WINGRIDER Chapter D New Jersey

During last year, we had a promotion called “Up, Up, and Away”. What were we offering? A trip for two in a hot air balloon with lunch. During the months of January through December, our chapter members received a ticket in the drawing for meetings they came to, rides they went on, other Chapter visits, special Chapter events, and District events. At our January meeting, all the tickets were mixed up and one lucky ticket was drawn. We are pleased to announce that Herb Sherman will be going “Up, Up, and Away! Congratulations Herb. A few of us attended Winterthing in Ocean City, Maryland last month. This was a first for Tim and I. So we didn’t know what to expect. Wow, do they know how to party! Friday night entertainment was side splitting. On Saturday, there were many seminars and other events to keep you busy. The dinner on Saturday night was great. We enjoyed ourselves so much, that we’re going back next year. Will you come too? We’d like to thank James Wishbow for stepping up to Chapter Ride Coordinator. He’s come up with some great places for us to visit. In order to assist him, and meet the needs of you, our members, please complete and return to Ride Survey that was emailed to you. Deleted it? No problem, One is attached for your convenience. He’s also been looking at places to hold “Tire Kicks”. Thanks, James for doing a great job! Other news in the Chapter….congratulations to several members. Doug Wadiak is a member of the Blue Knights that Tim and James ride with. He recently purchased Dave Fairlie’s blue wing. Doug lives in Middletown, and has joined GWRRA. Why was Dave selling the bike? He had bought an ’06! Kevin and Trish recently let us know that their family would be growing again. With the baby due in May, Kevin felt he wouldn’t get much riding time in, so he put the bike and trailer up for sale. Afte rall, he knows he can come over and take one of ours for a spin--the decision he’d have to make would be does he ride the white Wing, and break color tradition, or ride the red Aero. At any rate, within a few days, both the bike and trailer were sold to a couple in Forked River. Kevin also gave them all the “goodies” he had gotten over the years as well as transferring his GWRRA membership to them. On a more serious note, Chris Edwards recently underwent surgery. She is home and recuperating well. Our best wishes to all of you. At the District Staff meeting in January, it was announced that instead of the Region having a “Bag Of Cash” raffle as they have done in prior years, they would be joining forces with Pennsylvania, and tickets would be sold to take a chance on a new 2007 Gold Wing. I hear you going o-o-o-o-o-o-o, a-h-h-h-h-h-h. The drawing will be held at the PA rally in August, and you do not need to be present to win. I picked up some tickets for the drawing, so if you’re feeling lucky, or know someone who could use a brandy new Wing, he’s the chance. Let me know how many you’d like to take and sell. Somebody’s gonna win it, so why not one of us! If you haven’t heard, February will be our last monthly gathering at Harold’s. We have been out looking for a new place to sponsor us. Please keep in mind that our “territory” is quite large, and extends from Trenton to Edison. We are looking to go somewhere in the middle. Do you know of a place? Don’t keep it a secret. Let us know about it. Would you prefer to order off a menu or from a buffet? We need your input as soon as possible, as we have to make a decision by the beginning of March, so there’s not a lot of time.

Carl Venable is looking for people who are interested in signing up for the Rider Education Program. He has the forms, so don’t be shy! There is no cost you to for the Levels 1, 2 or 3 to complete the paper work. When was the last time you took an ERC course? He has information on courses as well. Keep in mind that if you are a member of the Honda Rider’s Club, they will reimburse you up to $75 each year for approved MSF courses! Some insurance companies also offer additional discounts when you submit a copy of your completion card. Hey, you know what that means--MORE CHROME MONEY! We also are looking to hold a combined CPR and First Aid course, by the Red Cross. But, in order to hold it, we need at least six people. The cost…..nothing if you’re an active member of our Chapter! Now, you can’t beat free, so what are you waiting for? Don’t need CPR or First Aid? There are many other courses that can be arranged for us. Mike and Nancy Mandell from Chapter F are certified instructors for GWRRA. So if you’d like to have a Co-Rider, Road Captain, or any other course, let Carl know, and he’ll make it happen. Are you new to GWRRA and not quite sure what we’re talking about? Ask Carl, he’ll be ready to share it with you. He is also looking in to the “Tire Kicks” in the northern part of our “area” for next year. Share your ideas with him. The District’s April Fool’s Dinner is quickly approaching. It’s being held on Saturday, April 1st, at the VFW in Manville. You get to wear your silliest attire (if you so choose), enjoy some great music and dancing, and eat, eat, eat. Oh, and did I mention baskets? Why, silly me. Each Chapter in the NJ District, as well at the District, Rider Education, and CMA, put together a “themed” basket. You receive a number of tickets, and you can purchase additional ones there. Tickets are placed in containers, and one lucky winner brings home the basket. In prior years, some of the themes were electrical, beach, dining, motorcycle care, entertainment (tv, vcr, etc.), lottery, bbq, and many others. So come on out, for a great time with friends! Sign up and reserve your spot for this once a year event!!!! Two other events that need you to register for is Wing Ding (July) and the NJ District Rally (Sept). Rooms for Wing Ding and some of the special events are going quick! If you’re planning on going, don’t delay. The NJ rally the host hotel is still accepting reservations. The District was able to secure the hotel and the conference rooms where seminars can be held, by guaranteeing to fill the rooms. Not sure if you’re going to be able to go? No problem. Book your room now, and send in your rally registration once you know for sure. You can cancel the room later if you can’t make it. Continued growth is dependant on every Chapter. This year, we have lost four couples for various reasons (death, moving, illness, and personal family reasons). When you are a large Chapter, this type of loss isn’t noticed. However, when you are smaller, it becomes painfully obvious. The challenge to you is for every member of our chapter to bring one new friend with you during the year. There are many people who don’t know what GWRRA is, and what we have to offer (towing by Rescue Plus, a magazine geared to our specific needs, free safety courses, message boards, and the Gold Book). Carl has printed up some “Wanted” flyers that we will be handing out as well. Take some, and give them out. If you’re out and you see a Wing or Valkrie, stop and say hello. Introduce yourself. It all starts with a handshake. Soon the riding season will be here. Time to break out the chrome polish and wash our mighty steeds. We wish everyone safe travels, happy memories, and look forward to seeing you at our next gathering.

Desi & Tim Smith, Chapter Directors
