It has certainly been a BIG month for Paynesville Bowling Club !.... and what great results all round with another Premiership flag coming home to Paynesville... this time thanks to our Saturday, Division 2 Gold Side. So well done fellas on a great win on the day by 10 shots against the favourites - Bairnsdale Blue - and also for giving us cause for further and ‘much celebration’ at the Club!. Congratulations also to Bairnsdale on picking up three Premierships (Divs. 1,3 & 4) in Saturday Pennant - a great result for their Club as well. Not to be outdone, our Mid-Week Div. 2 Premiers, playing off in their Regionals, also had a great win over Maffra by 20 shots to take out the Shield - and saying they were pleased would be an under-statement ... STOKED! is more the word - just see their photo further over in the newsletter.

Win, lose or draw however - the wonderful support from you, our club members, who regularly come along throughout the season, has certainly made all the difference, boosted morale and been greatly appreciated by all

our players. So a big “THANKYOU SUPPORTERS!” from the players -

and also to our reserves who made themselves available whenever needed.

The season has not quite finished yet though !.... there are still a few

fixtures coming up.... so please check your noticeboards and take note of any changes via David’s regular email news updates..... plus, you know we’ve only got a few weeks to go before our very popular Saturday morning, 2xbowl Triples starts in May! ... a monthly sponsored event over May, June, July and August. FROM YOUR PRESIDENTS:

Ladies’ Section - President Lori Smith: Our season is drawing to a close. What a great year we've had with both Div 1 and 2 getting through to the finals. Div 1 sadly didn't get through but congratulations to Div 2 for bringing home the flag. Not only that, but went on to win the Regional Final. Congratulations to you all Well done. Our thanks to all ladies who played throughout the season in all Divisions and many thanks to those fellas who helped us out and filled in. Make sure your names are down for next year if you think you want to play (men and ladies) We finished the season with the great lunch at the Old Pub which was a very successful day.

Ladies Invitation Day proved very successful with 104 players on the greens. It was a great day and many thanks indeed to all who put in to make this day what it was. Several positive comments from our many visitors helped to make this day a day to be proud of. Thank you everyone.

The McGraths, Joan Oliver and I had a great weekend at the Tambo Valley Mixed Fours. It was great to see this struggling club so well supported. Next year, try to get a team together to enter this event as it was loads of fun and well worth the effort.

Wednesday 22nd March we hosted the Paynesville Probus Club for their AGM plus a light lunch.. Once again a huge thanks to the ladies who worked on the meal for this day. We had a lovely letter of thanks from Rob Kimm, Secretary of Probus, thanking us for our hospitality and hoping they can do the same next year. It was well worth our effort with approximately $800 profit. It's events such as this that are a huge bonus to the club.

24th March saw several of our ladies joining the fun at Bairnsdale Golf Fab 5 Day. This is a day five of their lady members sponsor a fun day at their club. This year the theme was Back to School. Most of the 96 players dressed up as school girls Loads of fun.

Congratulations to Colleen Such on winning the 21up and to the runner up Elizabeth Plum and to-day to Wilma Fowden for winning the 100up and runner up Kath Holland

Ladies, you are reminded that the last bowling event for this season is Friendship Day on Tuesday 11th April Please put your names in particularly if you have asked a friend from another club. Also Ladies please bring a plate of afternoon tea.

Finally we have Presentation Night on 26th April. $10 per head for a great dinner and the presentations to all winners and runners up of all championships and pennant finals. Also presentations to Ladies Veterans (over 70), and all Super Veterans (over 80 men and ladies.) Maggie from ‘Encore’ has offered to join us for the night and entertain us while we eat. Please support this night if you can as I know several of our members will be away. Happy bowling, Lori.

Men’s Section - President David McGrath: This season is rapidly drawing to an end, but we still have some important events and functions coming up.

Congratulations and best wishes to Colleen Such, Jo Martin, Marge Nathan, and Jason McCloy on being named in the Region Representative sides which will compete in the State Regional Sides Championships. The girls will compete at Murray Downs B.C on April 1

st-2

nd. Jason will be involved

at Corowa on April 29th-30

th. Great to

see our club well-represented at this level.

Congratulations to out Mid-week Div 2 Premiers who also won the Region title recently, and to our Div 2 Saturday Premiers who put up a valiant effort with a depleted side, to only go down by 8 shots in their Region Final at Maffra.

