HEALTHY CHOICES HEALTHY KIDS Prescribe the Y In 2008, the YMCA of Greater Nashua partnered with local physicians to support adolescents with health lifestyle behaviors. This launched the start of Prescribe the Y. Part of the Y’s commitment to strengthening the community through healthy living, the program offers children a safe, supportive environment to participate in both physical and social activities focused on nutrition education geared towards the whole family! HOW IT WORKS:

• Free 12 week program, meets twice per week• Physician referral • Children work with a registered dietitian who will simplify

healthy eating and help children explore options that are as appealing as they are nutritious

• Our certified personal trainer creates a noncompetitive environment where children can experience the fun of physical activity while developing team-building skills

• Family sessions• Tons of healthy fun!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT HEALTHY LIVING Swim LessonsImagine watching your child swim for the first time all by himself. The joy of seeing that accomplishment and confidence is unmatched. In our swim lessons, we’re not just teaching life-saving skills- we’re building confidence.

Y lessons are unique due to their focus on preparing the swimmer for all aspects of the water experience and life by teaching skills in these five focus areas:

• Personal Safety- Activities that help increase awareness of personal safety issues for both child and parent

• Personal Growth- Activities that help child and parent grow in spirit, mind, and body, including character development

• Stroke Development- Activities that improve swimming abilities so children can move in the water safely

• Water Sports and Games- Activities to develop an appreciation of aquatic activities for a lifetime of fun in the water, including age-appropriate games and songs

• Rescue- Activities that build awareness of how to help others in aquatic emergencies

Our Approach We use a student centered learning style to keep children actively involved in their progression. When students are allowed to figure out what to do on their own, they are actively and creatively participating in their learning. As a result they tend to remember what they learn better and longer.

Participants are placed in a level based on age and ability to help meet the developmental needs of each swimmer. Beginner swim-mers will wear an IFD (instructional flotation device) to help them swim in the correct body position and improve their arm and leg motions while being able to remain afloat.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SWIM LESSONS PARENT TIPS

• Register for the correct level! Use the program descriptions in this guide, or give us a call. We can talk about your child’s readiness for a particular level OR schedule a free assessment. There is a $10 Transfer fee for children registered for the wrong level.

• Get ready! Children with shoulder length hair or longer must tie it back. Swim caps and goggles are strongly encouraged for Ray or Guppy levels and higher.

• Don’t forget to bring your towel to the pool deck!• Meet your instructor on the pool deck in the designated

drop off zone. Note: your instructor may be in the pool finishing a class.

• If you choose to leave the pool deck during lessons, please return 5 minutes prior to the end of class for pick up. Please note: you must remain in the building for the duration of class!

Help us keep our pool clean• Please remove your street shoes- they carry

dirt, salt and other germs onto the pool deck. • Take a shower- this helps keep our water fresh

and balanced!• Stay home- if your child has not been feeling

well in the last 24 hours, please stay home! Aquatics staff may ask your child to leave if they are visibly ill. A system credit may be issued for absence for medical reasons, just provide a doctor’s note.

• Swim diapers are required for children not fully potty trained.

Research shows that participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent among children aged one to four years. (Source: Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine 2009)

HEALTHY LIVING Adult Programs (16+)YMCA’s DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM1 in 3 adults in the US is at risk for developing Type 2 diabetes, that’s 86 million people, but only 10% know they are at risk.

The Y believes that all people should be able to live life to its fullest, healthiest potential. In the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program a trained lifestyle coach will introduce topics in a supportive, small group environment and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity and behavior changes can benefit their health.

HOW IT WORKS: • To qualify; must be 18 years old, overweight > BMI 25,

diagnosed blood value, meet at risk qualification or diagnosed with prediabetes.

• The 12-month group-based program consists of 16 one-hour, weekly sessions, followed by monthly sessions led by a trained lifestyle coach who facilitates a small group of people with similar goals.

• Discuss topics such as healthy eating, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, problem solving, and much more.

• Support and motivation to maintain progress towards program goals with monthly maintenance sessions.

PROGRAM GOALS:• Lose 7% of your body weight• Gradually increase your physical activity to 150 minutes

per week.

You will do this by learning strategies for:Healthy Eating-Eating smaller portions, reducing fat in your diet and discovering healthier food options has been proven to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes1.

Increasing Physical Activity- Studies have repeatedly shown that moderate physical activity (walking, swimming, mowing the lawn) for as little as 30 minutes, five days a week can help improve your blood pressure, raise your good cholesterol and prevent blood flow problems.

Losing Weight-It has been shown that reducing your body weight by even a small amount (as little as 7%) can offer tremendous benefits for people at risk for diabetes.

Based on research funded by the National Institutes of Health, the program has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58%. The reduction was even greater, 71%, among adults aged 60 years or older.

Are You At Risk? Find out in 2 minutes by answering 7 simple questions on our website: http://www.nmymca.org/programs/ diabetes-prevention-program/
