RUTLAND RECREATION &PARKS DEPARTMENT FACILITIES

Monsignor Connor Park and Giorgetti Park receivedthe biggest blow from the tropical storm Irene. Withthe damage to the ball fields at both parks we were

forced to look at alternative solutions to provide the fall sportsthis community expects. A huge thank you to the SummitFutbol Club for allowing us the use of their fields in RutlandTown, we are very fortunate to have that resource availableto the community and we appreciate their generous offer. Our maintenance department has done a magnificent job ofresponding to the emergency of repairing our fields alongwith continuing to provide the daily requirements of theprograms that have run basically without a hitch. We remainoptimistic that we will be able to use those facilities nextyear, but we will have to wait and see how they progress inthe spring.

Both the maintenance crew and the programming staffhave worked long hours to make sure that services andprograms haven’t been interrupted. I am very appreciative andproud of those efforts and I am pleased that this departmentresponded so professionally. One of the many benefits a goodrecreation and parks department provides a community is theopportunity to find outlets for enjoyment, relaxation and exerciseall year round and even during times of higher stress causedby a significant event like Irene. We hope you have come toappreciate and recognize the quality of life we try and provide.

The Recreation and Parks Department is still in a stateof limbo as of October 20th. Our offices remain at theGodnick Adult Center facility and we continue to offer asmuch programming as we can in that facility. We appreciateeveryone’s patience as we continue to navigate through thistransition period.

This winter we hope to relocate our maintenance divisionto the Courcelle Brothers Reserve Center when it becomesavailable. This facility will prove to be an ideal location forour maintenance operation. It will provide enough spacefor the proper storage of all of our equipment and supplies.Presently we rent space and have to store many pieces ofequipment outside and store supplies in several differentlocations. The Courcelle facility will allow us to consolidatethe entire maintenance operation into one locationestablishing a more efficient operation and providingopportunities to develop the space in order to better servicethe park infrastructure. We also anticipate relocating theadministrative offices and registration operation there andhope to provide a little programming as well.

Giorgetti ice rink is open for the season! We invite you tojoin us at the rink to go skating, play hockey or curling. Therink is open to the public many different times during eachweek with increased hours of operation during the schoolvacation weeks. Please visit our website at rutlandrec.com tofind out more about the opportunities available at the arena.

Thank you to the Rutland Herald and to the businessesthat choose to support our department by advertising in thispublication. Don’t forget to look for weekly updates everyWednesday in the Herald and visit our website at rutlandrec.com for news on ongoing and upcoming programs and events.

Let the winter fun begin,

Volunteer Coaches Needed!

Volunteer coaches are the backbone of therecreation department youth sports programs. We appreciate the efforts of all of our volunteersover the years. Unfortunately, it has becomeincreasingly difficult to find an adequatenumber of volunteers each season. Effectiveimmediately, if there are an insufficient numberof volunteers at the program start date, theprogram may be delayed, amended or evencancelled. Please note that participation feesfor our programs are based on adults steppingforward to volunteer; in the event that programshave to move to paid staff, program fees willhave to increase significantly. Please considervolunteering…as a coach or a team parent…the opportunities are endless! The reward isknowing that you made an investment in thefuture of our community…our children! Therecreation department can assist by offeringwritten materials and coaching clinics. Pleasecontact April Cioffi 282-5750 for additionalinformation.
