INTRODUCTIONFor some time now there has existed a requirement fora l ightweight infantry weapon capable of select ivesemi-automatic or fully automatic f i re . In the summerof 1957 Conarc expressed an active interest in aweapon of this type in cal iber .22 centerfire capableof f i r ing a 50 to 55 grain bul le t a t a muzzle veloci tyof approximately 3300 f t / sec . The weight of the r i f l ewas not to exceed five pounds.Consequently a development program was ini t ia ted byWinchester-Western Division of Olin Mathieson ChemicalCorporation to produce a r i f l e and cartr idge combinat ion capable of ful f i l l ing this requirement. Thef i r s t Winchester Lightweight Mili tary Rifle wascompleted in October 1957 and successfully demonstrated a t Fort Monroe on October 25, 1957, and a t FortBenning on November 6, 1957.This f i r s t prototype was followed by an experimentalquanti ty of l ight r i f le s incorporating certain improvements in design which have been delivered to Ordnanceand Conarc for evaluat ion purposes.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHYFrom the very beginning of the development work onthe Winchester Light Rifle i t was considered ofutmost importance tha t re l iab i l i ty must not besacrif iced to obtain low weight. As a consequencea policy decision was taken tha t the new LightweightRifle was to be designed on the basis of well provenear l ie r guns whose f ie ld re l iab i l i ty had been established in extensive te s ts . As a resul t the bestelements were taken from the Winchester .30 CaliberExperimental Light Rifle , the G30R Semi-automaticRifle , the WAR Automatic Rifle and the .50 CaliberSemi-automatic Anti Tank Rifle , to serve as a basisfor development of the Winchester Lightweight Rifle .By basing t he development of the new r i f l e on provenelements, the extensive test ing experience gainedwith the ear l ie r r i f l e s , was ut i l ized for the newLightweight Rifle , yielding a weapon design of goodinherent re l iab i l i ty and shor t development time toproduction s tatus .During the extensive development of the weapon agreat number of s ignif icant changes were incorporated, resul t ing in improved function and fac i l i t a tedproduction. A key feature of the r i f l e is tha t a l lsub-assemblies are functionally self-contained.Since none of the sub-assemblies rely on adjacentcomponents for primary function, dif f icu l t ies dueto tolerance accumulations are eliminated. To assure re l iab i l i ty under f ie ld conditions i twas decided from the s ta r t tha t only s tee l was tobe used for primary act ion parts . Consequently, barre l , receiver and a l l parts subject to dynamicloading are manufactured from s tee l to obtain highst rength and wear resis tance . Aluminum 7075-T6 isused only in components where no dynamic forces or

impact occur . A typical example of such a par ti s the t r igger guard which has to withstand onlys ta t ic forces . The stock of the Lightweight Rifleis American walnut .Low weight i s thus achieved by sound design usingconventional materials without compromise of gunl i f e .

    DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN FEATURES

    (1) MagazineAluminum magazine of 20 round capacity.

    (2) Ga s System IShort stroke piston requires no cleaning ordisassembly during l i fe of gun.

    (3) BarrelExternally fluted for weight reduction and increased cooling surface without sacr i f ice tor ig id i ty . Separated by an annular a i r spacefrom the stock to improve cooling and avoidstock burning.

    (4) Fire ControlFul l automatic f i r ing is controlled by a timingbar, which i s carr ied forward by the s l ide unt i lthe bol t is l ocked, and then released by a camlug on the barre l . Flying rearward it s t r ikesa rocker arm which t r ips the hammer catch thusf i r ing the r i f l e . The type of f i re i s controlledby a change lever on the l e f t side front end ofthe receiver. When this lever is turned forward, action is fu l l automatic; when turned to the rearfor semi-automatic f i re the timing bar is sprungout preventing contact with the s l ide .

    (5) SightsThe r i f l e is equipped with a blade type f ronts ight and a two-position f l ip over s ight , mounted

on the rear of the receiver . The low set t ing ofthe rear s ight is adjusted for 250 yards and thehigh set t ing for 440 yards. With the low s ight set t ing a maximum mismatch'between l ine of s ight and point of bul le t impactof 4 inches is obtained from the muzzle to 300yards with the mismatch increasing to 1? inchesa t 360 yards . With the high set t ing a maximummismatch of 12 inches is obtained from 360 yardsto 500 yards. This two-position f l ip-over rear s ight i s extremely simple and is capable of quick adjustment.A t rajectory curve and the l ine of sights superimposed is shown on page 44.

    (6) SafetyThe safety sleeve re t rac ts the hammer from thesear and also closes the opening in the receiverto prevent entry of sand or other foreign matter .Removal of the safety requires a combined rearward and la te ra l motion which prevents the safetyfrom being easi ly knocked out of the safe posi t ion.

    (7) Firing PinRetracted mechanically during the f i r s t par t ofthe unlocking of the bol t and held in retractedposi t ion during the ent i re longitudinal movementof the gun mechanism. I t is released only af te rbo lt is closed and locked . This prevents thef i r ing pin from contacting the primer duringfeeding or eject ing, and therefore the r i f l e canonly be f i red when the bol t is ful ly locked.

    (8) ExtractorA mechanical feature of the extractor is tha t i tis mechanically closed into the extractor cut in

the she l l by the cam cut in the receiver whenthe bolt rota tes and is locked in this posi t ionwhen the she l l is f ired.(9) Bolt

The bolt incorporates the following designfeatures: The lugs are exceptionally ~ a r g ere la t ive to the size of the bol t . Lockingsurface rota tes into a helix locking cam. Thecam's surface that operate on the closing andopening cams on the operating sl ide equal along hel ix . This long sloping cam allows theoperating sl ide to exer t greater force on locking and unlocking of the bol t . The surfacethat the s l ide contacts when carrying the bol tforward also has a hel ix cam. I t is impossibleto f ire the gun when the bol t is open.

    (10) StockOne-piec e American Walnut with pis to l grip. Inassembling the action into the stock there isan interference horizontal ly between the takedown pin and the guard shoulders, which have anarr ow projection to prevent the stock fromspreading due to climatic variat ions. Thedimension from the upper to the lower takedownplates is greater than the spread between thebottom of the receiver and the tang on theguard. These features maintain the action underconstant spring tension both horizontal ly andver t ica l ly , when assembled. The bar re l issupported by the front band. When the gun isassembled there is a space between the barreland the wood, the act ion being supported by theupper takedown plate and the front band. This

design feature prevents the stock from burningunder intensive f i r ing . The holes in the sideof the hand guard are to allow the escape oftrapped heat ., (11) Bolt Hold Open Device

The principle features of the bol t hold, opendevice are tha t the bol t stop automaticallylocks the bolt open when the l a s t shot is f iredfrom the magazine. The bol t wil l remain openaf te r the empty Tllagazine is removed and a loadedone inserted. Following inser t ion of the loadedmagazine the bol t stop is released by pullingthe sl ide handle rearward.

    (12) Field StrippingThis gun can be f ie ld str ipped in a few second. without tools . Details of f ie ld str ipping aregiven on Page 18.

    (13) Takedown and AssemblyThe complete takedown and assembly is simple andcan be accomplished with a few standard tools .An armorer's k i t is available to fac i l i t a tetakedown. (See page 24).

    (14) Un i t DesignGuard, bolt ,and receiver units are self-containedand do not rely on adjacent parts for the i r primaryoperation. This permits interchangeabili ty ofuni ts and fac i l i ta tes function checks.
