Principal’s Update

Term 2 has been a very productive one so far with students engaging in a broad range of extracurricular activities across our school. Much of this is showcased in this Whispers with great things happening in sport, the arts, library and leadership activities. We welcome two new teachers to Broken Hill and our school in coming weeks. Mr Ashley Smith has gained the permanent TAS teacher position replacing Mr Michael Mifsud and Mr Tim Gardner will be filling in for Marcia Millsteed who is taking maternity leave for the remainder of the year. Our Term 3 school development day change of date to 12 August has been approved to enable expert staff training in Quality Teaching Rounds. Students are required to attend school on Monday 22 July and do not attend school on Monday 12 August. Students’ half-yearly reports are currently being finalised and will be sent home before the end of term. A parent teacher afternoon will be held on Tuesday 23 July (Term 3 Week 1) from 4:00-6:30pm. Parents and carers are encouraged to come along so we can discuss your child’s progress and work together to best meet their needs. Grant Shepherd Principal

West Darling Girls Soccer On the cold and icy Sunday morning at 3:45am the girls brushed the sleep out of their eyes and boarded the bus after having a little panic attack that they may not be allowed to have their back packs on board. After a little convincing, the bus driver allowed the bags on and the team was away. Seventeen hours later, multiple power naps, more sugar consumed than the recommended daily intake and the team arrived in Sydney. The first day consisted of a little sightseeing to enjoy the benefits of being in a city. The girls tackled Pitt Street Mall, making the most of the winter sales. They trekked down to circular key where they had lunch, took multiple selfies in front of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and found out that seagulls can swoop. Jazmin Callegher’s fear of birds went to a whole new level, when she ran for the hills after being pooped on, leaving Kira Guthrie behind to cop the attack. Lauren Kuerschner even sacrificed her lunch to run from the birds. The team then headed to Kirrawee and set up camp for the next few days. With the thought of a nice sleep in and a cruisy morning of getting ready for their first game that the girls thought was at 12:30pm, was shortly interrupted when Kara Jeffries read the players timetable and realised it was different to the teachers copy. It turned out the first game was at 10am and it was a mad dash of collecting breakfasts and lunches to head to the oval. Two busloads later, the team arrived in time to the field, to become completely drenched by rain and be swept away by the wind. Our first game together was a tough battle, versing Sydney West who turned out to take out the competition. The score of 11-0 does not reflect the dedication and determination that all the girls showed in that match. All played extremely well and gave it their all.

The second game against South Coast was our best game, even with the strength of the wind continually floating the ball back to the girl who kicked it. Kira Guthrie displayed her incredible diving skills, continually putting her body on the line. Tayla Hoysted, Kara Jeffries, Jazmine Ryan and Madison Schenk were ruthless in the backline and finally Jazmin Callegher had a fantastic shot at goals, the teams excitement sored but the ball was unfortunately taken by the wind. Great effort girls. The girls took on Western on day two and were defeated 5-0 as well as Riverina 4-0. Lauren Kuerschner, Braidii Mcleod-Quin and Heaven Celotto were dynamite in the midfield and as striker, never giving up and always trying to be first to the ball. Tanisha Macharia did not let her size stop her against girls 5 years older than her and stood her ground on the wing. Jazmine Ryan impressed everyone and brought smiles in the game break, managing to grab everyone free university t-shirts which seemed to be the choice of shirt after soccer games by most. All girls were full of injuries after putting their bodies on the line and had a quite night at the accommodation, enjoying an impressive display of nachos and tacos cooked on the BBQ by Miss Camilleri. Final game day was against Sydney South West and the girls were defeated 5-0. Emma Sullivan displayed her fitness and ran nonstop in midfield. She gave the girls a run for their money. Kira Guthrie took out West Darling’s Most Valuable Player, diving again and again despite having a pinched nerve in her back and cuts all up her legs. Many coaches from other schools were impressed. The girls left Kirrawee very sore but eager to have one final shop, look at the Vivid light display and have their final double scoop of ice-cream from Gelatissimo before heading home the next day.The girls endured nineteen hours of travel time on two different buses all the way home. Arriving in at 12am they were ready to hang up their boots until next weekends local soccer matches. Miss Camilleri

West Darling Boys Soccer

The West Darling Soccer boys travelled to Wollongong in Week 5 for the 2019 Combined Schools Soccer Championships. With half the side from Year 10 or under the boys performed admirably against some extremely strong opposition over the three days. This was a tremendous learning experience for our 15 against many of the best junior players the state has to offer. All players played hard, never gave up and represented the town, schools, parents, coach & manager as wonderful ambassadors. Special mentions: Alex McCann WD Most Valuable Player, Alex Gray & Blake Rogers runners up. Captain Jack Stacey received accolades for the best regional ambassador of any year for CHS Boys Soccer. Well done Jack. Thanks to the Y’s Men Club, Mark Craven (McDonalds), Maari Ma, Gloria Jeans and Mrs Deacon for great work to gain nearly $2000.00 sponsorship that covered meals etc for the boys. Thanks to staff for supporting the pie drive. David Deacon (Coach) & Shaun Woodhall (Manager).

