There’s More than One Election This Year

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

3 PCA P IPEL INE NEWS, SEPTEMBER 2020

Save the date, October 21 for the PCA Annual Meeting and Election. Take part in this annual discussion about your Club and have an opportunity to choose the 2020/2021 PCA Board of Directors. Any Regular, Associate, Young Professional, or Military Member in good standing may run for a seat on the PCA Board. Members may also nominate a fellow member who they think might be a great fit for one of the officers, directors, or committee chair positions. To nominate a fellow member, at least 15 other member signatures must be gathered in support of the candidate.

Whether you’re running for a position or not, please take the time to fill out your ballot and return it in the mail or drop it into the ballot box (which will be placed in the Club’s entryway) by October 21. Be sure we have your correct mailing address to receive a ballot in the mail. Ballots will be mailed the last week of September. If you do not receive a ballot, please let us know.

All Members are encouraged to participate in a discussion about the Club’s current and future status and to elect the new Board of Directors. As PCA President Tom Redmond mentions in his article (page 4 of this newsletter) this year’s meeting will “most likely be a combination of in-house and online venues to accommodate appropriate social distancing.” Details to come as we get closer to October. Members only, no spouses please.

2020/2021 Nominations Committee includes the following PCA Members: • Jack Laasch• Lynn Johnson• Jackie Hansen• Dan Newman• James Carson• Tom Hendrix • Tanguy Libbrecht

Dear Members,

Our summer is winding down and one can feel the slight chill to the air in the mornings and evenings. Many of us have been taking advantage of our awesome Patio this past month and the two live music events we had in August were just great. Matt Hopper put on a low key and casual acoustic show on August 5th and the Vintage Retro group rocked the outdoor space on August 21st. The fresh oysters, bubbly, and other food items were fantastic thanks to Chef John, the PCA staff, and our generous sponsors Jack Laasch and the other dude.

The 45th Annual PCA Golf Tournament on August 14th at the Anchorage Golf Course was a tremendous success in light of all the current circumstances. The weather cooperated beautifully, and a good time was had by all. Fred Miller, golf chair and the PCA golf committee members Caren Maffucci, Jodi Walton, Cindy Marshall, Jackie

Hansen, Jim Palmer, John Cameron, Ross Dean, Sheri Underwood, Matt Thon, Stephanie Hadyn, and Eric Imig did an excellent job in putting on this year’s event. Congratulations once again to Kevin Tabler as this year’s Tournament Champion.

Covid-19 still plagues us and the regulatory mandates are constantly evolving with regard to what rules apply to bars and restaurants. Looks like the Mayor is allowing us back indoors as of August 31st but with new health protection restrictions that must be followed. Updates will be supplied to members via email and Facebook. We also continue to offer an excellent meal selection for take-out and curbside service.

Upcoming events include the Little Red Dress event on September 23rd at 6pm. Paula Bradison, owner of Alaska Executive Search and Bradison Management Group, LLC will be speaking to the ladies that

evening. The Ronnie Allen Shoot is on October 17th and the annual meeting and board election will be on October 21st. The annual meeting this year will most likely be a combination of in-house and online venues to accommodate appropriate social distancing.

The online auction of wines on the PCA’s Captains List will take place September 11 through 13th. Please turn to page 11 in this newsletter to learn more.

Please also continue to support the OneAlaska Vote No on 1 campaign. This ballot measure is a huge threat to the Oil Industry in Alaska and jeopardizes our economy, local businesses, and jobs for Alaskans. It puts our entire future at risk. For more information go to www.OneAlaska.com.

All the best,

- Tom Redmond, President

On behalf of the PCA Board of Directors, I would like to extend our grateful appreciation to this year’s golf tournament sponsors. This has been an extraordinary year with the COVID 19 pandemic, the crash in oil prices, the collapse of our tourism industry as well as COVID 19 restrictions impacting the restaurant & bar industry. Many prior year sponsors could not sponsor the tournament this year as they experienced slashes to their discretionary spending. I can say with complete certainty that without the support from this year’s sponsors, we would not have had a golf tournament. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

I would also like to extend my sincerest appreciation to the players this year for the patience you demonstrated throughout the tournament date changes as well as the format changes at the 11th hour. What was to be a two-day, July 9 & 10 Tournament at Moose Run eventually became a one-day tournament at the Anchorage Golf Course on August 14. We changed the date last June anticipating the huge restrictions with the COVID 19 hunker down in early July and thought that August would provide a better opportunity. Unfortunately, we went back into COVID Phase 2 Restrictions on August 3 which required us to go from a shot-gun start that we were planning in July, to a modified shot-gun/tee time start the week of August 3 which then changed to a tee time start on the Tuesday before the tournament. Your patience, flexibility and understanding throughout all these changes were greatly appreciated.

As you might imagine, it is very difficult to plan a golf tournament in the best of circumstances. This year’s circumstances were not quite the worst. I will reserve worst for situations such as a zombie apocalypse or Godzilla showing up in Cook Inlet. However, it was one for the books as we didn’t know if the new tournament dates would hold, whether we would get enough sponsors and players, what impact would the COVID 19 restrictions have on the tournament, etc. I want to give

The 45th Annual PCA Golf Tournament

THANK YOUa HUGE SHOUT OUT to this year’s Golf Committee, our Tournament Volunteers, and to the staff at the Anchorage Golf Course. With all the challenges that I described above; this team put forth a Herculean Effort to pull this tournament off. It was my privilege to work with the team as they made it look easy!

Finally, it didn’t go unnoticed what a spectacular day we had for the Golf Tournament. It was truly a beautiful day and I would like to thank God for giving us such a day. I believe we all deserved it especially with the year that we have endured together.

Thank you everyone for a great golf tournament and best wishes for the remainder of the year!

Fred Miller2020 PCA Golf Tournament Chair

P.S. – We are tentatively planning our 2020 Golf Tournament Awards Banquet for mid-October, pending COVID 19 restrictions being lifted. Please keep your eye out on PCA announcements in September for further details.
