FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK 2007 marks the 140th Anniversary of the Sturgis Library, which opened its doors as a public library for the first time in the summer of 1867. As many of you know, Captain William Sturgis upon his death in 1863 willed his childhood home to be used as a library. The home was originally built in 1644 as a meetinghouse for Sturgis’ ancestor and one of Barnstable’s original founders, the Reverend John Lothrop. The original building has the distinction of being the oldest building housing a public library in the country, as well as the oldest structure still standing in America where religious services were regularly held. The Board of Trustees and staff of the Sturgis Library have the privilege of being stewards of this wonderful historic building. During its lifetime the building has undergone a number of additions and renovations, most of them in the last forty years. This fall the library required additional repairs and renovations. Work included reshingling of the sides of the building; repair and painting of the front clapboards, trim, and windows; replacement of the front gutter; upgrades and repairs to the electrical and telephone systems; and important masonry work on the walkway and around the building to address drainage and leaking issues, and also to provide a safe entryway into the library. We want to thank Rustic Masonry, Kevin Ryan Painting, and Fraser Construction for their excellent work. We also would like to thank Cape Cod Brass Company for donating a new door knocker for our front door. By the time this newsletter goes to press new storm windows will have been installed on the original building. We are grateful to All Cape Aluminum and the window manufacturers for providing us with high-quality windows at a discounted price. Thanks to the generosity of the many people who responded to our appeal to “Adopt a Window,” the storm window project has been completely underwritten through private donations. Donors included the Bearse family, Jeff & Terry Boyd, Ellie & Clyde Claus, Joanne B. Chope Corsiglia, John Crowell, John & Cathy Damon, Peter & Eleanor Donovan, Dr. William N. & Mary Anne Fenney, Friends of Sturgis Library, Ellen Gruhn, Roy Hammer & Jim Hinkle, Louise Harrington, Marilyn Hill & Aaron Perlmutter, Yumiko Hough, Sarah Magruder & Michael Wardman, Adele Harvey McKeever, Thomas & Evelyn Mullen, Bob and Suzy O’Brien, John & Evie Obbard, Donald & Diane Michaels, and William Saunders. We are most grateful to each of them. We’re looking forward to an exciting year ahead as we celebrate 140 years of service to the Village and Town of Barnstable. Since we rely on private donations for half of our annual funding, we want to begin the new year with a heartfelt thank-you to all of you who support the library each year. We can truly say that we couldn’t do what we do without your support and your patronage. For a complete list of donors to our Annual Appeal, please see pages 9-11. Many of you have asked about our bake sale and ornament auction. Combined, we raised almost $1,000.00. Again, let me express our appreciation for your support. Lucy Loomis, Library Director

Book Writing Center

Hi everyone! This is my first chance to communicate in the newsletter as the current Children’s Services Librarian. My name is Tim Johnson. I began in September and it took several months to feel settled in my new post. My first pri-ority was reorganizing the physical space in the children’s room. My second priority has been to make the room more interactive.

The Friends of the Library have been most kind and generous to our children’s program this fall. They have purchased a terrific “treehouse/dollhouse” which greets guests at the entrance to the children’s room. It’s inhabited by a friendly family of carved wooden folk and provides a great addition to the wooden train set.

If you were to visit the children’s room over this holiday break from school, you would find several interactive centers set up for adventure and creative fun. One is a book writing center. Blank books and art materials are available for children to use in writing their very own story. The book, “All About Butterflies” was written by a frequent weekend visitor, Helen Field, granddaughter of Sturgis Library board member, Sheila Bearse.

F r o m t h e C h i l d r e n ’ s R o o m

We’re replacing picture and juvenile book selections read-aloud on cassette tape with books read- aloud on CD. Why? Well, frankly fewer and fewer parents own a tape player, and so the books on tape were pretty much sitting around bored and gathering dust. A CD can fit nicely in a pocket at the front of the book and will not require uncommon shelf space.

Parents have told me these read-alouds are great during car trips, while mom or dad is cooking and so on. They are a nice alternative to watching television.

I am currently reading/recording a large selection of children’s books on CD.

Many thanks to the Friends of Sturgis for their gift of a CD player for the children’s room, complete with headphones that require no wires!! (infra-red instead!). Now youngsters can hear books on tape without disturbing patrons in other sections of the library.

