Rick Lindenberger’s Script OhioBy Emily Anderson (Class of 2014)

On November 16th, the tradition of Script Ohio was performed right here in Fremont! Little clapping hands were the sym-bols and marching feet were the drums. The band members were kindergartners through third graders from our own Sacred Heart campus. The performance was under the direction of Mr. Rick Lindenberger, the physi-cal education teacher at Sacred Heart. I had the chance to speak with “Mr. L,” (as his students call him), at this memorable event.

Q: How did Script Ohio start at Ohio State and when did you start it at BHCS? A: The Michigan marching band first per-formed Script Ohio in 1932. The Ohio State band director at that time thought it was a neat performance. In 1936, OSU performed it for the very first time. Script Ohio’s 75th Anniver-sary is this year.

Dear Alumni, Friends, and Families of Catholic Education,

On behalf of each PreK-12th grade student who walks through our doors each day, I say “thank you” for your support and encouragement this year. We have started off well and have many exciting things going on in our school hallways and in our church pews. The relationship between the “new” school system and the parishes must continue to grow to support the work that we have been called to do. We must continue to offer quality educational opportunities and dem-onstrate our Catholic identity in all we do. We also must ensure that every child who enters our school system has the opportunity to complete their education and graduate from our Catholic high school; SJCC. To support anything less would be contradictory to the mission of the parishes and the schools. Please understand that we have not taken away the identity of the individual schools. They are still the Sacred Heart Campus, the St. Joseph Campus and the SJCC Campus. The school-wide system is BHCS. Each school relies on the other in order to provide a compre-hensive and seamless educational program. We are making progress.

Part of our progress this year has been the hiring of a school-wide business manager. Mr. Bob Dulaney started working for BHCS last year as a financial consultant to review the many books, accounts, and overall issues of the consolidated system. He has developed a financial information structure that is more efficient than the original “merged” system that involved the sharing of Business Manager duties across our three Parishes. Mr. Dulaney meets with the BHCS Finance Committee and the combined Finance Councils of all three parishes. These are all steps in the right direction. We have submitted a bal-anced budget to the Toledo Diocese and are working to pay down loans that were taken. The financial information included in this edition of the Voice has been shared with the BHCS Finance Committee, the BHCS Governing Board, and the parish community. Now we share it with all of you.

Again, we “respect” the support you have given to the past stand-alone school structure. We “celebrate” your current and renewed support for our children and staff today. We pray for blessings for you and your family as we “build” the future of the BHCS system for years to come. Thank you to those who have already given to the Annual Fund. I invite the Class of ‘81 to lead the way and hope that every graduated class can surpass their past generosity.

Together, with God’s grace, we will fill our pews, our desks, and our children’s hearts with the love and spirit of the greatest gift of all; Jesus Christ.

The SJCC Alumni and Friends Alumni Associa-tion are proud to announce the 2012 Heritage Award Recipients. Since 1998, this award has been pre-

sented to thirty-four individuals and two couples. Richard Faist ’60, Dr. Robert Swint ’63, and Bill Barbour ’74 are join-ing this prestigious community. They each exemplify the qualifications neces-sary for induction. They have touched the lives of those around them through their dedication and involvement in the communities in which they live. They have gone above and beyond a level of giving with their time and talents and have enriched many different types of people and organizations. The induc-tion ceremony will be held May 5 at 5:15pm in the SJCC cafeteria. Tickets will be available March 1.

Richard Faist gradu-ated from St. Joseph High School in 1960. He married Kath-leen (Widman) ’62 in 1966 and they reside in Sylvania, OH. They have 5 children and 12 grandchildren.

Faist earned his Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Accounting from the University of Detroit in 1964. He began his career with KPMG Peat Marwich in 1964, was elected partner in 1974, and named the managing partner of the Toledo office in 1982. He retired in July 2010 after serv-ing as Managing partner of the Toledo office of Clifton Gunderson LLP. He has dedicated much of his time to very worthy causes. He current-ly serves on numerous Boards of Trust-ees: Notre Dame Educational Foun-dation, St. John’s Jesuit High School, COMPASS, AAA Northwest Ohio, and the Central City Ministries of Toledo. He is the Chair of the Finance Commit-tee at both St. John’s Jesuit and COM-PASS. He also sits on the Finance Com-mittee of the Toledo Catholic Diocese, the United Way of Greater Toledo, and St. Joseph Church in Sylvania. He has previously served on the Boards of Trustees for The United Way of Greater Toledo, Servant Leadership Center, St. Vincent Medical Center Foundation, and Lourdes College. Mr. Faist has been recognized as the Clifton Gunderson Founders’

