great joy it brings ourelder family members to see you carry onthis precious traditions that mean so muchto them.It might also encourage you to imaginetheir conversations as they thank God foryour willingness to keep up the goodwork. Be with your families this MemorialDay and if you can’t, at least call them andlet them know that you are going to dowhatever you can to keep their memoriesflowing in the glory of your loved oneswho have gone on before. Please remember, because I know theywould.

A fly on the wallWEEKLY DEVOTION

I can remember so vividly the sound ofmy mother yelling about dusk: ”Come on!In the house and get your bath". Thosewere the most feared words in the Englishlanguage to a 10-year-old boy in the mid-dle of July. Now when my mom said thesewords what I heard was: ”You’ve gotabout twenty more minutes of play time;make it count. One more game of basket-ball or one more inning of baseball, or thenext one scores wins at football". I didwhat ever I could to evade that awful timecalled ’a bath'! Like most everybody elsein Hardy, we all ended up in troublebecause we heard something completelydifferent than what was told. When mydad said you need to take out the garbageor some other chore, what I heard was

”make yourself scarce and don’t lookback". If you are not around you have aperfect alibi.

One of the most popular commercialson T.V. was a statement about E.F.Hutton. It would always depict severalpeople in a situation when one personwould say, E.F. Hutton says, and thewhole crowd would go completely silent.Either way, we kind of hear what we wantto. It’s easy to justify this by calling itselective hearing. Some say it’s even ahearing problem, perhaps another dis-ease! I don’t know, but what I do know isthat my wife and my mother have mepegged when it comes to knowing if I’mpaying attention.

What this all means to us today is that

we must be careful when God speaks to usin His word. What He says is far morevaluable than any other person on Earth. His deity is greater than the foreknowl-

edge of our parents or spouse or anybody else. We here at the congregation atHardy sing the song, I can hear theSavior calling, and every time it sendschills up the back of my neck. What athrill to know that Jesus Himself will oneday call us home to that perfect placecalled Heaven. That’s why the impor-tance of hearing His call now is vital.Paul says to make our calling and elec-tion sure. While this is great advice ithinges on our willingness to obey whatwe hear. I could have made things a loteasier with my Mom and you can makeyour life better if you will listen to God.Read and listen, then do it. Just like Iknew I needed a bath, I know what Godwants to do. Hear me, He says!

Do you hear what I hear?

Today’s Answers

HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Saturday, May 28, 2011:

This year, your enthusiasm and spontaneity dominate. You usually land well, manifesting what you want, even if you didn’t try. Friends evolve to an even higher priority. Many of you get into networking even more. If you are single, you could meet someone through a friend, or a friendship could become more. If you are attached, the more the two of you socialize as a couple, the closer you become. ARIES knows how to get you going.

The Stars Show the Kind of Day You’ll Have: 5-Dynamic; 4-Positive; 3-Average; 2-So-so; 1-Difficult

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Listen to your instincts.

Know that you also are carrying a lucky rabbit’s foot in your back pocket. Don’t hesitate to take a leap of faith, especially if it involves travel or someone at a distance. Tonight: Impulsiveness suits you.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You continue to be more

comfortable with a less-visible stance. In fact, you could be happy simply being a couch potato. Stay away from crowds, though one special person might be most pleased to be with you. Go along with a suggestion. Tonight: Why not add a little romance?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Zero in on others in

general. Get together with friends for a spontaneous barbecue or to watch a ballgame. Whatever your choice, everyone will have a great time. Your popularity soars no matter what your status is. Stay open to new ideas. Tonight: You are the party.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Whether you are leader of

the gang or have some important community or professional commit-ment, you cannot seem to relax. You have enough energy to do what you must, and even more as well. Loosen up with a long-time friend as soon as you can. Tonight: Take care of your-self.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) The urge for adventure

cannot be suppressed. Even if you don’t leave town, you can choose to experience a new type of activity or happening. Some of you might opt for an escape and go to a concert or a movie. Tonight: Let your mind wander.

IRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) A partnership or a get-

together with friends continues to be

high profile. You update your perspec-tive, and maybe your look, because of a friend. Discussions could be intense, but they serve you in a deep way. Tonight: Love the one you are with.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might feel liberated

from the recent seriousness. The peo-ple who surround you make it clear they won’t deal with negativity. Your ability to transform and adapt to dif-ferent situations emerges once more. Tonight: So many people, so many possibilities.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Include a physical sport or

some exercise in your plans. You might decide to walk rather than drive when running errands. Some of you might organize a softball game, while others get involved in another favorite pastime. A fit body is as important as a fit mind. Tonight: Roll with the moment.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Others really appreciate

and enjoy being around you. Full of energy, you might decide to go hiking or perhaps to socialize in the manner in which most of your friends would choose. Tonight: Cupid’s arrow could strike!

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)Whether indulging yourself

or your family, you appear happiest close to home. Make an effort to draw in a loved one. Sometimes the people in your life are so strong that the remaining few might feel like shrink-ing violets! Tonight: Keep it close and intimate.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your juggling of differ-

ent activities, people and needs could keep you busy. Many people are very happy to visit, even if it is for a short period. Catch up on a neighbor’s news, even if you would prefer to do something else. Join friends for a late lunch and a movie. Tonight: Hanging out with the gang.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You simply might not care

as your spending goes unchecked. Though you remain optimistic about a professional situation or some other situation bringing in funds, the wise Fish will not spend until they see the funds. Remain tuned in to someone who cares about you and not this extravaganza. Tonight: Being noticed wherever you are.Jacqueline Bigar is on the Internet at
