Prayer for Young AthletesHeavenly Father, be with my young athletes as they test their physical skills.Let them play well, but fairly.Let competition make them strong, but never hostile.

Grant them the strength to best their opponent, and lead them to always help the opponent up.Grant them moments to rejoice, but not in the adversity of others.

Help them stay safe from injury, both physical and emotional.Help them to learn something that matters once the game is over.

Help them remember that sports are just games. If they know victory, allow them to be happy. If they are denied, keep them from envy.

If through athletics, they set an example, let it be a good one.In the name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen.

HOMILYON SPORTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS OF THIS YEA RSSECOND CONGRESSIONAL D ISTRICT SPORTS ASSOCIATION MEE T (CDSA II)

Our honorable Mayor, Enrique Rojas,Members of the Sanggunian Bayan, OurDistrict Supervisor and School Principals,Teaching Staff, Coaches, Our young athletesand cultural contestants, guests and friends.Good Morning!

Its a pleasure and honor to be part of theCDSA II events held in the municipality ofLeganes with an opening of the Holy Masswith due respect to other Christian brothersand sisters.

Let me share my short experience on sportsand cultural events. During my high schooldays, I too participated in baseball, volleyball, basketball as well as singing anddeclamation contests. It was my experienceof building up self-confidence and teamwork. As a young priest, I joined martial arts inKungfu, later in Aikido, Arnis and then Iopted for cycling. Partly I learnedself-defense, self-discipline and goodphysical exercise. I learned from theseminary the famous saying: A sound mindand a sound body. At my age a good exerciseis swimming.

The late John Paul II who loved the theatre, swimming and skiing said during the SportsJubilee In Oct. 29, 2000: It is a fittingoccasion to give thanks to God for the gift ofsport, in which the human person exerciseshis body, intellect and will, recognizing theseabilities as so many gifts of his Creator.Rebecca Dussault, Professional Skier wroteon Pope John Paul II and Sports in April,2010:

One of the greatest symbols of sport isbeheld within the Catholic hurch itself andits the late, (Great!) Holy Father John PaulII. Through the many years of his episcopateand papacy he made a lasting impression onthe minds and hearts of athletes and sportsenthusiasts everywhere as to what is theproper place and function of sports forhumankind. The Pope himself lovedathletics like they were his breath. He wasknown to frequently summit mountains,

alpine ski, bike, swim, play soccer orvolleyball and he even found time to enteran international kayaking competition in1955 just five years before being ordained abishop! He was known since the beginningof his papacy as the athlete Pope.

Is it possible to be an athlete and a spiritualman? Perhaps we may have heard of the badside of sports. But we have in our midst aFilipino Champion labeled PambansangKamao.Recently, Manny Pacquiao wasfeatured in the Front Cover of NewsweekMagazine by a non-Catholic journalist,Lawrence Osborne:Boxer, Godfather, saint, politician ... Is there anything in the worldthat Manny cant do? [Oct 30, 2011 10:00 AM

EDT] . From department-store ads and

peeling lottery booths his half-smile beamsdown like the face of a mass-reproducedsaint. He is Pambansang Kamao, theNational Fist. This religious aura is fittingsince Pacquiao himself is intensely devout. After successful fights, which is to say all hisfights, he returns to the church of the BlackNazarene in Manila neighborhood andprays Ironically, then, it is foolish to fly toManila to try to meet Manny Pacquiao. Asone of his aides mentioned to me, Its liketrying to get lunch with Jesus Christ.

Following the thoughts of late John Paul IIsports has great educational and spiritualpotentials towards full development of the

individual and to his enjoyment of life. However, every care must be taken to protectthe human body from damaging its integrity, from any inhuman exploitation and from anycult to worship it.

There must be a willingness to askforgiveness for whatever has been done, ornot done, in the world of sport May thisself-examination offer everyone - managers, technicians and athletes - an opportunity tofind new creative and motivating zeal, so thatsport, without losing its true nature, cananswer the needs of our time: sport thatprotects the weak and excludes no one, thatfrees young people from the snares of apathyand indifference, and arouses a healthy senseof competition in them; sport that is a factorof emancipation for poorer countries andhelps to eradicate intolerance and build amore fraternal and united world; sport whichcontributes to the love of life, teachessacrifice, respect and responsibility, leadingto the full development of every humanperson.

