While there is no shortage of funactivities at the Ocean Beach StreetFair, the day’s signature event is easi-ly the chili cook-off feature, whichtakes place at Veterans’ Plaza at thefoot of Newport Avenue.

If you like chili, there will be no bet-ter place to sample variations on thedelicacy than at this year’s street fair.

Tasting begins at 11 a.m., thoughthe line starts forming at 10 a.m.

Tickets for tasting and judging thevarious entries run $1 for two serv-ings, or you can get a People’s Choiceticket for $20, allowing you to sampleall of the team’s chili offerings.

This year, there will be almost twodozen competitors in two categories— restaurant and amateur — withjudging based on consistency, smell, color and taste.

Both meat and vegetarian chili willbe available. But, you’re advised to getthere early.

Even with almost 60 gallons of chilifrom such local restaurants as ShadesOceanfront Bistro and Craves Cafe, alongside 10 gallons each from thecontestants, it’s all gone by 2 p.m. —if not before.

The event was founded in 1984 by current OBMA boardof directors member Mike Akey, who comes from a long lineof chili enthusiasts, including his father, Angie Scaramuz-zo.

He is the event’s chief judge. According to Akey, it’s pret-ty easy to tell who has the best chili on competion day.

“If you watch the lines, you can tell which one is mostpopular,” he said. “The longer the line, the more people thatthink it’s good.”

He said the teams of chilimakers go all out in order towin. And that doesn’t always just apply to the recipes.

“Some people dress up for this and they’ll have a theme fortheir booth,” Akey said.

“They get the people there involved. It’s like a big showthe whole time. The people are voting for their chili, so youwant to get their attention. They go all-out for that,” hesaid.

As for those secret chili recipes, he points out that exoticingredients still pop up in some dishes, but not as often,

“Pretty much those days are over,” he said. “You hearabout someone using rattlesnake and so on. People now usemore common sense and shoot for winning.”

Winners also get prize money and a framed plaque. After three decades of work with the chili cook-off, does

Akey still like the stuff? “Yes,” he laughed. “But not all year.”

“The longer the line, the more people that

think it’s good.”

Kids have their special area at the street fair too!People of all ages will flock to the

street fair’s Wonderland area, located atthe 4800 block of Newport Avenue.

It’s actually hard to miss, with its col-orful inflatables and giant slide settingthe tone.

Named for a groundbreaking amuse-ment park which once stood in the areamore than 100 years ago, Wonderlandvisitors will find a multitude of attrac-tions to keep the young — and young atheart — occupied the whole day.

Parent will find plenty to keep theirlittle ones ages 3 to 10 busy, with some-thing on hand to spark just about anychild’s imagination.

The star attraction is, as always, thepony rides, sure to elicit a picture-per-fect moment. But there will also be toycars, a bounce house, a merry-go-round and many more smile-inducingactivities, making the area a one-stopstop for those with childre. The area’samenities are also kid friendly, with lotsof treats available, from healthy optionsto summertime favorites like cottoncandy and sno cones. There will evenbe a magician, face painting andmimes to entertain.

Meanwhile, the merely young atheart will find attractions such as theaforementioned cliffhanger slide, a rockclimbing wall and various inflatableobstacle courses.

The activities are not only a lot offun, but also get the adrenaline pump-ing.

New this year will be the “RuggedWarrior Mega Obstacle Course,” a 120-foot inflatable challenge, witheight separate sections.

“Kids are going to be naturally moredrawn to them, but they are definitelyfor all ages,” said Greg Knight, owner ofSan Diego Kids Party Rentals, which isproviding 14 attractions this year.

Also new are the Euro Bungy Tram-polines, with up to four guests able tobounce into the air at once.

Sure to be among the most popularattractions is the “Wipeout Game,”which features eight contestants try-

ing to avoid a revolving beam and beingknocked off a perch. This promises to bealmost as much fun to watch as to par-ticipate in.

