Principal’s Pen

I am sure by now that most of you know that I have decided to retire at the end of the school year. It was a difficult decision as I truly love being the principal of CHRHS. At the same time, I know it is time to let go, move along, and finally decide what I want to do when I grow up. The last 10 years have been terrific. The students in particular have been wonderful. I could not have asked for better kids to work with. This year when I met with each class I asked them for one going away present…”to make my last year, my best year.” I am confident they will deliver that gift. I am also extremely grateful to the parents and community for all they do to support our school. Any principal will tell you that parental and community involvement and support is crucial, and you folks delivered. You all get an “A.” Last but not least, I have had the pleasure of working with a great staff. There is a professional spirit and commitment to kids at CHRHS that transcends job descriptions. Our kids flour-ish because adults here really care about them. Throughout the year, I will be checking off boxes, to remind me how fleeting this year will be. The CHRHS Library is back!

We are now open all day, every day of the week, plus before and after school from 7:15-3:30. We have made some recent policy changes: books go out for two weeks (renewing is an option if more time is needed), and we have no late fines! We expect library users to be responsible and just bring books back when they are due, simple as that.

We are pleased to report that so far the model is working. We served almost 900 students in the first two weeks of school and have circulated 297 books (a tenfold increase from last year during the same period). We have had classes coming in for orientation, students coming in to study quietly and in groups, and students and teach-ers have been enjoying our selection of new books. Our book collection is somewhat aged (average copyright year is 1990), but we are doing what we can to make our budget stretch and bring the collection up to date. This includes a new account with a national book distributor that gives 40% off of retail prices, and we’re purchasing more paperback books. The feedback from students has been fantastic---so many books flying off our shelves.

The library is a place where students and teachers are coming for tech help, because Mrs. Eichenlaub also wears the Tech Integrator hat. We’ve had lots of iPad questions and email password questions lately. We also have new desktop computers available for students to use while they are at school. During the first few days of school a student was overheard saying: “The library is AWESOME!” We think so too. Come in and see what’s happen-ing.

Mrs. Eichenlaub (Librarian/Tech Integrator) Mr. Withey (Library Ed Tech)

Attention Seniors!! Your class dues of $60 are now due. Please see Ms. Cote with your payment and/or questions as soon as possible. Thank you!

CHRHS Visual and Performing Arts Student of the MonthThe CHRHS Visual and Performing Arts Department has selected senior Jack Prime as Student of the Month for September.

Jack has been immersed in the arts during his entire high school career. As a freshman and sophomore, he took a wide range of art classes including Drawing, Advanced Drawing and Painting, Jewelry, Metal Sculpture, and Photography. His painting and drawing work has been featured in the annual Student Show at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Because of his outstanding commitment to the visual arts, he was selected as the CHRHS participant for Haystack Studio Learning program as a sophomore.

During Jack’s junior year, he took additional art classes, including Advanced Art Portfolio where he created a memorable interactive digital portfolio of his process and research for a large metal sculpture project. This proj-ect involved some engineering and specialized assistance from Mr. Nystrom and members of the community. He spent many hours of focused attention on this project and showcased it at CHRHS Fine Arts Night.

Last year, he also contributed his talents to the set design, construction, and painting for the winter play, Ru-mors of Polar Bears. He was awarded a Judges’ Commendation for this work at the 2015 Maine Drama Festival State Finals.

During this past summer, Jack worked as an intern for Tom Weis, co-founder of the Steel House Center for De-sign, Technology and Education in Rockland.

Currently, he is busy as the lead designer for the fall musical The Addams Family and he hopes to continue his work with set design for the winter play, Charlotte’s Web.

Jack is currently enrolled in advanced visual arts classes, and is planning to study industrial design in college.