Interview with child author, Helen Field, age 7 Tim: Helen, what inspired you to write a story in the children’s room? Helen: Well, my brother is in the Butterfly class at school. Tim: Tell our readers about your book. Helen: It has chapters. It has facts about butterflies and it has poems. Tim: Who will you read your book to? Helen: My brother!

Books on Tape, (no, I mean CD!)

Beginning with just a handful of faithful story hour guests, the Wednesday afternoon hour now attracts dozens.

STURGIS LIBRARY RECEIVES GIFT OF HISTORIC STURGIS CLOCK FACE This fall the Trustees of the Sturgis Library were very pleased to accept a gift of an historic wooden clock face from the daughters of Reverend Raymond and Mary B. Ward of Monterey, Massachusetts. The clock face is inscribed “Donation of Russell Sturgis, Esq., 1806.” The clock face has been in the possession of the Ward family off and on for nearly 100 years. It is unknown on what building or in what town the clock face was originally located. Rev. and Mrs. Ward visited the Sturgis Library in the 1980s and did some research into the lives of Russell and William Sturgis, and soon realized the important family connection between the two men. Russell Sturgis (pictured here in a portrait by his friend, Gilbert Stuart) was originally from Barnstable and was a noted Boston merchant in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. William F. Sturgis entered into the New England counting house of his uncle, Russell Sturgis, in 1796. He later partnered with Russell

Sturgis’ brothers-in-law, James and Thomas Perkins, who were engaged in the lucrative fur trade between the Pacific Northwest coast and China. In 1863 William Sturgis willed his childhood home in Barnstable to be used as a library in the Town of Barnstable. It opened its doors in 1867 and has been operating as a public library for the last 140 years. We are most grateful to the Wards and their daughters – Leslie Paine, Sally Pullen, and Louise Henry, for reuniting Russell and William Sturgis by their gift of this wonderful piece of Americana. The clock face now hangs in the Hooper Room, one of the original rooms of the Sturgis Library and home to its genealogical and local history collections.

THE LEGACY OF ANNE AND OTTO FRANK A Talk by Ryan Cooper Tuesday, March 13th 7:00 PM Ryan Cooper had the rare privilege of corresponding with and becoming friends with Otto Frank, father of Anne Frank. After Anne’s diary became famous, Otto Frank received thousands of letters from all over the world, mostly from young people. He answered every one. He encouraged them to work for mankind and in that way keep alive his daughter’s memory and her ideals which had so inspired them. Through this friendship Ryan was inspired to share stories about and memorabilia from the Frank family, including letters, photographs and artifacts. ANDREW CARNEGIE A DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE BY RICHARD CLARK Monday, April 9th 7:00 PM Richard Clark portrayed the dynamic Clarence Darrow in a riveting performance at the Library last year. This April, in celebration of National Library Week, Mr. Clark will give us an intimate glimpse into this dynamic businessman and philanthropist who gave away most of his riches to fund the establishment of many libraries, schools, and universities in the United States and worldwide. Admission to this program is free.

ARTHUR MILLER’S LETTERS A Talk by Federico Muchnik Tuesday, May 8th 7:00 PM When Arthur Miller passed away in 2005, the Muchnik family rediscovered a series of letters between the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and his longtime friend and Spanish language publisher, Jacobo Muchnik. The letters revealed intimate details of Miller's life, from his successes and failures as a playwright to his life with Marilyn Monroe. Jacobo Muchnik has passed away and these letters are now in the care of his family. Federico, Jacobo’s grandson, will share memories and letters which give a personal look at a very public man.

Literature in Letters Four Centuries of the Epistolary Novel

Join the Sturgis Library’s 2007 Reading and Discussion Group This year’s theme is the epistolary novel — or, novels in letters. It was one of the earliest forms of novel to be developed and remained one of the most popular into the 19th century. This literary form allows us a glimpse into the minds of many characters through their personal observations. While they often bring a sense of greater realism to a novel, letters can also beguile and bewitch. Is the narrator telling the “truth?” Join us as we delve more deeply into these old and new classics, spanning four decades and including two Pulitzer Prize winners.