“It’s great to see the excitement inpeoples face when they are on some-thing new; it’s almost similar to seeinga new ride at Disneyland,” he said.“There is a sense of anticipation. In thiscase, people have seen Wipeout on TVand think, ‘I could do that.’ Now theycan try.”

Knight noted one new attraction hefeels will draw particular attention.

“You’ve have heard of a mechanicalbull? Well, we have a mechanical shark, the only one on the West Coast. It actu-ally fits the OB theme nicely,” he said.

The artistic touch very much a thread of the street fair’s fabricOne of the things that sets the Ocean Beach

Street Fair apart from others of its kind is itsArtists’ Alley, full of arts, crafts and their cre-ators.

Other fairs have vendors, but here great careis taken to only include handmade items.

Someone buying a gift in Artists’ Alley willtruly be giving something unique. Runningalong at least two blocks of Cable Street at New-port Avenue, fairgoers will find everything fromjewelry to paintings, clothing to musical instru-ments, all handmade and with the artist in atten-dance.

The latter point is particularly important toorganizer Faren Shear.

“That’s something special you won’t find atother street fairs,” Shear said. “Here, almostevery booth has the artist right there. If there’ssomething you like, perhaps you can have it cus-tomized or have something made just for you. It’spossible, because the person who made it is avail-able to you.”

Shear has been organizing Artists’ Alley for 11years and is proud of the area’s popularity

growth in recent years. For 2014, 75 vendors will be on hand, with

more than 50 percent returning from past streetfairs.

With years of organizing experience, Shearhas noticed several trends in art.

“I inherited the position, assisting the previousorganizer, so I’ve seen a lot of shifts,” she said.

Shear said that more men than ever are nowinvolved in arts and crafts and that it’s a youngergroup of artists as well.

“We’re seeing a lot more things like T-shirtsand posters and so on, as well as photographers. There are a few that are into three-dimensionalart, like ceramics and so on, but T-shirts are real-ly popular. You’ll always see a crowd aroundthose booths.”

For Shear, the best part of organizing Artists’Alley has been watching artists grow. “At theend of the show, I do like to go around and seehow the various artists did,” she said. “It’s alwaysnice to hear when someone had a good day. Butwhat I like the most is seeing various returningartists year to year. It’s fun seeing everybody likethis event enough to make a point to comeback,” Shear said. “So, I look forward to seeingpeople each year and seeing what they’ve made

While the chili is oh-so-popular andthe ocean is always an irresistible draw, the biggest attraction at each year’s streetfair is the music. Scattered across fivestages, visitors will be entertained byeverything from folk to hip-hop and a lotof variety in between.

Ted Wigler, who books bands at Win-ston’s Beach Club and the 710 BeachClub, and Michael Head of Head TrapRecording Studios, say the 2014 OceanBeach Street Fair will feature music by37 performers.

“We try to include as big a variety ofmusic as possible,” said Head. “We wantthings to be as entertaining as possible, while offering up options for music fans toexplore our local music community.”

He said the performers are mostly cho-sen by online submissions or press kits. While bands from all over are welcome, being from Ocean Beach does have itsadvantages.

“I would say 95 percent of the artistsare local,” said Head. “Close to 50 per-cent are OB or OB-related bands andartists.”

This is Head’s fourth year of bookingafter two decades of on-and-off involve-ment. While outdoor gigs can be tricky, allthat experience pays off when it comes to

making things run smoothly. “We are lucky to have good weather

in OB year-round,” he said. “The soundcan be a challenge, but we have some ofthe best audio and stage people around.”

The stages mix a variety of artists witha bit of a theme to them.

For example, the Artists’ Alley Stagefeatures a heavy blues influence.

“I feel good, traditional and modernblues is slightly underrepresented in SanDiego. I hope this helps,” he said.

The bill will be topped by The Red LotusRevue at 6 p.m.

The Wonderland Stage includes singer-songwriters and acoustic acts, with fea-tured sets from troubadour Dave Gilbertat 2 p.m. and funky rockers Markland at6 p.m.