Once again the Apostle Paul has remindedus of this: Every athlete exercisesself-control in all things. They do it to receivea perishable wreath, but we an imperishable(1 Cor 9: 25). Every Christian is called tobecome a strong athlete of Christ, that is,a faithful and courageous witness to hisGospel. But to succeed in this, he mustpersevere in prayer, be trained in virtue andfollow the divine Master in everything.

He, in fact, is Gods true athlete: Christ isthe more powerful Man (cf. Mk 1: 7), whofor our sake confronted and defeated theopponent, Satan, by the power of the HolySpirit, thus inaugurating the kingdom ofGod. He teaches us that, to enter into glory,we must undergo suffering (cf. Lk 24: 26,46);he has gone before us on this path, so thatwe might follow in his footsteps.

Finally, my blessings and prayerful wishes

for the success of CDSA II.

INVOCATION PRAYERWe recall the book of Proverbs 8:27-31

    on how Wisdom plays:

When he established the heavens I wasthere, when he marked out the vault over

the face of the deep; when he made firm

the skies above, when he fixed fast the

foundations of the earth; when he set for

the sea its limit, so that the waters shouldnot transgress his command; Then was I

beside him as his nursling, and I was his

delight day by day, Playing before him allthe while, playing on the surface of his

earth; and I found delight in the human

    race.

Dear Lord, with our Mayor, MunicipalOfficials and school heads particularly of

this Municipality of Leganes, we arehonored and humbled to host this years

    Second Congressional District Sports

    Association Meet (CDSA II) on

November 6 - 9, 2011. We believe andacknowledge your sovereign presence in

this annual sports and cultural event

    which is participated by eight

municipalities. At the same time we areoverwhelmed by the expected attendance

of 2,000 athletes, coaches, technical staff

    and school officials

In the words of the late John Paul II, Ipray: Lord Jesus Christ, help these

athletes to be your friends and witnessesto your love. Help them to put the same

effort into personal asceticism that theydo into sports; help them to achieve a

harmonious and cohesive unity of bodyand soul. May they be sound models to

imitate for all who admire them. Help

them always to be athletes of the spirit,

to win your inestimable prize: animperishable crown that lasts forever.

    Amen!

Altogether allow us to pray for one

    another: Please, Lord, bless todays

game, our opponent, our team and all

watching our play. Thank you for theopportunity to compete and bring out

the best in each other. May we play hard

and fair. Please keep everyone safe from

injury and harm. Remind us that we arecalled to give our best and to finish the

race while caring for others along the

    way.

tanan sa ngalan sang Amay, kag sangAnak kag sang Espiritu Santo. Amen.

Two Sundays from now we will cometo the end of the present liturgical yearmarked by the Feast of Christ the King. The end of every liturgical yearsignifies the end time -the time to meet

Christ Jesus. Thus, the Church has toremind us of this final coming ofJesus. At this time Jesus will come notas the Savior of the world but as its

    judge.

The aim of the Church is not to instillfear in our hearts but to renew ourcourage. The Church having broughtus into the Kingdom of God, taught ushow to live in this Kingdom as itsfaithful citizens should, the Churchmakes it sure that Jesus will find us

worthy to remain within this Kingdomfor good. In this final coming of Jesus,

the Lord will decide who among us willstay on this Kingdom and those who

will be left out of His Kingdom. Hisjudgment will be based on how wiseor foolish we are.

This explains the reason why duringthese three Sundays preceding thefeast of Christ the King, the Churchinvites us to recall the coming of JesusChrist - the great event that will takeplace for each of us at our death at theend time. In the gospel it is very clearthat Jesus is inviting each of us to

make sure that the light of the lamp ofour faith be brightly burning when Hecomes at the hour of our death.

Jesus came into the world tocommunicate to us His Fathersloving plan to save us and to give usthe light and the strength to live inaccordance with that plan. God couldhave sent us anybody to teach us butthere is no better teacher than His son.

A good and efficient teachercommunicates the truth and shows hisstudents the way that leads to realhappiness but anything beyond these

there is little that he could do to makehis students life successful. Jesus, onthe other hand, goes beyond theordinary. He offered Himself to be the

Way that leads us to God, the Truthwhich fully satisfies and the Life whichknows no death.

Anybody who follows Jesus willalways be on the right way. Anybody

who knows Jesus will never remain inthe darkness of falsehood. Anybody

who is with Jesus possesses Life thatknows no death. Along this vein, it issaid that those who are truly wisefollow Jesus faithfully throughouttheir lives. To follow Jesus waveringly

and hesitantly is a sheer foolishnessas shown in the parable of the

    bridesmaid.