Greg Drown, a 1978 SJCC graduate, has zeroed in on the best mind-set for overcoming obstacles in life. Drown reflects on his challenge, “As my multiple sclerosis became evident and progressed, I have had to use goal setting to get me through difficulties to handle this disease. Having a positive attitude and a positive outlook in life is just as important as setting goals,” he says. I had the opportunity to meet and interview Drown, who has faced an obstacle throughout his life, but he has yet to let that stop him from reaching his goals. He is diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease of the central nervous system. Drown states, “my nervous system wiring is that of a frayed wire and the frayed wiring interrupts the brain signals.” This has caused him to be in a wheelchair When I met him I did not see the wheel-chair but rather saw someone full of life. Drown has not let this disease get between him and his goals. At age eleven before MS impacted his life, his father got him involved in competi-tive shooting. Some of his accomplishments include: being a part of three Big

Ten Championship teams, winning two individual Big Ten Championship titles, and winning numerous State and Regional Championships. His most prestigious award, he says, was win-ning the National Championship two years ago. Drown advises that to overcome obstacles, a person must be passionate about something in his/her life. A person must be enthusiastic everyday de-spite the “ups and downs” life brings. Drown feels that with passion, goal setting, and a good self-esteem a person will be successful. He reflects, “be-side my passion for competitive shooting, nothing would mean more to me than someone that can relate to my story and turn his/her life around. I am a believer and will continue thinking positively to defeat this disease. I en-courage others to do it with the same determination as myself.” Drown is inspired by the quote, “True strength is keeping everything together when everyone expects you to fall apart.” Drown’s life, his advice, and philosophy are inspirational.

Alumni & Friends Heritage AwardAward in 1997, the United Way Spirit of Caring, in 2007, and the Toledo Jeffer-son Awards in 2010. He is a member of St. Joseph Church in Sylvania, Legatus Genesis Chapter, the Rotary Club of Toledo, In-verness Club, and The Toledo Club.

Robert Swint is a 1963 graduate of St. Joseph High School. He has been mar-ried to RuthAnn for 40 years and they live in Fort Wayne, IN. They have three sons and three grandchildren.

Swint is presi-dent and founder of Lutheran Medical Group, formerly known as The Heart Center Medical Group. After receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Detroit, Dr. Swint earned a medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, where he was elected president of his medical class. He completed an internal medi-cine internship at Northwestern Univer-sity, Evanston Hospital, and a residency at the Mayo Clinic. His strong Christian influence of healing the sick and helping the indigent also guided him to estab-lish a free clinic in 1969 in Maywood, IL. This is still in existence today and adheres to the original intention of serving low income families in western Chicago. Since 1978 he has volunteered at Matthew 25, a free clinic providing cardiology and hypertension services to Fort Wayne residents. Dr. Swint served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy from 1972 to 1974, then completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Cen-ter in Ann Arbor. Dr. Swint, who is board certi-fied in internal medicine and cardiovas-cular disease, is a fellow in the American College of Cardiology and is a member of the college’s Council of Geriatric Cardiology and the American Heart As-sociation’s Council of Clinical Cardiol-ogy. He is a clinical associate professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Fort Wayne Center for Medical Education. Dr. Swint is past president of the Fort Wayne Medical So-ciety an is a co-founder of the Northeast Indiana Wellness Council. He serves as the medical director of LMG’s research division, the Northern Indiana Research Alliance (NIRA), and was the recipient

I started my teaching career in the Toledo Catholic Schools in 2002. According to the teacher requirement, I needed a dance and rhythmic activity. I decided to do marching in block Ohio formation. In 2006, at St. Ann’s, forty-five students were involved, kin-dergartners, first, and second graders, so last year was the first at Sacred Heart campus and I included the third graders. There were 167 students marching, and I decided to do it outdoors at Don Paul Stadium. A third grade student receives the honor of dotting the I. This lucky student, Mara Brown, was chosen by a lottery.

Q: How many hours does it take to have the students learn Script Ohio? A: Last year there were a lot of new students due to the consolidation. We started practicing at the end of September, and it took about twenty hours. This year it was about ten hours. The actual performance only lasts four minutes. Both years, I included practices during gym class. Kindergarten students march among the older students to help them learn the routine.

Q: You received a letter from the OSU president about your Script Ohio performance. What did the letter state? A: One of the teachers at Sacred Heart sent a letter to the president of Ohio State explaining how the Sacred Heart campus was planning to perform Script Ohio. The Ohio State president congratulated our effort and he hoped it went well.

Q: How long have you been a teacher? A: This is my tenth year teaching in Catholic Schools. My first year, I taught at St. Agnes School in Toledo. I still teach in Toledo and continue to teach in the BHCS system. I taught at St. Ann’s until the consolidation. Now I am the physical education teacher at Sacred Heart campus.

Next year in November, the fans will be able to again experience another outstanding performance from BHCS “little band mem-bers” with the help of Mr. L!

of the 2008 Physician Healthcare Hero Award presented by The Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly. He was also inducted in the Ohio Boys State Hall of Fame in 2005.