The Bacon Sun stage will feature rockwith a touch of world music, includingsinger-songwriter Rich McGee at 10 a.m.and the return of former Ocean Beachresident Chuck Schiele’s group Bad Sci-ence Fiction at 2:15 p.m. among thehighlights.

Meanwhile, the 92107 OB Stage has afocus on Ocean Beach artists, includingsuch favorites as longtime reggae androck favorite Jeff Bloom at 10 a.m. withGrateful Dead tribute band The ElectricWaste Band closing out the stage at 6p.m.

Finally, the Main Stage is possibly themost diverse of the stages and is set toinclude music from former Beat FarmerJoey Harris at 11 a.m., soulful grooversThe Heavy Guilt at 2 p.m. and funky, reg-gae-tinged C-Money at 5:10 p.m.

Ocean Beach resident and singer-song-writer Dave Gilbert said he is happy to beplaying the event to an audience thatincludes folks from all over the world butis particularly pleased to be able to show-case his music in his own neighborhood.

“I love getting to perform live, especial-ly for my friends and neighbors here inthe town where I live, OB,” he said.

35TH ANNUAL OCEAN BEACH STREET FAIR & CHILI COOK-OFF FESTIVALSATURDAY, JUNE 28, 2014 • 10AM - 8PM • OBSTREETFAIR.COM • OCEANBEACHSANDIEGO.COM

Page 10: 2014 SPECIAL EDITION - matchbin …matchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/public/sites/351/assets/IRWE_BC… · 2014 SPECIAL EDITION Lanz Correia (619) ... 6 years in a row ... ous music,

According to Liz Greene, creative director forthe host Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, the street fair “is about celebrating the communi-ty and having fun, so we felt that this game wouldbe the perfect way to do that. The game wasunveiled at the end of last year’s street fair, and wefelt this was a great way to involve fairgoers insomething that is about the area.”

Among the street fair’s annual highlights arethe ever-popular chili cook-off and five stages ofmusic, as well as the increasingly popular Artist-s’ Alley area. Now taking up two blocks of CableStreet, this part of the street fair has become one

of San Diego’s best spots to find original arts andcrafts.

While the event has things in common withother street fairs, there are also many things thatmake it unique, starting with the fact that it takesplace at the foot of the Pacific Ocean.

However, what truly separates this OceanBeach Street Fair from the others is its neighbor-hood feel.

There are rides and a beer garden, music andfood. But the event is more about celebratingOcean Beach and all it has to offer.

The sense of civic pride is palpable, from theevent’s start to finish, including youngster JaylinBrown singing the national anthem on the92107 stage at 9:50 a.m. and again on the mainstage an hour later.

Other civic-minded activities include theopportunity for eventgoers to participate in thepainting of a community mural.

Other events sure to draw crowds include abikini contest in the beer garden, a Bloody Marycontest between local bars and restaurants andthe first Hodad’s Burger Eating Contest.

The name of the winner of the latter will beplaced on a commemorative license plate andhung in a place of honor at the famed restau-rant.

Years of involvement with the street fairhaven’t dulled Greene’s appreciation for theevent.

“It’s an amazing thing to see the streets closedand the booths and everything going up,” shesaid. “All these people working together to make

it happen. The speed of the whole thing is amaz-ing,” she said. “And by midnight, thanks to thathard-working crew, everything is back to nor-mal.”

Anyone hoping to avoid traffic on event daywill want to take advantage of the four free trol-leys running continually every half-hourthroughout the day, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Guests can park their cars at two outer parkinglots (Robb Field and the Sunrunner lot at PacificHighway and Sea World Drive) and shuttle direct-ly to the street fair.

The drop-off is right at Artists’ Alley. Meanwhile, those heading to the street fair on

their bicycles will find a valet service in front ofWinston’s Beach Club on Bacon Street, courtesyof the Bicycle Coalition.

concert? “I do to a certain extent,” Gilbert said. “But Obe-

cians love good music, period. So as long as you’replaying from the heart and keeping it real, every-body has a good, fun time.”

