Welcome to the Winter 2010-2011 issue of Semex’s Beef Balance!

At Semex, we take pride in our ability to provide breeders with balanced, efficient and profitable genetics. We credit this to our time-tested Balanced Breeding Philosophy. This philosophy places additional emphasis on selecting sires based on not just a single trait, but rather on a balance of traits including structural soundness, functionality, efficiency, muscle, performance and maternal strength. By following this guiding philosophy, Semex has been able to supply its customers with only the highest quality genetics, ensuring our customers are both successful and profitable.

In this issue of Semex’s Beef Balance we’re covering: new 2011 Spring EPDs; breeder feedback on Semex sired progeny; and, looking at the power of balanced genetics within the breeds.

Additionally, we’re featuring:

• A Black Angus sire that showcases one of the strongest and best-balanced EPD spreads in the breed

• Two incredible Red Angus sires that are making waves in the breed and are gaining incredible popularity for their strength and balance

• The newest addition to our Simmental line-up

• Taking a look at the strength of balanced genetics in the show ring and in the global market

• SEMEXX™, gender sorted beef semen

We hope you enjoy our Winter issue and we look forward to working with you in 2011!

Breeders often ask what is Balanced Breeding and how does it benefit me? Semex has long stood by its proven Balanced Breeding Philosophy, which bases genetic selection on a combination of several traits including phenotype, structural soundness, performance, maternal strength and efficiency. By only selecting balanced genetics for our own breeding program, Semex ensures that our customers get the highest quality genetics without sacrifice.

S A V Camaro 9272 is a prime example of the Semex Balanced Breeding Philosophy at its best. Camaro was a standout Final Answer son at the 2010 Schaff Angus Valley Sale, where he was he was admired for his natural muscle expression, exceptional depth and structural soundness.

Camaro has gone on to be one of the breed’s most balanced sires with an incredible 0.7 BW EPD to 109 YW EPD spread. He also ranks at the top of the breed for practically every EPD including CED, BW, WW, YW, SC, CEM and MILK.

Camaro’s pedigree combines the proven performance and calving ease predictability of Final Answer with the maternal strength of his Peacemaker dam, who produced another phenomenal bull calf in 2010. S A V First Class 0207, a maternal brother to Camaro, was the chart topping bull calf at this year’s Schaff Angus Valley sale, selling two-thirds semen interest with no possession for $265,000.

Due to Camaro’s exceptional balance, he has the unique ability to sire the next generation of highly maternal replacement heifers while also producing performance topping bull calves.

Semex is extremely excited to announce the newest addition to its Red Angus line-up, Red Lazy MC Honky Tonk 11X. At just over a year old, Honky Tonk is the talk of the industry, delivering a well-known pedigree with show ring credibility.

In 2010, he was shown next to his dam when she was named Grand Champion Female at the 2010 Canadian National Show. He was also shown at the 2010 FarmFair International Junior All Breeds Show, where he was named the Bull Calf Champion and was admired by breeders for his unparalleled thickness. “He is probably one of the thickest Red Angus sires the industry has ever seen!” stated Semex Alliance Beef Program Manager, Myles Immerkar. This thickness, combined with his unique outcross pedigree, sound

structure, incredible depth, balanced numbers and eye appeal, ensure Honky Tonk will make an impression in 2011.

Honky Tonk’s sire, Red Lazy MC Cowboy Cut 26U, was the Reserve Champion Bull at the 2010 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver, Colorado, and is now a herd sire at Lazy MC Angus. Cowboy Cut has proven himself to sire incredibly sound and soft-made progeny, with his daughters being unbelievably feminine and stylish. Honky Tonk’s dam, RED YY Patty 701T, is an amazing female that is phenotycially correct, moderately framed with a perfect udder and a great set of feet and legs. Adding to his appeal, Honky Tonk is the first Red Lazy MC Cowboy Cut 26U son on the market.

In January 2011 Semex Beef teamed up with Lazy MC Angus and A-1 Land & Cattle to offer an incredibly unique opportunity at the NWSS Reds On Ice Sale in Denver, offering US semen rights for Red Lazy MC Honky Tonk 11X as Lot #1 in the sale. Honky Tonk was on display in the yards the week leading up to the sale, where he was rightfully admired for his incredible thickness and generated a lot of attention from breeders. This semen package ended up being one of the sale’s highest selling lots, at $10,000 to Alberta’s Roy Angus.

Kazakhstan, officially the Republic of Kazakhstan, is a transcontinental country located in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Ranked at the ninth largest country in the world, Kazakhstan became an independent country when the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. During this time however the country sadly saw a great decline in its cattle population going from approx. 38 million head in 1994 to a mere 2 million head in 2011. This has resulted in up to 70% of their meat now having to be imported.

