Michael Petris Hometown: Oxnard, CA Major: Music Minor: Education and Chicana/Chicano Studies Class of 2021 When Michael Petris is conducting, he is focused on making sure the musicians in front of him understand what he is trying to communicate with each gesture and facial expression. “Our job as conductors isn’t just to be a leader,” he says. “Our job is to be accommodating and useful to musicians—to understand a group and work with the group to make good music.” It’s a natural fit for the Oxnard native. “My two passions in life are music and people,” he says, and Michael is somebody who follows his passions. His discovery of music in middle school led him to pursue higher education, the first in his family to do so. “Rooted in being first gen, I think, are life skills that not everyone gets to develop so early,” he says, reflecting on the difficulty in figuring out application steps like financial aid on his own and his initial disorientation on arrival to campus. In 1955, on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks famously refused to give up her seat to a white passenger, sparking a yearlong bus boycott by the African American community — the first major action of the civil rights movement. The blended vacancy rate — including apartments leased by the unit and by the bed — is estimated to be 1.0 percent, compared with 0.5 percent in fall 2018. Rents increased by an average of 5.5 percent. Vacancy rates The report on the 44th vacancy- and rental-rate survey, designed to provide the campus and surrounding communities with information to support planning, comes as UC Davis is constructing more student housing on campus and addressing the issue of the affordability of student housing more broadly. According to the fall survey, 40 apartments, or 0.6 percent, of 7,207 leased by unit were vacant, compared with 0.4 percent vacant last year... For more than 100 years, goats have played a starring role in the teaching, research and outreach at the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. That connection grew stronger than ever Jan. 25 with the formal opening of the UC Davis Noel-Nordfelt Animal Science Goat Dairy and Creamery. “We’re really excited to see this come to fruition,” said Anita Oberbauer, animal science professor and associate dean of agricultural sciences. “At this new facility, we will be able to produce, market and sell Grade-A goat cheese while providing hands-on learning for students.” About 400 people toured the facility as part of the university’s annual Goat Day, which centered around tips and information for people who raise and care for goats. Attendees sampled cheese donated by alumna Erika McKenzie-Chapter of Pennyroyal Farm and Jennifer Bice of Redwood Hill Farm and Creamery. Continue Reading
