LETTER TO PARENT/GUARDIAN ________________________________________ We are asking that all students discuss with their parent/guardian this Career & Educational Course Guide, which is first provided to students in eighth grade. Every year thereafter, a supplemental sheet with current changes is provided to students in grades nine through twelve. We hope through effective communication between home and school, we may best help your son or daughter. Each student has been involved in a group orientation for course registration. Also, students and parents have the opportunity for an individual planning session with a school counselor to review the Career Portfolio. Each 8th grader will develop a tentative four-year plan of courses and activities for high school. The school counseling department encourages students to plan a schedule according to career and educational goals. This is especially important as most students seek post high school training. If students do not plan ahead, they may not be prepared for post high school classes, which proceed more rapidly and may be taught in larger sections than in high school. Also, while a student who has not planned ahead remedies deficiencies in college, other students are using the same time to strengthen majors and to pursue additional courses in their career fields. Students who complete a tentative four-year plan will find their high school years more satisfying and rewarding. Each year students will review course selections and make adjustments as career and educational goals become more refined or change. Please keep this Career & Educational Course Guide for future reference. Additional copies are available in the School Counseling Center and the guide is available on-line through the school’s website. The school counselors are always available to discuss your son or daughter’s high school plans, including post graduation options. Thank you for partnering with us to provide the best education possible for your child. School Counseling Department

COLLEGE AND CAREER PLANNING _____________________________________ Iowa Code specifies that all Iowa students, beginning in 8th grade, create a course plan for high school that supports their career options and educational plans. This begins in the 8th grade exploratory. Each child must share the plan with a parent/guardian. Iowa Code specifies students must review this plan each year in grades 9-12. As a parent, please review the plan with your child and approve it with your signature. If you have questions, please contact your junior high school counselor (462-3336) or your high school counselor (462-3320). COLLEGE ENTRANCE AND SCHOLARSHIP EXAMS _______________________

Each fall the PSAT/MNSQT is given at Winterset High School; sophomores and juniors who are planning to go to college are highly encouraged to take this exam. It measures skills critical to college success in reading, math, problem solving and writing. Juniors take the exam to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship program. It is also excellent preparation for the SAT and ACT. The ACT is a college admission test accepted by all four-year colleges and universities in the U.S. The ACT is given each year at Winterset High School in the fall and spring. Most students take the ACT during the spring of their junior year or fall of their senior year. Registration information is available in the Guidance Center. The SAT is a college admission test used widely across the nation. Any student planning to apply to colleges or universities outside of the Midwest would be wise to take the SAT. Most students take the SAT during the spring of their junior year or fall of their senior year. Registration information is available in the Guidance Center.

POLICIES AND GUIDELINES

Policies and guidelines will strive to provide excellent educational programs for students. Policies and guidelines reflect a block and term schedule. The high school uses a 4 X 4 block schedule. A term is 9 weeks.

ACADEMIC LETTERS ___________________________________________________ Academic letters are awarded to students who have a 3.0 grade point average or above after the first three terms of the school year. The 3.0 grade point average or above is determined in the same manner as the honor roll. "A" Honor Roll students for the first three terms, consecutively, are awarded a "star pin" along with their academic letter. If a student qualifies for an additional academic letter, they will receive a bar (or "star pin" if "A" honor roll) rather than a letter. To receive the All Around Academic Medal as a senior, a student must have taken 4 years of English, 4 years of math, 4 years of science, 3 years of social studies and 2 years of a foreign language.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT PROGRAM ____________________________________ Advanced Placement is for students seeking a challenging academic experience. Advanced Placement (AP) offers motivated students an exciting opportunity to pursue college level studies in high school. Those who choose to participate may be eligible to receive advanced placement standing, credit, or both when they enter college. AP offers 28 courses in 15 fields. An AP course usually takes a full school year in which to prepare for the exam(s) given every May. AP may be an intensive regular course designed according to AP guidelines or an independent study. Students pay the examination fee of approximately $80 per test. This is coordinated through the TAG department. The benefits of Advanced Placement include increased depth of knowledge and skills, enhanced academic experience, and possible ease of the financial burden of college. ALEKS _________________________________________________________________ Beginning fall semester 2014, students enrolling in DMACC math courses for the first time will be required to take a math placement assessment. This is required for any student taking a Winterset math course through concurrent enrollment for college credit. This test may be administered at Winterset High School through the math department. Students must receive a minimum score in order to enroll in college credit classes of Statistics, Pre-Calculus, or Calculus.