YEARBOOK NEWS FOR THE CLASS OF 2016Each Fall, the Yearbook Staff collects information from the new seniors for their pages in the yearbook. This information consists of four items:1. Their Name as they would like it to appear in the yearbook.2. A Senior Picture (the picture a senior would like to appear in the senior section of the yearbook).3. A Baby Picture (this is optional, but we also include these).4. Their Senior “Memories” – optional but they might like to say something appropriate about their experience here.

On September 16, I emailed each senior a link to a “youtube” video that I created to explain exactly what each senior should do to upload the information above. It is a short video and parents are welcome to watch it. The link for the video is: https://youtu.be/jkyo5LziKwc

It is VERY IMPORTANT to adhere to this deadline: ALL SENIOR MATERIALS ARE DUE ON OR BEFORE FRIDAY OCTOBER 23, 2015.

If you don’t want to watch the video, you can probably figure things out by going to our webpage. On the CHRHS Website http://www.fivetowns.net/chrhs/ you will find a tab for “Student Activities”, open the shade and there is another tab for “Yearbook”. Click that tab and you’ll be taken to the Navigator Yearbook web page: http://navigatoryearbook.wikispaces.com , or, you can copy this address into your browser and get there instantly.

PARENT ADS IN THE YEARBOOK

Parents who wish to take an ad out in the yearbook should visit the “wikispace” link above and there is information there about parent ads. The income from parent ads helps supplement our revenue stream and keeps the cost of the yearbook as low as possible. Business ads also help with this and there is information about business ads on our web page also. The cost of producing the yearbook is always higher than the revenue we bring in from ads and sales, thus, we always run a very tight budget. If you have any questions, please contact me (Mr. Fitzgerald).

FALL YEARBOOK SALE

We will continue our tradition of selling reservations for 2016 Yearbooks at the school’s Homecoming event on October 9 & 10. As in the past, the book will be priced at its lowest and we’ll offer FREE personalization. This is the best time to order a book. This year, the full cost of the yearbook will be $70.00, but at homecoming, we will offer the book for $65.00 and the free personalization is a $5.00 deal, so this deal is a good discount.

Industrial Technolohy

The students in Mr. Felicetti’s Introduction to Industrial Technology class are taking a hand in wildlife conservation by learning to build bat houses. Bats are an essential member of our com-munity and help us in lots of ways, from eating mosquitos, to protecting crops from pests, to pollinating flowers and helping to replant forests. Bats, especially in the Northeast, are facing serious threats from habitat disturbance and diseases, such as White-nose Syndrome, so now is an especially important time to help them out.

As an introduction to the use of tools and processes in the wood shop, teams of students are learning to read and follow plans, mill and cut boards, and assemble the bat houses. The com-pleted bat houses will then be donated to the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge to assist them in their bat conservation efforts.

As an extension of the lessons learned in making a single bat house, the class will then learn how to transition this project into a rapid production process with the goal of producing 50 bat house kits for use on the Bat House Challenge. This challenge is being hosted at the Maine Coastal Islands NWR as part of a national event to produce a record number of bat houses in a single day. Using materials donated by the Refuge, students will use their skills to rapidly pro-duce a large quantity of identical pieces to be assembled into kits that will be used in the Chal-lenge on Saturday, October 31. In addition to producing the kits, several students from the class will take a field trip to the Refuge office to act as mentors and helpers for children learning to assemble the kits that we have created.

The Challenge is scheduled for Saturday, October 31 at the Maine Coastal Islands NWR office in Rockland. There will be a morning session for children and an afternoon session for adults. Registration is required. If you are interested in more information on this even please con-tact the Refuge office at (207) 594-0600. Links and information will also be available on the CHRHS Shop facebook page.

Family & Consumer Science

In Creative Sewing class students are learning how to use the sewing machine along with refin-ing their hand sewing skills. We will soon be learning how to lay out a pattern, cut, mark and sew a simple pillow case dress and shorts for The Little Dresses for Africa service project. We need pillow cases or a yard of cotton, or cotton blend fabric for these projects. Donations of fabric, thread and trims are much appreciated. Contact Mary Wells if you would like to make a fabric donation.
