As you know, one of the biggest things to consider when renting is your choice of location. Unlike furniture, paint and being a good neighbour, it’s the one thing that you cannot change, so it’s important to choose well. What are the other critical things to consider when choosing a location? There are so many personal variables it’s really up to you to decide. As an example, if it is just as important to you to be close to your children’s school as it is to your place of work, then look for a place that offers you the best of both worlds. If you aren’t keen on owning a car and want to use public transportation whenever possible to save on parking and gas costs, a well-connected mass transit location may be a better option for you. If you’re a walker, close proximity to major amenities should be a definite consideration. Doing errands such as grocery shopping and banking on foot not only offers many health benefits, it gives you a chance to meet new neighbours and discover new places too. Don’t let the cost of rent solely dictate your choice of location. Make a list of your priorities first, and then take the time to assess each location for its merits and weight your options.

know what I love most about living in an apartment? That it’s such an easy lifestyle. No fixing, no maintenance, no unexpected repair expenses, no handiwork or honey-do list. Actually, that last one is my husband’s
favourite part.
As life gets busier and free time becomes more precious, it becomes harder to justify the do-it-yourself projects that homeowners seem to constantly have on the go. And if it’s not time, it’s money – a roof, a plumber, an electrician.
Apartment living has all that covered in the price of rent. Forget trying to figure out if the plumber really is giving you a fair price or the entire roof really needs to be replaced – you’ve got better things to do.
While good property management companies try to be proactive about maintenance, sometimes things happen. But instead of figuring out which trades to call and how to pay for surprise repairs, you just need to alert the property management. Many offer 24/7 service call centres, but all will have instruction for who to call when an issue arises. Things happen, no building is immune – but as a renter, it’s not your problem!
This is also where picking a good property management company comes in. Professionally run companies with reputations for customer service are key – it’s something you should check before renting a new home. Hopefully you’ll never need to see what their response time is, but if you need them, it’s good to know they’re always there for you. It’s a lot less stressful – and a lot less expensive – than owning!

Meet dixie. As A universitY student sHe wAs sent A Credit CArd And wHAt witH no inCoMe And lots oF teMptAtion, Dixie ended up falling way behind on her payments. The result: a store clerk took away her card and cut it up right in front of her. How embarrassing! While the pain of being dissed publicly may have dulled over time, the damage done to her credit history lingers. To make matters worse, at university Dixie was a little slow paying her cell phone bill. While her service was never discontinued, she did carry a balance from month to month that she cleared at the end of each school year.
Last year, when Dixie applied for a car loan, she was turned down because of her crappy repayment history. She’s worried about the future and how her past borrowing mistakes will haunt her. Sound familiar?
If you see yourself reflected in Dixie’s story, no doubt by now you know you’re not the only person in this particular leaky boat. Unfortunately, many people have no experience managing credit make mistake after mistake:
• they make their payments late
• they go over their credit limits
• they have a b’zillion credit cards in their wallets
• they miss making their payments, or worse
• they stop making payments completely when they feel there’s no end to their misery.
If you’ve fallen behind and your credit record has become tarnished, where should you go from here?
First, you’ve got to get yourself some credit again so that you can demonstrate what a good job you can do managing it. The only way to establish a credit history is to use and repay credit. There are a number of ways to go about rebuilding your credit history.
Take out a loan to make an investment (another good reason to start a retirement savings plan), make your monthly payments on time and build a shiny new credit history. Since the institution that’s giving you the loan will also be holding the retirement savings, the credit procedure is far less stringent than it normally would be.
Ask a co-signer or guarantor to help you get a small loan of, say, $1,000, which you would then pay off over three months. It would cost you in interest, but you would be back on track credit-wise.
Don’t want to incur the interest costs? Apply for a “secured” credit card. With a secured credit card, you put up cash to cover your balance. Lenders often want twice the credit card limit, so if you want a $500 credit limit, you’ll have to ante up $1,000. Once you’ve established your ability to manage the card – anywhere from six months to a year – you can ask for the security requirement to be dropped and your deposit returned.
Thinking of hiring a credit-repair company? Don’t bother. Credit repair companies can’t do anything you can’t. A credit bureau will not remove accurate negative information from your credit report before the legal time period has expired so don’t get suckered by anyone who claims they can mop up your credit disasters faster. There are no “loopholes.” The only way to fix a poor credit rating is to be smart about how you use credit. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

YOU SPEND A THIRD OF YOUR DAY in your bedroom, so it should be a relaxing place to unwind and get that important beauty sleep your body needs. Recently, I gave my bedroom a major makeover. Here are my top tips to create a beautiful and comfortable bedroom retreat on any budget.
COOL COLOUR PALETTE. I’ve had red bedrooms and I’ve had pale blue rooms. I can honestly say colour psychology is real. A cool, serene, colour palette makes all the difference in creating a relaxing room. Go for soft and subtle colours if you want a respite from the busy world outside. For my bedroom makeover, I chose Whistle Stop 50BB from CIL’s paint collection to create a calming effect.
THE PERFECT BED. I had an awkward small window in my bedroom that I had to hide. I chose a padded headboard that was just high enough to cover the window.
I wouldn’t call myself a DIY’er, but when the time comes, I can step up. I found a headboard with clean lines at HomeSense (homesense.ca) for $300. However, it wasn’t quite the right colour for my project. When I found a cotton, patterned shower curtain for $30, I thought I’d tackle a DIY project and create the perfect headboard. Voilà! A custom-made headboard on a budget.
SIDE TABLE CONUNDRUM. Side tables are a useful element to every bedroom. But it can be hard to choose the right one. So many questions come to mind! Do I need extra drawers or countertop space? What height, size, colour or material should I choose? For my makeover, I needed something to match the height and scale of the bed. I found the perfect side table at mirens.com. The side tables had a unique design, with added bedroom storage. With my DIY skills already set in motion, I swapped
the handles to white, to tie in with the rest of the bedroom design. Another inexpensive project with a big result!
LAYERED LIGHTING. I love a bedroom with ambient lighting. A lamp with a soft bulb, mixed with task lighting for reading a book, plus decorative side lamps can add some drama to a room. The white horned oversized side lamps from Mirens I used in my bedroom were the perfect conversational piece in the room. Don’t forget about overhead lighting. This is another great place to add some art to the room. I used a signature Jo Alcorn light from artcraftlighting.com, which added a touch of whimsy to the room. Layering lighting in any room, particularly your bedroom, allows for the perfect mix of function and comfort.
COMFY CARPET OR RUG. Having the perfect texture underfoot when you step out of bed can improve your whole bedroom experience. Rugs add warmth to any space.
MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL. I love how mirrors create different dimensions within a space. To bring the bed and those amazing lamps to another level, I layered HomeSense mirrors on the wall to add a grand, romantic feeling to the bedroom. Mirrors make your room appear larger, and these ones also added a feeling of luxury and sophistication to the bedroom.