Bill Barbour gradu-ated from St. Joseph in 1974. He resides in Fremont with his wife, Sue (Moyer) ’74. They are the par-ents of Sara, Jacob, ‘03, and Eric ‘08. He graduated from Northwestern Uni-versity with a degree

in elementary education and is a 5th grade teacher at Stamm Elementary. Bill is a proud and active mem-ber of Sacred Heart Church. He has been a lector and communion distribu-tor, as well as a member of the Sacred Heart Mens Association and 200 Club. He is a past president of the Sacred Heart Parish Council and has donated many hours painting the rectory & SHARE Center and assisting with the outside maintenance (landscaping, lawn mowing, tree cutting). He has also co-chaired the pancake breakfast and volunteered his time with the spaghetti dinner and annual summer festival. He is a former member of the team who visited Countryside Home for Sunday Mass. Bill served on the first Catholic Schools Auction Committee as a repre-sentative of Sacred Heart Parish and has served as the Master of Ceremo-nies. He is the “Voice of the Streaks” at the home football games. He is a member of the paint crew at SJCC and a member of the SJCC Athletic Boosters Club. He also was a member of the So-ciety of St. Bernards. He has coached flag football for Sacred Heart School and both baseball and softball for the Fremont Recreation Department. He is Volunteer Wish Granter for The Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bill and his wife created the Sara Barbour Scholarship Fund which provides a scholarship for incoming 8th grade students (two students from our current 8th grade class who will be at-tending SJCC) and also honors a gradu-ating senior. He has also donated his time working the Sara Barbour Memo-rial Golf Tournament which is run by his children Jacob and Eric. He has also participated as a member of the Sacred Heart Relay for Life Team.

Respect the Past, Celebrate the Present, Build the Future

As we reflect on our 2011-2012 school motto: Respect the Past, Celebrate the Present, Build the Future, an important part of our past is the “Voice”. In order to properly honor the traditions we hold so dear, we will be researching other historical icons of our school in future editions of the Voice. The Voice has had many forms throughout our history-a newspaper, a yearbook, and now the Alumni Magazine. In October, 1929, the Voice made its debut! The slogan on the initial issue was “Make Your Voice Heard”. It is quite fitting the goal of the Voice “The per-manent, official organ of the school, a true chronicler of its achievements” is still our driving force today. The Voice office consisted of four Editors: Editor-in-Chief (Rita Gfell), Manag-

ing (Don Daubel-future editor of the Fremont News-Messenger and the Port Clinton News-Herald), Advertising (Caroline Miller), and Sports (Ambrose Gabel-even though there were only two sports at the time). Prices were: $1.00 per year or $.10 per issue. The May issue of each Voice was dedicated as the “commencement issue”. Senior Portraits, as well as each graduate’s accomplishments while at St. Joseph High School, were printed. Articles of importance for the first few issues included a girls tennis article (they also played volleyball and basketball), the death of a family pony for the Fey family, and a traffic light installation at the Croghan and Wood streets intersec-tion.

Looking through the advertisements also brought quite a shock..only one re-mains in business today: H.C. Grund Drug Co. Common themes among the adver-tisers were clothiers, grocers, home appliances stores, and automobile repair & gas stations. GolfThe golf team had high expectations for the season. They accom-plished their goals of winning the MAL title and sending the entire team to the State Tournament! Connor Dudley, a junior and three time state qualifier, led the team throughout the season and placed 13th individually at State. Seniors Aaron Staib, Joe Steinle, and Tom Spader will be greatly missed after this amazing year.

Cross CountryThe boys’ and girls’ cross country teams began the year with a new head coach, Sonny Workman. Both teams were packed with se-niors who worked hard to improve their times throughout the sea-son. Sarah Franks, a sophomore, led the girls team and was a strong finisher in most meets. Seniors Parker Keating, Zach Zavela, Scott Snodgrass, Alex Partyka, and Ben Ysasi, along with Erica Adams, Jackie Wasson, Katie Stierwalt, and Paige Kleinschmit will leave many shoes to fill in the fall.

VolleyballStarting off the season with new coach, Lindsay Hill, the volleyball players had to adapt and step up. Many injuries faced the team, and freshmen, including Be Reardon and Josie Weickert, were forced to play varsity. The girls came together, and seniors Christine Wise, Abby Swint, Taylor Flick, and Gabriella Cullen helped the team to a 10-22 record. A strong group of juniors will be returning next year, and a good season promises to follow.

FootballThe football team knew they had a tough road ahead after losing most of the senior starters from last year and finished the season with a re-cord of 4-6. The team played well throughout the season but still had several disappointing losses. While seniors Cory Bowes, Justin Distel, Tivo Ysasi, Zach Molyet, and Brandon Steinberger finished their ca-reers, key players Luke Stierwalt, Zack Yeckley, Jordan Sessler, Alex Veleba, Corey Durbin, and Mitchell Gonya are returning next season with a lot of potential and high hopes.