It was unfortunate that we had to cancel the Men’s Classic Pairs due to insufficient entries. The future of this

event will have to be addressed by the incoming committees. We were also disappointed at the lack of entries for the Men’s 21-Up Club Championship , which resulted in that event also being cancelled.

Our Annual Presentation Night will be held on Wednesday 26th April.

All trophy winners are urged to attend, as well as all members of our Premiership pennant teams who will be presented with medallions. Special achievements will also be recognised , and our Vets and Super Vets will be presented with badges. All other members should consider attending to show their support.

There will be a two-course meal, and we also are fortunate to have Maggie, from the former ‘Encore’, coming along to sing us a few songs during the night. Maggie has volunteered her services as a token of her appreciation of all the enjoyable nights she has had at our club with ‘Encore’ at our Dinner Dances over the past few years. The cost for the night is a very modest $10 per head. Don’t miss out. Get your names down on the attendance list ASAP.

Annual General Meetings for Men’s Ladies’ and Club are fast approaching. Nominations are now being called for all positions on the Men’s and Ladies’ Committees and Sub-Committees. Have a good think about who you would like to see guiding the club through the next 12 months. Seek nominations from interested or suitable members, or if you are willing to do your bit, seek a nominator.

Men’s AGM is Friday 28th April at 1 pm

We have only two events yet to play. Ladies’ Friendship Day which is on Tuesday 11

th April, and the Mixed Pairs sponsored by Bairnsdale Travel

and Cruise on Friday 19th May. Please try to support this event and

encourage players from other clubs to also enter.

Following surveys of all clubs’ members, the EGBD Competitions Committee have advised some changes to next year’s pennant. Mid-Week and Saturday pennant will now play 21 ends, and Saturday Pennant will no longer have an afternoon tea break. ( N.B. This decision is yet to be officially ratified by EGBD). Further down the track, the Competitions Committee will examine options and suggestions for possible format changes for future seasons.

For those who are heading off soon for the winter migration, please travel safely. To those remaining at home and helping to keep our club running smoothly over winter, I say thank you.

This is a great club. Please everybody, do your bit to continue to help it remain that way. Regards, David

GREENS REPORT: The Members Green will be open as

from the 22ND

March after a top dress and it will be good to commence bowling on it again. The Founders is running well, although a little bumpy due to the coarse couch mainly effecting the jack. The Anderson has been given a top dress by Darren,

assisted by Bob Mckenzie, Gary Williams and myself .... thanks guys for the help. Darren will be doing more work on this green over the next month as the club can manage without it The lack of rain has not helped: Jan/Feb 2016 = 115mm vs Jan/Feb 2017 = 43MM. However, some rain is expected in the short term. The black beetles also continue to be a nuisance. ...David Seaborne, Greens Manager

The club was buzzing at our annual Ladies'

Invitation Fours, which brought together about 100 bowlers from 13 clubs throughout the region. As always, our catering crew provided wonderful home baked biscuits to start, home made quiche (thanks Pam Hoodless) and salad for lunch, and an assortment of nibbles for afternoon tea. Invitation Day is not all about the competition; it's also about friendship and sharing our love of bowls. Thanks to Colleen Such for organising the event and all those behind the scenes who ensured the day went smoothly. Many thanks also to our sponsors, King and Heath Real Estate and Peter Murray Funerals for their support. The winners after 3 games were the girls from Orbost, who overcame their fatigue from their great win the day before against Maffra in the Division 1 Midweek pennant regional final. Well done to Orbost and to all who joined us for another successful Invitation Day.