In order to improve the countries agricultural sector, the government has now placed funding in place to see improvements to the Kazakhstan beef industry, both through improved management and improved genetics. Over the past year the country has imported several loads of live cattle as well as invested in the importation of semen, with over 35,000 doses being shipped in 2010. Sires selected for use in Kazakhstan include Circle-D 32P Speed 59S, Elm-Lodge Upper Cut 20U, Glenlees CL 151L Rigid 23P,

McCoy Powerhouse 77P and McCoy 55M Absolute 49S. This was based on each sire’s ability to provide proven balance genetics that combine performance, maternal strength, easy fleshing, efficient, and polled genetics.

Kazakhstan has also invested in assistance to help improve herd management. In the past cattle have been roaming and feeding off the land, with no fencing and very little herd management, as most herds do not castrate or dehorn. With the importation of cattle and improved genetics to the country, North American producers have partnered with Kazakhstan in order to teach them proper herd management including herd health, AI breeding, feedlot nutrition and breed development. Though this will be a long term project, Kazakhstan is well underway to improving their beef industry and we look forward to continuing to support them in their continued growth and improvement.

CANADA IS HOME TO SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP HEREFORD GENETICS. BALANCED BREEDING PROGRAMS PROVIDE INTERNATIONAL BREEDERS WITH PROVEN PERFORMANCE, GROWTH, EFFICIENCY AND MATERNAL STRENGTH COMBINED WITH THE ADDED ADVANTAGE OF POLLED PEDIGREES. SO IT WAS NO SURPRISE WHEN BREEDERS IN KAZAKHSTAN WERE LOOKING TO IMPROVE THEIR CURRENT BREEDING PROGRAMS THAT THEY TURNED TO THE STRENGTH OF CANADIAN HEREFORD GENETICS.

Breeders from across Canada gathered in Regina, Saskatchewan at the end of November 2010 for the 40th Anniversary of the Canadian Western Agribition. The Agribition is one of Canada’s largest and most prestigious beef cattle shows, hosting over 12 purebred shows including seven national shows, as well as a market steer and prospect show.

After an incredible week of shows and sales, the entire event was capped off Saturday, November 27, with the legendary RBC Supreme Beef Challenge.

The show ring held more the 40 of the country’s top females, but in the end the honours of Supreme Female was awarded to SVY Starstruck 559R. This five-year-old SVY Freedom daughter was shown with her Invincible heifer calf at side.

The duo placed extremely well in 2010, also capturing the titles of Agribition Grand Champion Charolais Female and Grand Champion Female at the Lloydminister Stockade Round-Up.

Semex’s SVY Freedom PLD 307N proves yet again that his balance of calving ease, maternal strength, style, performance and eye appeal is what produces show champions and herd founding females! Like her sire, Starstruck is a true testament to balanced genetics being the key to success both on the farm and in the show ring. *SVY Freedom PLD 307N is only available through Semex internationally; unfortunately he is not available in Canada or the USA.

Balanced Breeding Takes Top Honours

“The first of our Roundup calves have started to arrive and are already showing a lot of future.

They have some bone, are nice headed, with good

hair and look like they will really grow. We have had 2 calves born out of heifers

and 4 from older cows, all unassisted. We really

like this bull and look forward to the rest of his

calves coming.”Darwin Rosso, Rosso Charolais

The success of a herd’s breeding program can be greatly affected by numerous factors. However, none has a greater impact than the herd’s genetic selection. This is why Semex places such a large emphasis on its own sire selection. We work hard to ensure our sires meet our proven Balanced Breeding Philosophy, supplying only the best quality genetics to our customers.

Posthaven Polled Urban Cowboy is a great example of a sire that meets Semex’s rigorous selection criteria. He has been referred to as perhaps one of the breed’s most phenotypically correct bulls. This is due to his exceptional muscle expression, incredible depth, notable thickness, structural soundness and overall balance. All this, combined with his power-packed pedigree and the fact that he is a homo polled fullblood, make Urban Cowboy a unique, balanced and powerful sire package.

Semex is proud to announce that Urban Cowboy is now available in both conventional and as a SEMEXX™ gender sorted sire. Semex breeders now have more control over their herd’s genetic future. Whether it be planning the next generation of powerful replacement females or producing the future performance leading sires, the decision is now in your hands thanks to Semex’s new line-up of high quality SEMEXX™ beef semen products.

The Power of Balanced Breeding

“We received our first two calves sired by Urban Cowboy. The first was an 85 lbs bull calf

off one of our mature polled cows and the second was a 75 lbs heifer off a first calf homo polled heifer. The calves are doing well and look great! ”