GRADING _______________________________________________________________ The four point grading system is used at Winterset High School. All grades are figured in the grade point average except teacher’s aide and physical education. Grades are given for work satisfactorily performed in a given course according to the following standards: A = 4.00 A- = 3.67 B+ = 3.33 B = 3.00 B- = 2.67 C+ = 2.33 C = 2.00 C- = 1.67 D+ = 1.33 D = 1.00 D- = 0.67 F = 0.00 To compute your high school percentile rank, subtract your position in class from the number of students in your high school class; divide the resulting number by the number of students in your class and multiply by 100. For example: If you are ranked number 124 in our class of 230, compute your percentile rank by subtracting 124 from 230 (230 - 124 - 106); then divide 106 by 230 (106/230 = .46) and multiply by 100 (.46 x 100 = 46). Your percentile rank is 46. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS & GRADUATION _________________________ All students will need 52 credits to graduate from Winterset High School. All students must participate in physical education unless excused by a physician, for religious beliefs, or enrolled as a senior with schedule difficulties as addressed in Board Policy 602.87 Students who are in good standing and who meet the graduation requirements set by the board are allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony and in senior activities. It is possible that students who are serving discipline at the time of the graduation ceremony or other senior activities will not be allowed to participate. HOMEWORK POLICY ___________________________________________________ Teachers assign homework, extra class activities or assignments as necessary. Homework is an opportunity for students to practice skills and activities, to share and discuss ideas, to review materials, to become acquainted with resources, to organize thoughts, to prepare for classroom activities or to make up incomplete class work. Students are expected to complete homework on time.

Students who do not complete their assignments may be required by a teacher to stay after school to complete assignments. Students failing to stay to make up homework may be required to serve a detention. Failure to complete homework may result in loss of class credit and a failing grade in the class. INCOMPLETE POLICY __________________________________________________ Students will have three days to finish course work. Once three days have passed, the grade may become a failing grade and the student will be declared ineligible. If there is a medical reason that makes it impossible to complete the work within three school days, the administrative team may develop an extended plan. LEARNING SEMINAR ____________________________________________________ Learning seminar is a time provided during the school day to help students with learning content and skills when students are having trouble, test make-ups and retakes, homework completion, and general skills students need to be successful in high school. MADISON COUNTY CAREER ACADEMY __________________________________ Winterset School District also offers career and technical programs through the Madison County Academy. Students can learn skills and obtain community college credits in nurse aide and advanced nurse aide, emergency medical tech, culinary arts, construction trades, electrical construction, and engineering. OPT OUT RULES AND TERMS ____________________________________________ Opting out of a term test is an earned privilege and can be taken away for reasons explained below.

1. Students will not have any office referrals or tardy detentions for the term. 2. Students need to have a 70% or better in the class and the instructor has the right to have

the student take the test. (Some classes do final projects and students cannot opt out of term projects.)

3. Students may not miss ANY class or Husky Pride more than 2 times a term. Exceptions to this will be made when the absent student’s return to school is accompanied by a doctor’s note stating the day(s) for which the student needs to be excused either for appointments or verified illness. Every attempt should be made to schedule appointments during non class/school times such as Wednesday mornings (late start) and other times so not to interfere with class instruction and attendance.

