Winter 2017

Enclosed in this newsletter is a flyer for PIZZA fundraiser on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Pizza Man Dan’s. Help us distribute the flyer to friends, neighbors, co-workers and family. Pizza Man Dan’s will donate a portion of its sales to the Friends of the Port Hueneme Library if you take a flyer or mention, Friends of the Port Hueneme Library, when you order on Feb. 22, 2017.

Students are busy working on their school assignments at the Rosenbluth Family Homework Center and at the computer stations. Special thanks to the Rosenbluth Family Foundation and especially to Murray Rosenbluth, former Mayor of Port Hueneme for their generous and on-going contributions. See photo and article inside this newsletter. Thank you very much for keeping the library a top priority!

Do you know how the Port Hueneme Library received its name? Did you know Ray D. Prueter when he served as Mayor for the City of Port Hueneme? Did you notice the display case in the foyer, with Ray D. Prueter’s awards for his service to his community? If you would like to share some of your memories of Ray D. Prueter, please send a short letter to the Friends mail box or an email message to [email protected] with “Library” in the subject area. I will include excerpts in a future newsletter. If you never met him in person, you will want to hear about his leadership and contributions to his country and community. You may also send a donation in his memory.

Additional donations from members of the Friends of the Port Hueneme Library during 2016 and membership renewals helped to accomplish a successful year. Plan to attend 2017 events and join the year-round fundraising to support the Ray D. Prueter Library. This is a great community resource that benefits everyone. Another generous $11,000.00 from Friends for the Ray D. Prueter Library to be used to purchase additional books and resource materials was made this month. Thank you to members for renewing early and contributing above and beyond to support the programs year-round at Ray D. Prueter Library. See you soon at the Library!

Librarian’s Report Submitted by, Bernadette McDowell, City Librarian

Once again, the Prueter Library scheduled its annual Star Wars Party at the same time as the Holiday Boutique sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Offering the events together has resulted in increased at-tendance at both events. Families shopped for holiday gifts and then joined the Star Wars Party for crafts, games, and other activities, in-cluding a fun Death Star maze and a rocket launching activity. About 200 people attended the two events.

On December 19, the Library hosted a celebration to honor the Prueter Library's benefactors—former Port Hueneme Mayor, Mur-ray Rosenbluth, and his son, Josh—who through the Rosenbluth Family Foundation provided funds for the Library to purchase a 3D printer and associated equipment and supplies. The 3D printer has been used in several demos and STEAM events to teach students (high school down to the upper elementary grades) how to use the printer, including programming it to "print" three-dimensional ob-jects. Speakers at the celebration included Ventura County Library Director Jackie Griffin, Councilmember Jon Sharkey, and Murray Rosenbluth. Afterward Antonio Apodaca, VCL’s Makerspace Li-brarian—with assistance from Children’s Librarian Sienna Sydlaske and her Teen Tech volunteers— showed the 3D printer in action.

Upcoming Classes, Workshop Events & Services

Many of the Library’s events and services are sponsored wholly or in part by the Friends of the Port Hueneme Library. The homework center is funded by the family of former Port Hueneme Mayor and City Councilmember Murray Ros-enbluth; as stated above, the Rosenbluth Family Foundation has also funded the purchase of a 3D printer and associat-ed equipment and supplies for use in the homework center and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) workshops. We extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of our supporters!

Online Resources

Access all online resources through the Ventura County Library’s website at www.vencolibrary.org. Click on the eLibrary tab to link to the library’s digital collection. A Ventura County Library card is required for access.

The online research tools highlighted below focus on health and wellness. It’s likely that some of us have made New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and exercise more; others of us may have ongoing health issues for which we want to keep abreast of new develop-ments in treatment options. All of the resources below provide information on some as-pect of health and all can be searched by subject.

Access Video on Demand: Streaming video from outstanding producers and broadcasters. After accessing the website, scroll down to Browse Subjects and select Health & Well-ness. At this point you can type a subject in the search box at the top of the page to re-trieve videos on your topic, or you can browse through the videos shown on the page (one interesting video is, “Cancer Glasses Focus on Tumors”).

Gale Virtual Reference Library: A database of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources. The easiest way to search this resource is to type your subject in the box at the top of the page; your topic will be searched in all of the ebooks in this collection. Another way to search is to scroll down the page, select Medicine, use the right arrow to scroll through the ebook titles, and select the ebook you wish to consult for information about your topic.

Health and Wellness Resource Center: Provides access to carefully compiled and trusted medical reference materials. Contains information on diseases and conditions, conven-tional medical treatments and alternative medicine, links to trusted websites and health assessments, and full-text articles from a range of consumer health and professional medi-cal journals. Materials contained in this Resource Center are intended for informational purposes only and are not a substitute for professional care.
