Completing the MA in Teaching and Learning in Further andHigher Education (MALT) was a wonderful learning experience. All of the lecturers on the course were without exception topclass and very committed. I have vivid memories from the coursewhere the lecturers created a very positive and supportivelearning environment while at the same time they challenged and encouraged us.

I had previously worked in a number of management, IT and business roles. In 2010, I made a decision to change career paths and I returned to educationto pursue the MALT course. The courseequipped me with the academic and practical skills to be an effective teacher and I am now teaching adultsin the Further Education sector. I find this work very satisfyingand rewarding.

I would advise any student starting out to fully immersethemselves in the course and to enjoy the learning experience. Go into every classwith an open and positive frameof mind. ‘I chose to study at WIT because of its reputation for outstanding graduate employability, excellent teaching standards and impressiveStudent Services.

I undertook the BBS in order to achieve high value added skills, knowledge and networks necessary for me to make improved strategicbusiness decisions that would add significant value to the industry Iwork in. The diversity of subjects offered in the course from Economicsto Finance to Leadership meant that I gained exposure to every aspectof a business function and I now have a deeper understanding and appreciation of cross functional relationships andstrategies.

The BBS at WIT is taught by experts in theirfield, most of whom have an abundance of industry knowledge and experience whichensured the skills I learnt were directlytransferable to the market place. I left secondary school during 5th year. At the time, I felt that formal education was not for me. Eight years later andwith a better understanding of the benefits of education andqualifications, I started an engineering degree in WIT throughadult education. As I was working full-time, attending eveningclasses was the only feasible option for me to partake in studies.

At first, the workload seemed overwhelming, but with a bit of hard work and help frommy classmates the semesters flew by andI even enjoyed some of the classes. Some of our lecturers worked in local industries, which allowed them to provideus with real life experience and relevant examples of industry trends. My classmates were all employees of various local companies, and each was able to give an insight to practices and procedures within theirworkplaces.

I have recently graduatedwith an Honours Degree in Computer Aided Manufacturing and I amnow looking to pursuepostgraduate study.

As it was some years since I studied, I was a bit daunted by the prospect of attending college. I was quickly put at ease by the very helpful and understanding lecturers.

When I complete my qualification later thisyear, I believe that it will have enhanced myown life and prepared me with a new set of skills that will add to my previousexperience and therefore increase and widen my future career prospects. It has given me a greater understanding and knowledge in the field of IT.

I would advise anyone thinkingof doing a course in WIT to “Go for it”. Plan your time and help is there if you needit. You are never too old tolearn something new andwho knows - you might actually enjoy the experience. I know I did. I am glad I did.

It was over thirty years since I had been in education. As the course was part-time it was flexible enough to allow me to continue working. The lecturers’ knowledge and expertise in their relevant fieldswas exemplary. I also found that as theclass sizes were small, it was difficultfor any student in the class to feel isolated or lost. I would recommendthe degree to anyone who wishes toprogress in the field.

My confidence and self-esteem hasgreatly improved. It took the fearout of third level education, enhanced my life and allowed me toenjoy learning. Adult education isthe perfect setting to return toeducation. Life experience is apowerful base no matter whatcourse you want to do. Believein yourself and your abilitiesand take the opportunity to return to education when itarises. You won’t regret it as it will add value to all that you undertake in life.

The Higher Certificate in Arts in Advocacy Studies was designed by IT Sligo and is aimed at people whowork as advocates or would like to develop their skills in this area. The WIT/IT Sligo initiative offers a realcontinuing professional development opportunity for people working in the field of advocacy.

Advocacy is defined as representing others in areas where they require support, or representingpersons who cannot represent themselves. Advocacy services go some way to redress the inequalitiesbetween the individual and large powerful organisations. For many years, informal advocacy hasalways existed but formal services are beginning to develop particularly in the disability area. As suchit is away to ‘level the playing field’ for marginalised groups it allows them to claim their entitlementsand exercise choices; and protects their quality of life in circumstances where they may be dependenton services.
