Dear Father, thank you so much to your  very nice answer. Father, iba namangtanong: Ano ba itong FLORES DE MAYO- is this an official doctrine of the RomanCatholic Church? And is this found on the

bible? Thank you and God bless us all...(February 9, 2010 8:46 PM )

Welcome Brother. About the Flores deMayo: It is not an official doctrine but apious practice which is of course Biblical.Flores de Mayo is Spanish. The English isFlowers of May. But it is basically theCatholic devotion of offering the

beautiful flowers of the Spring time [April-May] to remind us of the love story

between Christ and His Church and of theHoly Women whose lives were like afragrant flowers offered to God. TheBiblical imagery of flowers in Spring timeis very beautiful and is the source of many deep Christian Spirituality and Mysticism

as these passages from SONG OF SONGS:

Song 1:14 “My beloved is unto me asa c luster of henna–flowers in the

 vineyards of En–gedi.”

Song 2:12 “The flowers appear onthe earth; the time of the singing of

birds is com e, and the voice of theturtle is heard in our land;”

The Book of Songs or Canticle of Canticles

of Solomon speaks of a love story betweenGod and the human soul. Here God ispresented as a Male Lover, a handsomeKing and a Bridegroom while the humansoul is presented as a Virgin, Pure andBeautiful Maiden.

Even though for Catholic theology thatmaiden refers to the Church and to every soul thirsting for God we cannot deny thatthe first lover of Christ among theChristian believers is the Blessed VirginMary. She is the Virgin model of Christian purity of heart whose body andsoul have been offered to God. That is why

as the Song of Songs speaks of a BelovedGirl the Gospel of Luke speaks of Mary as“lubos na pinakamamahal ng Dios”[Lucas 1:28 Ang Biblia]. The literalEnglish translation of which is “The MostBeloved of God”. In other Bibletranslations it is rendered “full of grace”[Douay-Rheims Version] or “highly favored” [King James Version].

Mary loved Jesus more than her life  because allowing herself to becomepregnant not caused by her husband is

punishable by death. She loved Jesusmore than Joseph because she was ready to be rejected by Joseph for the sake of the Messiah. She loved the Lord morethan family because she was ready to beforsaken or abandon by her family if evershe will be found pregnant prior to the

wedding. Thus, Mary has the right to theclaim of being the First Virgin beloved of God and loved Him in return. Thus, she

has the right to exclaim:

Songs 2:1 “I am a Rose of Sharon, alily of the valleys.”

Indeed, Mary lived in Nazareth a placefamous for flowers such as lilies and roses

being near the lake and also near the valleys. Thus the prophecy:

Isaiah 35:1 “The wilderness an d thesolitary place shall be glad; and thedesert shall rejoice, and blossom asthe ROSE.”

has been fulfilled in Israel at the comingof the Messiah, in the Church because of the graces given by the Messiah and of course in Mary because she is the Rose[the Virgin] in whom the Messiah burstforth like a shoot. Thus she is also filled

 with the ‘Fullness of Grace’.

Thus, the spring flowers remind us of Mary and she in turn reminds us of ourlove of God. Thus, every May we gatherflowers, then go to the Church or Chapel, and offer these flowers before the Altarof God and the venerated image of theBlessed Virgin Mary. Many parishes are

even organizing beautiful cantatas, fluvialprocessions and Santa Cruzan [in thePhilippines] to highlight this pious and

beautiful devotion. But the most popularpractice celebrating this is the recitationof the Holy Rosaries either at homes orat churches.

The practice gain widespread popularity due to St. Philip Neri who propagated thisdevotion and many Popes did the same.

“My solemn word is this: I am thesheep gate. All who came before me

  were thieves and marauders whom

the sheep did not heed. “I am the gate.  Whoever enters through me will besafe. He will go in and out and findpasture.”(Jn 6:))

A typical Filipino faithful couldcomprehend what Jesus is sayingabove if he has experienced theSemites’ way of life or he has someknowledge of the culture of the peopleof the Near and Middle East. Jesus,

being a Jew knows full well the life of the people of his time. In order to bringhome God’s word to them, Jesus uses

their day to day experiences. In today’sgospel he uses a very familiar imageries– first, the figure of a sheep hold orsheep pen and then of the sheep gatein order to draw his hearers’ attentionto his message.

Jesus then identifies to his listeners thetwo kinds of shepherds. The first kindare the shepherd owners. These are thereal shepherds. They are known as thenoble or honorable shepherds. However, this first type of shepherdsare hard to find, even during the

biblical times. The second ones are thehired hands. This are the thieves,

bandit, strangers and immoral ones who take advantage of their sheep.