SRC Conference On Sunday the 19 of May, four Year Ten Willyama students: Ayva O’Meara, Hannah Campbell, Hamish Bolton and Cooper Treloar travelled 15 hours to spend a week at the annual NSW SRC Conference at Warrambui, located near Canberra. Throughout this leadership conference students from many different schools across regional New South Wales participated in orienteering, Minute-To-Win-It activities and trivia as well as making memories and friendships that will possibly last a life time. Workshops, also known as Fexis, were run throughout the week as well, helping the students to improve their school’s environment, community and SRC. These students worked together with other schools from the Far West to create a plan for fixing the communication barriers most of our SRC groups have encountered. To top off the week a disco was held in the main dining hall with the theme of Throwback giving students the chance to get creative and showcase their awesome costuming talents. This week long experience was well worth the long drive and Willyama is sure to benefit from the networking, experiences and learning of Ayva, Hannah, Hamish and Cooper. Riley Mashford (SRC Treasurer)

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea On Thursday 23 May the Willyama SRC held a Biggest Morning Tea to support the Cancer Council’s life-saving research, prevention, support programs, and information. We had a great guest speaker in Miss Roper who spoke about her own experience with cancer and some of the difficulties people have to face when confronted with this diagnosis. We also had a letter from one of our Broken Hill families, the Carpenters, who are currently dealing with cancer treatment sharing their experiences and how Judd’s diagnosis has affected everyone in the family. We had an amazing variety of morning tea items generously provided by our SRC families and the Year 10 Food Technology class and raised just over $400. This money is going to be split between The Cancer Council and Judd Carpenter to assist in the costs of his cancer treatment. Thanks again to everyone who donated their time, money or cooking skills. You are all amazing!

. Book Worms World Book Club This term saw the launch of our new book club! Every fortnight we meet in the library to talk all things book related. The book club members bring along whatever book they are currently reading and each meeting focuses on a particular topic or theme for discussion. This week, our discussions centred on the problems or challenges faced by the characters in each story.

We meet in the library at lunchtime on Thursdays Week A. New members are always welcome – see Ms Henderson in the library if you would like to join the Book Worms World! Ms Henderson

Visual Arts Adelaide Excursion In Week 5, a group of Visual Arts students travelled to Adelaide with Mrs Jones and Miss Hudson. While there, they visited The Jam Factory, where they watched artists blow glassware, and create ceramics, furniture and jewellery. This was an amazing contemporary arts experience that left our students feeling very inspired. The next day was the highlight of the tour, experiencing guided tours of the Quilty exhibition, the Shiota installation and an interesting contemporary arts prize called "The Ramsay" which promoted some interesting discussions! We also visited The Adelaide Central School of Art, where we also had a guided tour of exhibitions and student studio spaces, making both staff and students alike desire to go and study there in the future! Our students were amazing and gained a wealth of knowledge from this valuable experience!

Library News THANK YOU!! Recently, the library has been so lucky to receive some beautiful new books through donations from local organisations.

Book Review The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a 2006 Holocaust story by Irish novelist John Boyne.

This is the story of a forbidden friendship between two eight year old boys during WW11. Bruno the son of the Commander of the German concentration camp, Out-With (Auschwitz), and Shmuel the Jewish boy, an inmate on the other side of the camp fence. Auschwitz 1943, it’s a bleak and forbidding place, surrounded by soldiers and outside of his bedroom window Bruno can see the barbed-wire fence, and beyond, the huddled groups of men and boys. The boy’s innocence and the friendship that develops despite their oppositional worlds is heart-warming and suspends the atrocities of the Holocaust for a time. Ultimately, their friendship results in devastating consequences. This story will keep you wondering from the beginning until the startling and unexpected ending. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is recommended for young adults.

Weekly tip: winning and losing well

In June, our weekly tips aim to inspire and equip dads with kids in sport. This week; how can you help your kids learn how to win and lose well?

• Encourage your child to congratulate their opponent when they lose, and not boast when they win.

• Talk about the game afterwards and help your child to see where they did well and areas where they could critique themselves constructively - were they a good sport, do they think they gave their best effort, how could they work better with the team?

• Encourage your child to do their best at all times, and share some tips on how you stay motivated with your sport and other challenges.

• Openly recognise good sportsmanship in your child and others. • Don't be the 'ugly parent' at your child's events – cheer good play by both sides and treat players,

coaches and referees with respect.
