A guide to the best real ale pubs in East Lancashire

Come and tastethe difference!

www.moorhouses.co.uk

Why not organise a party to visit Moorhouse’s Burnley brewery?

Moorhouse's Brewery is the only brewery in the World to have had each of it's core brands achieve recognition at

The Brewing Industry International Awards.

We can arrange tours for parties to learn more about 140 years of brewing at our brewery;

•to have the intricacies of the process explained by professionals; •to see, touch, smell and taste the raw ingredients used in the process; •to see the yeast actively converting the sugars into alcohol during the

different stages of fermentation.

After the tour, the party retires to our ‘brewery tap’, the GeneralScarlett, just across the road from the brewery, for a chance to

‘taste the difference’ and sample our prize-winning ales.

There’s also a traditional supper - or sumptuous buffet - andeach member of the party will receive a presentation pack

containing bottles of two of our award-winning beers, Black Cat and Pendle Witches Brew.

Brewery tours are arranged for parties of 15-30 people and are normally conducted on

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings, commencing at 7:30pm.

There are four Brewery Tour Packages to choose from, ranging from £10 up to £20.50 per head.

Further information can be found on ourwebsite or alternatively by ringing Moorhouse’s Brewery

on 01282 422864 to request a ‘packages’ leaflet. Please note that all party members must be aged 18 years or over.

East Lancashire CAMRA

Today there are no fewer than eight breweries in East Lancashire. Twenty years ago, back in 1986 when the last Witch Beer? was produced, there were just three. Since then the Matthew Brown brewery at Blackburn has been closed by Scottish and Newcastle in 1991.

Today’s eight local breweries range in size from the tiny 2.5 barrel plant of Hopstar in Darwen to Thwaites in Blackburn, the seventh largest brewery in the country!

With the help of this guide you should easily be able to fi nd places to try beers from each of our local breweries. Go out there and support them!

Breweries in East Lancashire

BOWLANDThe Bowland BreweryBashall Town, Clitheroe, BB7 3LQt01200 428825wwww.bowlandbrewery.com

Richard Baker started brewing in 2003 us-ing a five-barrel plant from the Fuzz & Firkin pub in Southsea, initially at an industrial unit in Accrington, and moved to Bashall in late January 2004. The brewery is in an old milking parlour behind the Bashall Barn Farmshop in possibly England’s smallest town, close to the geographical heart of the kingdom. The capacity of the brewery has been recently increased to cope with de-mand. The regular beers are supplemented by monthly specials.

Bowland Dragon (OG 1043, ABV 4.2%) A golden premium bitter with rounded fruit in the mouth and a refreshing finish.

Bowland Gold (OG 1039, ABV 3.8%)A hoppy golden bitter with hints of orange and a slightly floral finish.

Chipping Steamer (OG 1040, ABV 3.9%)A mid-gold bitter with hints of orange and a slightly floral finish.

Hen Harrier (OG 1040, ABV 4.0%)A pale gold bitter with soft citrus, peach and apricot flavours throughout.

Hunter’s Moon (OG 1039, ABV 3.7%)A dark mild with chocolate, coffee and biscuit flavours.

Sawley Tempted (OG 1038, ABV 3.7%)A copper coloured fruity session bitter with toffee flavour in the mouth and a spicy finish.

HOPSTARHopstar Breweryc/o Black Horse, 72 Redearth Road, Darwen, BB3 [email protected]

Hopstar started brewing in 2005 using a half barrel plant from Red Rose. Later a 2.5 barrel plant was commissioned from Porter Brewery and additional fermentation vessels have been added to cope with demand.

Dynamo Dee (ABV 4.2%)

THWAITESDaniel Thwaites plcStar Brewery, Blackburn, BB1 5BUt01254 686868wwww.thwaites.co.uk

Daniel Thwaites, an excise officer, started brewing in Blackburn in 1807, so their 200th anniversary is being celebrated as this guide is published. The company is still controlled by the Yerburgh family, descend-ants of the founder. Real ale is available in about two-thirds of the company’s 430 tied houses, however many of their town centre pubs do not stock real ale. Their excellent Dark Mild is also becoming increasingly difficult to find – unless you read this guide! A selection of seasonal beers are also produced. In addition, Thwaites is a contract brewer so they can and bottle products for other companies.

Dark Mild (OG 1036, ABV 3.3%)A tasty traditional northern mild presenting a malty flavour with caramel notes and a slightly bitter finish.

Double Century (ABV 4.8%)A strong ale to celebrate the brewery’s 200 year anniversary.

Lancaster Bomber (OG 1044, ABV 4.4%)A recreation of a beer once brewed by Mitchell’s of Lancaster. Hop driven yet well balanced copper-coloured best bitter with firm malt flavours and autumn fruit notes and a long dry finish.

Original (OG 1036, ABV 3.6%)Hop-driven yet well-balanced session bitter with subtle apple flavour and long dry finish.

Thoroughbred (OG 1040, ABV 4.0%)A copper coloured best bitter with a dry hop aroma. It has a balanced taste with a rather thin finish.