In his book “The Cultural World of Jesus”, John Filch writes the followingcharacteristics of the noble orhonorable shepherd. First, he entersthe door instead of sneaking in someother way. Second, the gatekeeperknows him as the genuine shepherd of the flock and allows him to enter thesheep fold. Finally, he leads the sheep

in and out. Semites know thatshepherds do not lead the sheep. They

walk behind them and urge themforward hence being able to keep an eyefor wayward stragglers. In some places, however, shepherds walk before theirsheep and call them with a familiar cry.It is this cry rather than simply voicerecognition that guides the sheep.Sheep are not keen at recognizingplaces. As such, they can get losteasily. When lost, they start to panic.Falling to the ground, they bleat so loud

that it will attract the shepherd; thus, saving their lives.

As Jesus identifies himself as the sheepgate, he is referring to himself as the

way towards eternal life in contrast

with the hired shepherds who leadtheir sheep towards their death. In thissense, Jesus speaks about the bondingthat exists between him and those who

believes in him. When the nobleshepherd enters the sheep hold “hecalls his own by name and, leads themout…” and the sheep follow him

because “they recognize his voice”.  What is present here is the intimaterelationship between the shepherd andthe sheep. The shepherd knows eachone of his sheep and in return they know him well too. This kind of

relationship did not pop up overnight but was built over a period of time. Asthe sheep experienced the way he leadsthem to green pastures for their fill andrest their trust in him also deepens. Asa consequence, all that he has just tocall each one by name and they follow him.

As Christians, our relationship withJesus is or should be very much likethat between the noble shepherd andthe sheep. The more we reflect on ourexperiences, the more clear it is for usthat it is God himself who leads us in

every way, guiding us and helping usin what we have to do. Maybe we caneven say that this is what Jesus isreferring to when he says: “I came thatthey might have life and have it to thefull”(Jn). By experiencing God’s love,

we come to love him in a deeper way. With this, we become more trusting as we realize with happiness his guidancein all things that happen to us in eachpassing day.

Thus, together with King David we singout with joy the words of the 23 rd

Psalm:

“T h e L o r d is m y s h e p h e r d a n d   I s h a l l n o t w a n t , H e m a k e s m e t o li e d o w n i ng r e en p a s t u r e ,

“(T)he debate has focused only on whether theBill should be passed or rejected in its presentform. Either option would not be good for Filipinos.” by Ducky Paredes

Some Jesuits (Fr. Eric O. Genilo, S.J., Fr, John J.Carroll, S.J., and Fr. Joaquin Bernas, S.J.) haveissued a letter on the Reproductive Health Bill

under the auspices of the Loyola School of Theology and the John J. Carroll Institute onChurch and Social Issues. I pass this on (slightlyabridged for length) without comment butwelcome readers’ comments:

The polarization of Philippine society over theReproductive Health Bill has been a source of discouragement and discontent among Filipinos. It is unfortunate that the debate has focusedonly on whether the Bill should be passed or rejected in its present form. Either option wouldnot be good for Filipinos. The Church sees in theproposed Bill serious flaws that can lead to

violations of human rights and freedom of conscience. It would not be acceptable to pass itin its present form. Total rejection of the Bill, however, will not change the status quo of highrates of infant mortality, maternal deaths, andabortions. It is a moral imperative that suchdehumanizing conditions should not be allowedto continue. What is needed is a third option:critical and constructive engagement.

The Church insists on protection of human lifeupon fertilization. The question to be answeredby the State is if this is the same position it willtake regarding the protection of human life.

The Philippine Constitution says that the Statewill protect the life of the unborn uponconception. It is not specified in the Constitutionwhether conception means fertilization or theimplantation of an embryo in the womb. TheConstitutional Convention seemed to favor fertilization. The definition of conception will havea bearing whether contraceptives that prevent theimplantation of embryos would be legally allowedor not. This definition of conception in theConstitution must be worked out both by medicaland legal experts in order to determine theparameters of what reproductive services can beprovided by the Bill.

At the center of the controversy regardingabortion and the RH Bill are IUDs and other contraceptive medications and devices that mayhave the possible effect of preventing theimplantation of an embryo, which for the CatholicChurch, is considered an abortifacient effect.

Proposal: The State first has to make a clear position whether it considers the prevention of implantation of an embryo as an abortion. If theState takes this position, there must be a carefuland scientifically based evaluation of each of themedicines and devices provided by the Bill. Thosecontraceptive medicines and devices which are

determined to have abortifacient effects are to be

banned even now and regardless of whether theRH Bill is passed or not.

