The lot where their house is located is not their own. His father is a tenant of a small area of farm and gets 10% share from the land owner every harvest season (every three-four months). His mother has a small store in their house and sometimes she sells vegetables or fruits in the market. The six other children live with their parents. Financial problem which the family grapples everyday and the distance from home to school in Pikit, North Cotabato where their family lives are the main reasons why they prefer to stay in Dugong to continue with their education.

He was not able to finish his studies last year because he stopped schooling. To work as a helper in a store to help his family. He and his other siblings are raised by their mother who is a widow. His mother works during planting and harvest season. The income that she earns is not sufficient for the family. This is one reason why Roland has to excuse himself from time to time in his class to work and help his mother earn extra amount for their allowance and to be able to go to school. Being a seasonal worker, his father can only expect his meager income after the harvest season (after 3-4 months). During lean months where there are no works, they do other menial jobs in other places of the town. Due to poverty her brothers and sisters have to stop going to school. Although a transferee, Rizzy excels in her academic performance. She is so inspired now to go to school after being chosen as one of the WIMLER scholars which provided her with the things she needs in school which her parents could not afford to buy.
