PRESIDENT’S CORNER

A belated Happy New Year to all of you!

We should all be happy that this winter has been milderthan the last two winters at Forest Lake. By Christmasof last year our roads had already been plowed three

times! This year our maintenance crew is using thesand and salt spreader to keep our parking lot, hills andcurves free of ice. The one snowfall we did have thisyear was plowed in a timely and efficient manner by J.R.Welding who was awarded the contract by ArenacCounty Road Commission last fall.

In December Forest Lake experienced a power outagelasting approximately thirteen hours in near zero weather. The outage affected well over half of our communityincluding the Clubhouse and Office. A large tree downedpower lines in an area that made it very difficult forConsumers Power to repair it promptly. Most everyonelost heat, water and telephone service. Several resi-dents were seeking shelter at homes with power andwater. After considering the effect this had on so manypeople, the Board of Directors decided to create a “SafeHouse” at the Clubhouse. This will require reservepower that would be created by a large portable genera-tor. It will also require an electrician to modify our powerpanels and run electrical lines to our pump house. Thissafe house could be used in any time of emergencysuch as power outages, tornados or any such type ofdisaster.

HOUSE FIRE

December Dinner Club was in full swing with over 100residents in attendance when sirens were heard out-side of the Clubhouse. Fire engines raced down Bob-cat Trail to find the Cunningham home totally engulfed

in flames. The house was already a total loss, but theAlger Fire Dept spent the next 3 hours keeping the firefrom spreading to nearby homes. Fortunately the homewas unoccupied when the fire occurred and the recentsnowfall kept cinders from igniting the surrounding

woods and homes. The Fire Marshal said that the firewas not caused by arson and probably had been smol-dering for days. A cause for this major fire has not beenestablished. The local Fire Chief offered some advice toall homeowners regarding house fires. Furnaces needto be inspected by licensed heating contractors on aregular basis. Gas hot water heaters also need to beinspected. Overloaded electrical circuits cause manyhouse fires. The overloading of extension cords isdangerous. Have your fireplace chimneys swept on aregular basis. The use of electric space heaters must beconstantly monitored. When leaving your home forseveral days or more you must unplug toasters, coffeepots anything that can cause an electrical short. Makesure you turn off the circuit breakers for your water pumpand electric hot water heaters. ABOVE ALL, make sureyour homeowners’ insurance policies are up to date onvalues and contents.

VOLUNTEER NEEDEDLas Vegas Night (in July) will nottake place this year if there is no

GARDEN CLUB NEWS

Last year we all worked hard to keep Forest Lake parksand gardens looking good despite the voracious appe-tite of the deer. No sooner would flowers bloom only tobecome an evening meal for our deer herd. There wasalso major work on the bathhouse at Sand Hill CranePark that hindered our gardening efforts. The work atthe Clubhouse putting in new power lines and at theOffice pouring a sidewalk also dampened our garden-ing attempts. All this was out of our control, but we havethis year to try again and we will!

The bake sales went well and we have saved up enoughmoney to put in some trees around the playgroundequipment in the spring at Sand Hill Crane Park. Hope-fully the trees will provide much needed shade at thatplayground.

A BIG FAT THANK YOU

The following is an email that FLPOA received onNovember 15, 2009. Subject: “A Big Fat Thank You…”

Dear Security Team,

I have been remiss in not having written sooner, how-ever, I was waiting for the opportunity to thank Elaine inperson, which finally happened today. My name is Leslie and I reside on Bear Cub Trail. Onthis past August 15 I experienced a life-threateningpulmonary/cardiac event. Had Security (Elaine) notbeen on Bear Cub when this happened, there is a goodchance I would not be here today. In case any residentsever question the dedication of our Security team,

please let me assure you that their recent training andcertification in “oxygen rescue” saved my life.

I cannot thank Elaine enough. Her fast response savedmy life. No fanfare is ever made of such events…wellI want to change this! Kudos to Elaine….and kudos tothe entire team for constantly being there for all of us.With undying gratitude (literally),

Leslie Ross

SECURITY REPORT

The Forest Lake Property Owners’ Association wouldlike to take this opportunity to thank Jack Gardner for hisyears of service working for our Security Staff. Jack hasbeen instrumental in process changes within our Staff.Best wishes go to Jack and family in his retirement!

During the first snow last month Security responded toa number of calls from our residents ranging fromvehicles in the ditches to downed power lines. Sincethat time we have equipped the Security vehicle with“Do not cross” yellow tape and a thirty-foot tow strap.New snow tires have also been put on the vehicle.

Every year Security must be trained in the administra-tion of CPR, Defibrillation, Oxygen and Epinephrine. Inthe past we hired Red Cross to teach these classes ata cost of approximately $100 per student. We con-tacted Red Cross to investigate training our own in-structor for these classes. For approximately $400 weare now training one of our Security personnel to teachthese classes in house thus saving hundreds of dollarsannually.

Following the house fire on Bobcat Trail in December,Security is now equipped with a pager that receives 911fire calls for Moffatt Township. This will allow us to befirst on the scene when the fire department is notified ofan emergency. We spoke with our Fire Chief as to whatour functions would be in an emergency situation.

In reference to the article in the President’s Cornerabout the Safe House, one of our residents, Paul Fry,wanted to donate funds towards the generator systemto be purchased. Paul’s donation is in gratitude for thehelp Security provided when he was in very ill health. I

would like to personally thank him for his generousdonation and am happy that we could be of assistancein his time of need.
