NATIONAL FRAMEWORK OF QUALIFICATIONS

What is the National Framework of Qualifications? The NFQ forms the basis of a new more flexible and integrated system of qualifications. The NFQ, through its ten levels, provides a means of comparing and contrasting nationaland international education and training qualifications. For example, a student enters WITat Higher Certificate Level 6, can graduate with a Higher Certificate after two years and thenchose to progress on to Level 7 and beyond.

Progression to a Postgraduate QualificationStudents who complete an Honours Bachelor Degree at Level 8, often go on to dopostgraduate study. More information on taught and research postgraduate options areavailable at www.wit.ie/pg

Returning to education as a part-time student was thebest decision I made. I thoroughly enjoyed my timeas a student as the course was flexible and allowedme to combine my studies with full-time work. Thecourse was very interesting and it was very beneficialto study with students from different backgrounds. The lecturers were supportive and understood thatmany of us were combining study and workloads.

Having successfully completed the Masters, I haveprogressed in my career because of the skills andknowledge gained through my studies. My life hascompletely changed, I have a job that I really enjoy. My advice to anyone considering becoming a part-time student is to go for it as you will be supported, encouraged and challenged. You will learn new skillsand you will meet some fantastic people.

Gaining a qualification has given me greater confidencein my own ability to contribute at work. The BBS (Hons)gave me a broad knowledge of every aspect of businessand helped me understand how my decision makingaffects the business as a whole. Returning to educationcan be daunting but I realised quickly that all myclassmates were in the same boat.

Completing my Degree was made easier with thesupport and encouragement of my classmates andlecturers. Adult students have a wealth of knowledgethat they sometimes don’t even realise they have.Understanding different perspectives and practices reallyenriches your learning experience. Knowledge isaddictive: once you start, you just want to keep learningand expanding your skills. My aim now is to complete aMasters Degree.

When I started the Higher Certificate in Engineering inManufacturing Technology I was a little bit concerned aboutgoing back to education. However I quickly found that I wasenjoying the course. The subjects were interesting and weredelivered using engaging learning techniques which made itall the more enjoyable.

I am now studying the BEng in Engineering in ManufacturingEngineering and found the progression from the HigherCertificate to be seamless. I plan to continue my part timestudy with the BSc (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering whenI have finished my current course.

I would say to anyone who is contemplating going back toeducation to just do it and not to get demotivated by thelength of time it will take in order to gain your qualification. You might find that you start off in one course and end uphaving undertaken another when it is completed!

Studying at WIT opened up a whole new experienceto me. While the challenge of third level study wastough at times, the support of the lecturers and myfellow classmates kept me going and helped mebelieve in myself. With this belief, I have enjoyedstudying and researching different aspects relating toSocial Care. As a mature student, it is challenging toorganise your time especially if you are working andhave family commitments.

However, the confidence and the sense ofachievement gained by completing an exam orassignment far outweigh the challenges. It isimportant to enjoy the experience and the newfriendships you will make. If you’re a maturestudent thinking of studying at WIT, I think it is wellworth the experience.
