WINTER LECTURE PROGRAMME 2010/2011 Lectures are held in the William Smith Building, Keele University The committee invites you to join them for a meal at 6pm in the COMUS restaurant (01782 734121) to entertain the speaker before each lecture (except the AGM and Christmas Social). Please make your own booking with the restaurant mentioning that you wish to join the NSGGA party. The cost is approximately £9 for a twocourse meal not including wine or coffee. Thursday 14th October 19:30 ‘The genesis and evolution of sulphate evaporites in the Midlands’ Speaker: Dr. Noel Worley (SaintGobain) Evaporites are economically important industrial minerals and are essential sources of raw materials for not only manufacturing a wide range of goods but also to sustain life. The United Kingdom is fortunate to have World Class evaporite resources the most important of which formed during the Triassic Period. Triassic rocks underlie most of the Midlands and contain the most important of the sulphate evaporite deposits, gypsum and anhydrite. The latter have become the source of some of the attractive alabasters for which the deposits in the Dove and Trent Valley are famous. Thursday 18th November 19:30 The Tenth Wolverson Cope Lecture: ‘Permian Extinctions: death by fire’ Speaker Professor Paul Wignall (University of Leeds) The talk will centre on the two mass extinctions in the Permian and their relationship with the eruption of giant volcanic provinces. The older event, in the Middle Permian, is little known and associated with huge, shallow marine eruptions in South China. The younger event, at the end of the Permian, was the biggest in the history of life and coincided with the Siberian Traps eruptions. Thursday 9 December at 19:00 Christmas Social with talk on Eyjafjallajökull eruption in Iceland by Dr Peter Floyd The buffet will be £10 per person including wine, please book on the attached flyer by post enclosing the necessary payment by Friday 19th November. Thursday 13th January at 19:30 ‘Biogeochemical cycles; Bugs, bogs and labs’ by Dr Rebecca Bartlett (Birmingham University) Thursday 10th February at 19:30 ‘Coal bed methane’ by Professor Peter Styles (Keele University) Thursday 10th March at 19:00 AGM and Chairman’s Address. ‘British Earthquakes’ by Dr Ian Stimpson (Keele University)
