Background to the Workshop • Idea for the workshop developed following discussion

with MAIRS at the LCLUC Urumqi, Workshop– Opportunity to expand MAIRS activities in Monsoon SE Asia with

a focus on Land Use • Opportunity to strengthen collaborations in SE Asia

– Revitalize the GOFC/GOLD Regional Networks• Increasing number of spaceborne assets in the region,

China, India, Japan, Thailand – Opportunity to explore collaborations on satellite data acquisition

strategies, data sharing and exchange – Congratulations to GISTDA on the successful launch of THEOS

• Increasing convergence of several international program interests


NASA LCLUC• Land use change science (integrated natural and social

science) – Global to Regional Scale Focus– Funding regional case studies to understand LU processes

• Partnering with global and regional science programs e.g. NEESPI, CARPE, LBA, GLP, MAIRS

• Partnering with global programs e.g. GOFC, CEOS WGISS LPV • NASA projects encouraged to partner with regional scientists

– Examples of current emphases LUC impacts/consequences on • Biogeochemical cycling (carbon), water cycle• Climate change and CC impacts on LU e.g. agriculture, forestry• The built environment – urban and coastal zone
