2009 Hudson Vineyard ChardonnayThe Hudson vineyard is located in the rolling hills of the Carneros, adjacent to the San Pablo Bay. The proximity to the fog and breezes from the bay makes the climate in Los Carneros cooler than surrounding areas, the perfect environment in which to grow chardonnay.

The vineyard has rocky well-drained soils that are planted to the shy-bearing heritage shot Wente clone. The grapes were hand harvested and whole-cluster pressed into French oak barrels, approximately 40% of which were new. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in the barrel, and the resultant wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered in order to handle it as minimally as possible.

The wine is broad shouldered, with a great rich smooth texture and wonderful natural acidity on the finish. The flavors are of caramelized apples, Bosc pears, hazelnuts and vanilla. 300 cases made.

2009 Hirsch Vineyard Pinot NoirThe Hirsch Vineyard is located on a rugged ridge close to the Pacific Ocean at an elevation of 1500 feet, in a zone above the marine fogline. The high elevation vineyard sees approximately 14 hours of sun versus 10 hours at below the fogline, thus allowing long hours of unmitigated sunlight late in the season when tannins are evolving.

The grapes were hand-harvested, destemmed into open-top fermenters, with daily manual punch-downs. This is the best method to gently extract flavor and supple tannins from the grapes. The wine was aged for 11 months in French oak barrels approximately 40% of which were new.

It has a rich full texture, a lovely underlying minerality and excellent natural acidity. The flavors are of tart black cherries, black raspberries and freshly grated nutmeg. 350 cases made.

NEW RELEASESWe are excited to announce the first release of our new series of 32 Winds single vineyard wines. We have chosen to work with two of the most coveted vineyards in California in order to craft these wines. Both the Hudson Vineyard in Carneros and the Hirsch Vineyard on the wild Sonoma Coast are iconic vineyards that consistently produce world class grapes, and consequently, world class wines.

2009 VINTAGE2009 produced excellent wines, to rival those of 2007; they express the individuality of the sites on which they were grown with intense flavors and aromas. The late winter and spring of 2009 were unseasonably warm with little precipitation. Bud break occurred in early March and unlike 2008, there was no problem with frost. The summer months were characterized by cooler than average weather, aided by morning fog, allowing the vines to slowly ripen their crop without typical heat stress. This resulted in intense flavor and aroma development, great acidity and phenolic development in tune with sugar accumulation. Just as harvest was approaching, short heat spikes in late August brought the berries to perfect ripeness while maintaining superb acidity.