A close scrutiny of the parable foundin the gospel reading, we could find somany inconsistencies that do not takeplace in a normal setting. The

banquet rooms door is never closed;no Jewish girl is so foolish enough notto take extra oil for her lamp to lastthroughout the night. Jesus did thisin order to adapt the parable to themeaning he wishes to convey to Hislisteners.

At baptism, each one of us received asGods gift a lamp brightly lit and wellprovide with oil. This lamp representsthe life in the Spirit and the gift of faith

in Christ which ought to light our waythrough the darkness of this world.Hence, we must keep adding oil whichis the true Christian life to our lampor else it will go out. Many of usneglect to add this oil and wentthrough long periods in his /her life

    with his/her lamp extinguished.

We must keep in mind that wind, storms and earthquakes, as well asother calamities; (our temptations)also threaten the flame of our lamp.

As such, we must protect it diligently. Finally, while we are wafting for thecoming of Jesus we should not neglectour spiritual life. Once we die, the timeto buy oil for our lamp is over.

Whenever serious sin extinguishes thelight of our lamp we should hasten tolight it again.

The problem confronting us is thesame problem that the earlycommunities were facing that Christapparently delays His coming unduly. So, we get tired of waiting. Thisseeming delay of Jesus leads us tothink that His coming is still a long

way off. Consequently, like thebridesmaids in the parable, a lot of usChristians are taken aback when Jesuscomes at our death. We then findourselves with our lamps extinguishedand with no way of lighting them upagain.

Each one of us, at our death, will bedeclared as wise or foolish for good. The declaration will be based not onthe quantity of books we read nor onthe number of dissertations we wrote

but on the way did we live ourChristian life. We better start nowgrowing truly wise right now!

JMB @ 14, MOVING FORWARD.. .The Leganes Youth has been a part and parcel of the St. Vincent Ferrer Parishthrough the years. There are various youth organizations existing and lastSeptember 1997, when Jerusalem Mass started every Sunday at 4:00pm,Jerusalem Mass Barkadahan or JMB was formed. It consists of talented youngpeople from different barangays in Leganes serving in the parish according totheir own forte be it in the choir, lector / commentator, altar servers or Wings!.

But as time goes by, the youth was brought into a more focused and committedministry. The social and spiritual participation of the young members wereintensified when the JMB continues its journey through the SVF YouthCommission and the current SVF Parish Youth Ministry.

Though to this present time, the JMB Youth Choir is the only memento that hasremained. But because Things were really different back when we were youngerand the members are already going to a more responsible life, JMB has tomove on To move forward to the next level and give way to the newgeneration the SVF Childrens Choir.

This is not yet goodbye for us because we are still committed to serve God -in other ministries or in other ways. But we would just like to express ourgratitude to JMB as the youth group that has facilitated us to become moreproductive, responsible citizens of our community and has equipped us with thesocial and spiritual way of living. Thank you also to all those who has beensupportive for the 14 years of our existence in SVF Parish.

Things may pass, but one thing will remain: the realizations and significant

learning we had gained from our experiences because these things wouldcontinue to help us in achieving our goals in life with the loving guidance ofGod. ~Zarah Scarlet Guiloreza-Dormido

It has been 14 years now, and Im so proud to be one of the members of JMB.Being a part of the Youth Choir was such a unique and fulfilling experience, tobe able to sing with such a diverse group of people and it meant the world tome. Ive always enjoyed participating in music - singing and dancing, becauseI can express myself freely.. Its only through Jerusalem Mass Barkadahan, that I find myself developed as a better individual. It will be a part of me that I willalways cherish. I AM A PROUD JMB MEMBER! ~Cristina Marie Medez

Being with JMB for 14 years was a great experience for me. It was indeed agreat opportunity for me that I was able to share my God-given talent and at thesame time, I had met and gained a lot of friends. To my JMB family, thank you.=) ~Janice Sulit

Nine (9) years of service was indeed a great achievement for me. With JMB,I gained a lot of friends, learned a lot of things to improve on myself and I wasable to impart my knowledge & skills. I am very much honored and privileged tobe a part of this group. :) We may not be perfect, but we serve a perfectGod.JMB rocks! ~Danielle Centeno