Although much has changed in the 35 yearssince the Ocean Beach Street Fair began, Headsaid he is happy that some things have remainedthe same.

“It’s still all about the kids and raising money forthe OB Fourth of July fireworks show,” he said.

SPOTLIGHT — BAD SCIENCE FICTIONFans of great rock ’n’ roll won’t want to miss the

set from Bad Science Fiction at 2:15 p.m. on theBacon Sun Stage. The band, decked out in labcoats, plays a nifty vein of new-wave inflectedtunes, but what makes the show extra special is the

return of former Ocean Beach resident and majorevent supporter, Chuck Schiele.

Now back in his native New York state, thisshow is a great opportunity to thank Schiele for hismany years of service to San Diego’s music com-munity. The wonderful tunes will almost be abonus.

SPOTLIGHT – THE MENTALSThere are lots of great musicians at the street

fair this year, but the illustrious career of Joey Har-ris stands out. Best known for his work with theBeat Farmers, it’s been a long career that now seeshim performing with The Mentals.

“Fresh air shows like the OB Street Fair are ter-rific fun because the spectators can wander fromstage to stage, sampling the aural taste treats beingserved up,” Harris said.

Fans will be happy to hear he’s taking the sizeand nature of the crowd into consideration.

“When playing an hour show, I like to draw upa set list that plays like a greatest hits record,” hesaid.

SPOTLIGHT – JET WESTLocal reggae rockers Jet West have taken San

Diego by storm since their founding in 2009,earning several San Diego Music Award nomina-tions and building their rep through a string ofkiller shows, including four previous street fairs.

Frontman Chris Warner said the wide age

range of guests are a major plus. “The best part about playing outside events

like this one are the all-age crowds and familiesthat are walking around,” he said. “The kids areour future and it feels great to share our musicand hopefully inspire them to pick up an instru-ment one day.”

35TH ANNUAL OCEAN BEACH STREET FAIR & CHILI COOK-OFF FESTIVALSATURDAY, JUNE 28, 2014 • 10AM - 8PM • OBSTREETFAIR.COM • OCEANBEACHSANDIEGO.COM

It’s true that an event like theOcean Beach Street Fair could nothappen without the dedication andtireless efforts of volunteers.Among the hundreds who help eachyear, lifelong Ocean Beach residentCraig Gerwig stands out.

The owner of a local antiqueshop, the Newport Avenue AntiqueCenter, he is also a member of thestreet fair’s board of directors.

“For years and years he has goneabove and beyond,” said OceanBeach MainStreet Association cre-ative director Liz Greene “He takeson the task of all the pre-eventlogistical organization, like gather-ing the equipment orders, hanging‘no parking warning’ signage twoweeks prior. Plus, he is on site at thecrack of dawn with his ‘DawnPatrol’ group, marking the street forthe setup crew that starts around 5 a.m.

“On top of that, when it’s all saidand done, he hosts a big thank-youparty at his house and gives every-one a chance to decompress, swimand share stories about the day,”she said. “He’s a real asset to theevent.”

Gerwig has been volunteering for15 years.

“I’ve lived in the area my wholelife,” he said. “I just wanted to getinvolved in the community.”

After his Dawn Patrol, Gerwingcontinues to help until midnight.

“Whatever they need, I’m happyto pitch in with,” he said.

He said he is thrilled to be able tohelp his neighborhood.

“I complain sometimes. After all,it is ‘work,’” he said. “But I would-n’t change anything. I love beingable to help out. It really is a lot offun, especially the pre-show stuffwhen we’re getting the streets readyand there is no one out and about.”

It’s clear Gerwig is proud ofOcean Beach.

“It has a good ol’ town flair,” hesaid. “It’s a quirky, little sleepybeach community and a great placeto live. Even better, it’s a very tight-knit place. Everybody gets involved. No other local community is likethat.”