The mandatory nature of the sexuality educationcurriculum proposed by the Bill is a concern for the Church because it would compel Catholiceducators to teach parts of the curriculum thatmay be unacceptable for Catholics. The Churchis also concerned that the parents’ right to decideon the education of their children would bedenied by such a mandatory curriculum for all

schools.Proposal: For the purpose of protecting academicfreedom and respecting religious traditions, should not the right of religious schools to writeand implement their own sexuality educationcurriculum according their religious traditions berespected? For public schools and non-religiousprivate schools, an appointed panel of parentrepresentatives, educators, experts in childdevelopment and psychology, medical experts, and representatives of religious traditions canwrite the sexuality education curriculum and theDEPED can monitor the implementation. Parents

with children in public schools should have theright to have their children exempted from thesexuality education class if the curriculum is notacceptable to them. The Constitution allowsreligious instruction in public schools only if theparents consent in writing. Should a similar provision be enacted relative to sexualityeducation? The Bill must also respect theconscientious objection of individual educatorswho refuse to teach a sexuality curriculum thatviolates their religious beliefs.

Even if the majority of the population of thecountry are Catholics, our democratic systemshould ensure that public polices are notdetermined solely by majority vote but also by acareful consideration of the common good of all, including non-Catholics.

The Compendium of the Social Teaching of theChurch rejects any imposition of norms by amajority that is discriminatory of the rights of aminority: (#422) “Because of its historical andcultural ties to a nation, a religious communitymight be given special recognition on the part of the State. Such recognition must in no waycreate discrimination within the civil or socialorder for other religious groups;” (#169): “Thoseresponsible for government are required to

interpret the common good of their country notonly according to the guidelines of the majoritybut also according to the effective good of all themembers of the community, including theminority.”

It is the duty of various religions to teach their faithful and form their consciences about whattheir religious tradition allows and prohibits withregard to family planning. It is the duty of thegovernment to provide correct andcomprehensive information on all non-abortifacient (as defined by law) family planningmethods that are available. Consciences will thus

be better equipped to make informed choicesaccording to their religious traditions.

Proposal : There can be two separate parallelprograms for providing information and training, one for NFP and another for artificial methods of family planning (with separate budgets). Theseparation of the programs will ensure that NFPwill get adequate funding and those trainers whowish to teach only NFP for religious reasons willnot be forced to teach artificial methods. Theconscience of health workers and trainers shouldbe respected. If a Catholic health worker or trainer

conscientiously objects to teaching contraceptionmethods, he or she should be allowed to teachonly NFP methods.

The current Bill prohibits the refusal of health careservices and information based on a patient’smarital status, gender or sexual orientation, age, religion, personal circumstances, and nature of work. This provision must have parameters. For example, if a doctor refuses to administer an IUDto a minor who requests for it, would that beconsidered age discrimination?

Should the provision apply equally to both in thepublic and private health care providers or

shouldn’t private practitioners have more leewayin practicing their medicine as they see fit?

Proposal:  The question of whether contraceptives are essential medicines should beresolved by a panel of objective medical expertssuch as the Philippine Medical Association. Whatcontraceptives actually prevent diseases? It wouldbe helpful to be able to present cases where theuse of a contraceptive is a medically indicatedtreatment for a particular disease or emergencysituation. If some contraceptives are ultimatelydecided as essential or emergency medicines thatshould be stocked in government health centers

and hospitals, no contraceptives with abortifacienteffects are to be allowed.

The above proposals are intended to generateconstructive and respectful dialogue leading toconcrete actions that would correct the RH Bill. Itis hoped that the parties involved in the RHdebate would move away from hard-line positionsand consider negotiations as a more positive steptowards working for the good of all Filipinos, withspecial consideration for the unborn, the youth, women and families in difficult circumstances.

Finally, we can turn to the following Christianmaxim as our guide in our search for answers

and solutions regarding the RH Bill: “Inessentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; andin all things, charity.” For things pertaining toprotecting human life and dignity, we need to cometo a consensus for the common good; for thingsthat can be left to individual decisions withoutviolating human life and dignity, we need torespect freedom of conscience of every Filipinoboth Catholics and non-Catholics; in all our discussions, we need to speak and act withcharity and understanding as members of thesame human family and community.

DOMINGO SANG P ANGKALIBUTANON

NGA  A DLAW  SA  P AGPANGAMUYO

PARA  SA  BOKASYON

(W ORLD D AY  OF P RAYER FOR V OCATIONS) ___________________Henry Mota, Special Feature

Ang karon nga Domingo nga amo ang ika-apatnga Domingo sang Paskwa kag amo man angDomingo sang Pangkalibutanon nga Adlaw saPagpangamuyo para sa Bokasyon ukon WorldDay of Prayer for Vocations kag subong man ininga Domingo sang Maayo nga Manugbantay.

Ang World Day of Prayer for Vocation (WDPV) gintukod sadtong tuig 1964ni Papa Pablo VI.

missionary life.