JMB has been my life for almost my entire teenage experience for 8 years. It isa fulfilling activity to be with other youths in service for our beloved Shrine. I ama part of the Music Ministry for the past 8 years. Through this, I have metmusicians that molded me, friends that changed my life and a family that couldlast a life time. JMB is much more than an organization but a family sharing acommon bond to render selfless service and commitment to our mentor and ourbest friend, Jesus. I hope we could strengthen this bond in years to come.Friends will come and go but my JMB BARKADA will last for a lifetime.Thank you JMB for the ideal service that you taught me. I AM A PROUD JMBFOREVER!!! ~Reste Marion Martizano

Being part of the JMB for about 3 years, was a great blessing for me. I wasgiven the privilege and opportunity to meet wonderful people like my Manangsand Manongs, who eventually turned out to be my best buddies. Theexperience gave me the chance to share my talent and as well give it back tothe Lord through my service in the afternoon mass. I will never forget you myBeloved JMB Family. God has better plans for us. I Love JMB! ~Cassy Jimeno

#SOLID JMB. ~Mary Aisa Celiz

Have pity on us, at least you, our fr iends, because the hand of the Lord has touched us.

Give and it shall be given to you.Remember that poor souls are grateful souls:

If you help them, they will help you.

Sin-o

ini sila? Those faithful Christians who have died andgone before us but who are still must atone for theirsins. The time they spend in Purgatory cleanses themso that they may enter Heaven free from all effects ofsin. The Church commemorates all her faithfulchildren who have departed from this life, but have notyet attained the joys of heaven. St. Paul warns us thatwe must not be ignorant concerning the dead, norsorrowful, even as others who have no hope...For the Lord Himself shall come down from heaven ...and the dead who are in Christ shall rise. The Churchhas always taught us to pray for those who have goneinto eternity. Even in the Old Testament prayers andalms were offered for the souls of the dead by thosewho thought well and religiously concerning the

resurrection. It was believed that they who had fallenasleep with godliness had great grace laid up for themand that it is therefore a holy and wholesome thoughtto pray for the dead, that they may be loosed fromsins. We know that a defiled soul cannot enter intoheaven.

During November the Church especially prays for allwho are in the purifying fires of Purgatory, waiting forthe day when they will join the company of the saintsin heaven. The celebration of Mass is the highestmeans the Church can provide for charity for the dead, but we can also relieve their sufferings through ourprayers, sufferings and penances. We an also helpthe Poor Souls by doing acts and prayers that haveindulgences attached to them. There are many

indulgences, applicable only to the souls in Purgatory, which can be obtained during the month of November.

It must first berecalled that a Catholic cemetery is a holy place,

being consecrated ground, especially blessed by theChurch to receive the bodies, temples of the HolyGhost, that will rise up to meet Our Lord, the SupremeJudge, on the last day. It is for this reason that it wasalways considered obligatory for the bodies of faithfulCatholics to be buried in Catholic cemeteries(Canon 1205, 1 of the 1917 Code).

A visit to a cemetery is consequently an act of religion,as is the special care of the cemetery and of the tombsof those who are buried there. It inspires a Catholicwith reverence, awe for Gods judgments, respect for

the souls of those whose bodies are buried there, withan awareness of the brevity of this earthly life, and ofthe union of the Church militant with the Churchsuffering in the mystical body of Christ. Special gracesare consequently attached to silent and prayerfulvisits to cemeteries. It can easily be understood whyChurch law prescribes that each parish have its owncemetery (Canon 1208), and why it is the traditionalcustom for it to be physically adjoining the parish.

However, if Catholics love to visit cemeteries, it isespecially out of a motive of charity. We long to assistthe suffering souls in purgatory by our prayers, sacrifices, and Masses, given that we are united asmembers of the same mystical body. A physical visitto a cemetery is a great help in inciting us to this duty

of charity. It is for this reason that the Church hasgenerously enriched with her indulgences visits tocemeteries. During the eight days fromNovember 1-8, any of the faithful can, simply byvisiting a cemetery and praying for the poor souls, obtain a plenary indulgence, applicable to the poorsouls in purgatory, under the usual conditions. At othertimes of the year this is a partial indulgence.

Let us consequently be generous and regular with ourvisits to Catholic cemeteries, and let us never passone by without stopping to recite a short prayer for thepoor souls there, or at least reciting such a prayer aswe go by.

Ginasiling nga: Prayer for the deadhowever is one of the greatest acts of charity we canperform, to help them during their time in Purgatory,so that they can enter more quickly into the fullness ofheaven.