TennisLosing eight seniors to graduation led to a difficult start for the ladies tennis team. They persevered and with a positive attitude accepted the challenge. The team gained many new members, but Varsity ex-perience was still lacking. Emily Ronski, the lone senior on the team, was the only player with varsity experience. The team finished with a record of 2-11, but has great potential for next season.

CheerleadingWith new coach, Sue Amidon, the cheerleaders were off to a great start to a successful season. Stephanie Alonzo and Nikki McLaughlin were the seniors on the squad, and their leadership was a good exam-ple to the underclassmen. The girls worked hard throughout the sum-mer to prepare themselves for an exceptional season of cheering on the football team. Many girls will be returning next season with talent, new ideas, and the promise of another great year.

Bob Smith is the winningest football coach in St. Joseph Central Catholic High School history. Smith went 183-68-10 as the Crimson Streaks’ head coach from 1946-1973. During that time, the Streaks won 12 Sandusky Bay Conference titles and as-sembled four undefeated seasons, includ-ing 27 straight wins from 1962 to 1964. While he was at St. Joseph, he was named

the Ohio High School Athletic Association coach of the year in 1960, and athletic director of the year in 1974. But to remem-ber Smith, who died at the age of 92, strictly by his coaching achievements is to do him a disservice, said many of the men who played for him and coached with him. “He’s a great ex-ample of what men should want to grow up and be like as a parent, husband, coach, mentor, and grandfather,” said To-ledo Central Catholic coach Greg Dempsey. “He was a great mentor for me personally.” After leaving St. Joseph, Smith went to Toledo Cen-tral Catholic in 1976, where he served as an athletic director and football coach. Smith graduated from Norwalk St. Paul High School, and is in the respective halls of fame of Toledo Central Catholic, Norwalk St. Paul and was a charter member of the SJCC Hall of Fame in 1986. He is also a member of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame. Smith had his greatest success on the football field, but he also coached basketball and baseball for the Crimson Streaks. The first year for the new consolidated Bishop Hoffman Catholic School ended with a Net Gain of $496,308 thanks to many donations through out the year. Two donations late in the year totaling $374,274 contributed greatly to the gain and some expenses in July and August were paid by the parishes. The Net Gain also allowed the school to carry forward approximately $320,000 in cash to start the 2011-2012 school year. The entire Net Gain of $496,308 was not carried forward because approximately $176,000 of the prepaid tuition for the 2010-2011 school year was used to pay expenses for the prior school year. During the planning process for the 2012-2013 school year the Governing Board will approve expenditures as recommended by the BHCS Administration and as allocated per the BHCS strategic planning process. There are some operating issues still to be determined such as how facilities are maintained between the parishes and school. The investments balance consists of $81,962 for Faculty/Staff and $686,198 for Capital Campaign Scholarships. The Loans & Notes Payable consist of Faculty/Staff Endowment Loans totaling $510,000 plus a Diocese Loan for $351,162.

three in football. “He was instrumental in helping me develop as an athlete as well as socially and spiritually,” said Yeager, a 1970 graduate and a 1994 inductee into the SJCC Hall of Fame. All of Smith’s players talked about his devotion to the rosary, having the team pray it on the bus to and from road games. He would also take the team to Saturday morning Mass, in addition to the regular weekly Mass on Sunday and the daily Masses they would attend during the school year. “He was a very devout man,” said Rick Barbour, a 1968 St. Joseph graduate who played for Smith and later became one of his assistant coaches in Fremont. Smith returned to SJCC in 2009, wearing his trade-mark hat and booster jacket, when the football seniors of 1965 were inducted as a group. Among the inductees was Mike Beier, who said that as a coach, Smith stressed funda-mentals, and constant repetition of them in practice. “We would drill and drill and drill,” he said. “We would just run our plays until we wanted to throw up, but we never made a mistake running those plays.” Gary Geller, a 1968 St. Joseph graduate now serving as athletic director at his alma mater, said that Smith concen-trated on the little extras, be it conditioning, preparation, prayers or discipline. “He had a love for kids, and that’s why he stuck around,” Geller said. “Kids keep you young. They have young ideas and they keep you alive, on your toes and thinking.”

After the first five months into the school year we are running above Plan in our Operating Gain with state funds received for Mandated Services and Preschool receipts both above Plan. The Net Gain has been im-pacted by the net gain for the cookie dough fundraiser. After a review of the remaining seven months we feel strong that our school year will end in the black. There were some large donations late last year allowing us cash carried forward. The Governing Board will ap-prove expenditures as recommended by the BHCS Ad-ministration and as allocated per the BHCS strategic planning process which will include how excess cash should be utilized.