LADIES’ 21- UP

CHAMPIONSHIP:

The final of the ladies’ 21-UP on Friday, March 10

th,

was a great tussle between Elizabeth Plum and Colleen Such - two great proponents of the draw game. Getting into her stride early in the piece, Colleen went on to win the game decisively. Liz also put in some great bowls... this being her third consecutive 21-Up final having won the previous two. Well done ladies on a great final. A riddle for our seniors: You’re on a horse, galloping at a constant speed. On your left side is a sharp drop-off. On your right side is an elephant travelling at the same speed as you. Directly in front of you is a bounding kangaroo and your horse is unable to overtake it. Behind you is a lion running at the same speed as you and the kangaroo. What must you do to get out of this highly dangerous situation? (See answer on the back page) ------------------------------------------------------------

East Gippsland v North Gippsland Sides Championship played at Heyfield on Sunday 19

(Peter Hardy and Jason McCloy were part of the East Gippsland team): From Peter: “You might like to add to this week’s club news that East Gippsland defeated north Gippsland by 3 shots in the annual stoush which was held at Heyfield this past Saturday. This is the first time that anyone could remember East winning this event. The Perpetual Trophy was to be presented to the winning side!!!! well it wasn’t, as nobody knows where it is. The pleasing thing for our club was that Jason McCloy was selected in the combined North/East team to go to Corowa on the 28th-30th April to play in the divisional play offs.” Well done Peter

and Jason for helping get East Gippsland over the line, and congratulations to Jason on making the Gippsland Region representative side.

LADIES’ 100-UP CHAMPIONSHIP

On the day of the semi finals...although it looked like we were in for a rainy day ... the weather held and spectators enjoyed two entertaining games between Wilma Fowden vs Bronwyn Thwaites and Val Hardy vs Kath Holland. Wilma and Kath both won through to make it to the Finals held on Tuesday 28

th March in perfect

weather conditions. Congratulations go to Wilma, the winner on the day, and well done Kath, Runner-up. Again, a very close game until the last few ends. It was Wilma’s second 100-Up win and her first using an arm. Photos above L to R: Wilma Fowden and Bronwyn Thwaites, Val Hardy and Kath Holland

Some of our members are dealing with some serious medical issues at the moment.... so to all our sickies and those undergoing ‘repair’ - seems to be ongoing at our age I’m afraid - our best wishes for a speedy recovery... & to all those about to celebrate another ‘milestone’ ...have a good one too!

Members of the Paynesville Probus Club - who held their AGM at the club recently - congratulated two of our longest serving members and a great couple.... Pat and Rowan Smith .... on celebrating their 60

th

Wedding Anniversary... certainly a great achievement and we do hope they enjoy many more years together. Congratulations also to our club members: Margaret Hutton - the incoming Probus President, Robert Kimm (Secretary), Frances McGrath (Outings Officer), David McGrath (Explorers Group) and Barbara Barke & Roy Carter (M/Tea Providors) ... so apart from working hard for our Club, they also do a great job for our local Probus. A very big pat-on-the-back too to our hard-working “dinner ladies” (and Gervan our trusty barman) who put on a lovely lunch of soup and sweets for Probus following their AGM....just yummy and I heard nothing but great comments from everyone.

Don’t forget Happy Hour every Friday and your chance to win the jackpot..... and congrats to Roy Carter who took it out AGAIN! ....you have to be there on the night if you want the $$$$$$$$$ !!!.

CLUB MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

The weather couldn’t have been better on Wednesday 29th

for the final of the Mixed Pairs held between the teams of Colleen Such & Col Smith vs Ken Perkins & Katch Holland. Colleen reported “We needed 6 on the last end to tie and play an extra end. Col bowled a cracker and got rid of their 2 bowls and we got a 5. So we only lost by one in the end.”....ain’t it the way!... but a great finish and congratulations to Ken and Kath on taking out the Championship.

Members, this is the 10th

year that I’ve been doing the newsletter and probably time that somebody new took on the job with a fresh approach.... it certainly doesn’t have to be the same length, or in the same format as I’ve been doing... it’s whatever you want to make it. Both Bronwyn and David are doing a great job with our website and email news keeping you informed..... but a few members still like to get a hard copy of club news. So if anyone out there wants to put their hand up... please come forward and let me know.... I’ve certainly enjoyed doing it and learned a lot about my computer and desktop publishing as well ....and I thank the club for the opportunity, but, until I get a volunteer....I’ll continue on.

Now, it won’t be long before a good chunk of you ... and our ‘grey nomads’ ....will be heading off to various parts of the country..... ticking things off your ‘bucket list’..... so prepare well people, travel light, drive safe and most importantly....ENJOY THE JOURNEY! ...and remember...just about every place has a bowling club that wants to make you welcome...so take your bowls! ....and spruke our Week of Bowls 2018 ...the 20

th one

coming up next February ...

..... Cheers !