4. Students who opt out and are tardy to class after their privilege will lose their opt out for the rest of the year.

5. Any student removed from class for discipline reasons or having an ISS or OSS will lose the privilege for the rest of the year.

6. Students who do not serve their detentions by the end of the term will lose the opt out for the rest of the year.

PASS/FAIL ______________________________________________________________ A student may take a course on a pass-fail basis, with the approval of the school counselor, if it is not a required subject. Pass/fail applications must be renewed at the beginning of the second term for two term courses. Students may not take concurrent enrollment courses on a pass/fail basis. Only juniors & seniors will be allowed to take a class pass/fail. Students taking a pass/fail course will receive a “P”, which does not affect their GPA. Students who fail the course will receive an “F” on their transcript and the “F” is counted toward their GPA. PREREQUISITES ________________________________________________________ Note that some classes in the course descriptions require successful completion of another class before students may enroll in the listed class.

PROJECT LEAD THE WAY: SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATH CURRICULUM __________________________________________________________ The high school Pre-Engineering track is available to high school students in Winterset and area schools through a partnership agreement with Winterset. Our program will receive provisional certification from the national Project Lead the Way (PLTW) office, which will allow students to take the exam. Therefore, students who pass both the class as well as the end of the course examination may receive college credit through the University of Iowa or Iowa State University. Students, who pass the class, but not the end-of-course PLTW examination, will receive DMACC college credit.

REPEATING A CLASS ___________________________________________________ Students may take a course a second time with the prior permission of the principal and school counselor. The better grade will be used on school record/transcript and computed in the grade point average. Only one credit will count as required credit toward graduation. The purpose of this option is to help a student master the concepts and be ready to continue taking classes that will challenge them. REPORT CARDS _________________________________________________________ Report cards are available online through Infinite Campus at the end of each nine-week session. Letter grades are used to designate a student's progress for that term. (Students who have questions concerning attendance on the report card need to see the principal's secretary.) REQUIRED COURSES ____________________________________________________ Students will be assigned required courses by the administration. Required courses may not be dropped during the year without loss of credit. Elective courses may be dropped only before the term begins. Courses dropped after that time will result in no credit. A student grade entered on the student's permanent record will be an "F". Required courses total 32 credits.

SCHEDULE CHANGES ___________________________________________________ Students wishing to make a schedule change must do so before the term starts. Students will be notified of the dates to make any changes. All schedule changes must go through a counselor to verify credits, requirements and to base changes on career and educational plans. Schedule changes are not encouraged after the announced times; however, sometimes circumstances necessitate an adjustment because of the following situations: • Computer error • Student error in signing up for a course already successfully completed • Teacher recommendation. • Schedule changes for any other reason will require a parent conference.

SENIOR YEAR PLUS PROGRAMS _________________________________________

Senior Year Plus, enacted by the Iowa legislature in 2008, was created to provide increased and more equal access to college credit and advancement courses. Courses delivered through Senior Year Plus provide students the opportunity to take a rigorous college curriculum and receive, in many cases, both high school and college credit concurrently.

Winterset High School and Madison County Career Academy, as well as the Post-Secondary Educational Opportunity Act (PSEO), offer many opportunities for students to earn college credit during their high school career. These courses may transfer to a four-year institution. It is the responsibility of the student to communicate with other colleges to determine if and how credit will be accepted. Students are also responsible for requesting college transcripts be forwarded to the post-secondary school of their choosing. Eligibility. Students are required to meet ALL of the following conditions to be eligible to enroll in any course through a Senior Year Plus program. • The student shall meet the enrollment requirements established by the eligible postsecondary

institution. • The student shall have taken appropriate course prerequisites, if any, prior to enrollment in the

eligible postsecondary course. • The student shall have demonstrated proficiency in ALL of the content areas of reading, math,

and science as evidenced by achievement scores on the most recent administration of the Iowa Assessments.

• If the student is not proficient in one or more of the content areas, the district may consider other evidence of qualifying performance.
