Outdoorsy launches guides to more than 500 events

INDUSTRY newswith Editor Jamie Macready

RV rental firm Outdoorsy has launched more than 500 informative and user-friendly event guides. According to a press release, the guides

provide pretrip planning and on-the-road navigation, while also feature events that fall into three categories, including: Events to camp

on-site, like NASCAR races; events people can attend in an RV, like an NFL tailgate and music festivals; and events RVers can attend while just passing through.

“RVs make events and festivals accessible in a whole new way,” says Jen Young, Outdoorsy’s co-founder and chief marketing officer. “We wanted to open up options to our first time and returning renters - to show them RV travel possibilities, including activities and accommodations, they may not have considered before.”

Travelers can expect to find informative event descriptions, answers to common questions, ticket purchasing info, ideas on where to camp nearby, what gear to pack, places to eat, driving directions, and parking and camping guidelines - all paired with rental options for various categories of RVs.

In addition to the insider tips and tricks, the new guides also soon showcase reviews and photos from past attendees.

SIMPLY stated, this is a motto to live by today when managing your digital marketing campaign. There are many elements that go into an effective campaign, but ultimately they need to attract potential visitors, continue to engage them, and ultimately convert them into visiting your RV park or campground. Sometimes this doesn’t

happen in one fell swoop. You can’t simply have a website today and hope that in one visit there will be immediate action.

Any business, regardless of industry and that does includes campground and RV park owners, should be embracing this digital era as it has never been

more targeted and affordable. However, since technology

continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it is understandable that this can get put on a back burner until you have time to catch up on the latest tools. I would like to share with you how you can strategically use the right digital tools now to reach, grow, and engage your audience, while helping you make more informed decisions about your digital marketing campaign.

Your website can be considered the cornerstone of your digital marketing strategy. This is where possible visitors get their first impression of you. But did you know that it only takes 1/20th of a second for visitors to your site to make a decision to stay or leave? A website needs to have good visuals, appropriately sized layouts, intuitiveness, immediacy to information and, most importantly, it needs to be optimized for conversion. A few of the tools to lead your website visitors down this path is to offer an immediate chat window, phone number, email sign up, and a clear call to action based on their reservation type.

The next thing to focus on is how to continue to market to potential visitors who leave your site. The fact is it takes an average of 6 to 8 follow-up touches to a visitor to get them to convert into a customer. This is where marketing automation comes into play to continue to reach

those departing visitors by offering them items of interest in multiple environments such as social media, email, display networks, and more. You can achieve this by using tracking pixels. This allows you to create custom audiences based on your website visitors and the information they viewed. From here you can serve them ads based on information they have viewed on your page such as cabins or pull-through RV sites. This allows you to more accurately target people based on their interests. Marketing automation is one of the most user-friendly marketing tools out there because it’s tailored around personalized user experiences. You’re not blasting audiences with irrelevant advertising messages and alienating them.

All in all, when you continue to communicate with such prospects and give them practical, relevant information on a consistent basis, you remain top of mind so that when they come to the point when they are ready to visit your area, you’re there front and center. That is why you continue to reach and engage them until they buy, die or unsubscribe!

Today there are many different tactics at your disposal to drive real results. It is a matter of spending the time, money and energy to deploy a well-driven campaign. Having specialized in web design and marketing

Jellystone Parks to host Prospective Owners Workshop

CINCINNATI, OHIO - On pace for its 11th consecutive year of record revenues, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resorts is planning another franchise expansion campaign. The campaign will include a prospective investors and owners workshop on November 10th at the Embassy Suites in Charleston, S.C.

The Jellystone Park 101 workshop will provide prospective franchisees with in-depth information regarding the Jellystone Park brand. “The family camping market is exploding across the country,” said Jim Westover, Vice President of Product Development and Sales. “The Jellystone Park concept

is extremely appealing to millennial families who want to enjoy pools, water slides and splashgrounds, activities and the comforts of premium cabins while vacationing.”

The Jellystone Park 101 workshop will include a walk-through of the various ways individuals can build a new Jellystone Park location, transition an existing campground into a Jellystone Park location, or purchase an existing franchise location. The discussion will include

information about the various financing options available from Business Finance Depot to fund a new build, an expansion of an existing campground, or the acquisition of a campground.

The information session will also include an overview of the camping industry by National School of RV Park and Campground Management instructors and a hospitality presentation by LLA Hospitality, a leading provider of outdoor and experiential

hospitality management services.

“The Jellystone Park 101 workshop is designed to help investors and owners determine whether or not operating a Jellystone Park location is right for them,” Westover said. “Our goal is to educate them about the processes involved with obtaining a park, the day-to-day operations of a franchise location, and the financial benefits of owning a Jellystone Park location.”

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park earned a string of accolades in 2019. The brand was ranked No. 202 in Entrepreneur magazine’s 2019 Franchise 500 rankings for its outstanding growth, financial stability and brand power. The ranking was the third consecutive year Entrepreneur magazine ranked Jellystone Park the number one franchise in the camping category.

The brand was also recently named one of the Top 100 franchises in the United States by Franchise Gator and named one of the country’s top franchises in terms of franchisee satisfaction and named one of the nation’s most innovative franchises by Franchise Business Review.

CampCalNOW making final changes on 2020 guide

CAMP-CALIFORNIA is wrapping up production on the 2020 Camper’s Guide, which is close to going to print, according to officials at the CampCalNOW RV Park and Campground Alliance (CampCalNOW).

CampCalNOW members only have a short amount of time left to make any changes to their listing or include additional upgrades.

In 2019, Camp-California ran a California Cavern theme, turning the guide more into a collector’s item rather than just an annual

publication, resulting in the highest distribution rate in years, said officials at CampCalNOW.

To make changes or include a last minute upgrade to your listing, call the Camp-California office immediately at (530) 885-1624.

Changes to online listings on Camp-California.com can be changed at anytime, but the printed guide (200,000 copies) cannot be altered after it’s printed.

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to shows we’ll goby Art Lieberman

OK, Spring has gone and so has Summer and now is the time Campground Owner’s thoughts turn to Conventions. This indeed is our industry’s season for owner’s to receive an education at seminars, meet the leaders in the industry and for suppliers and buyers to come together, It never ceases to amaze me that there are actually campground owners that DO NOT attend shows and, even a few, who have NEVER attended a trade show.

It does seem to me that campground owners and suppliers are a brotherhood. There are suppliers whose entire business is dedicated to selling to, and servicing campgrounds.

We on the other hand, as credit card processors can service any retail or service industry with credit

card processing. But 15 years ago, we discovered the campground industry by accident, and a fortunate accident it was. When we decided to specialize in this industry. our first move was to join an association. Since we are in Pennsylvania, we chose the PCOA and we met Beverly Gruber, who welcomed us with open arms. We have never missed a PCOA convention since then. At that first show, we got a head start

and we met other suppliers and quite a few owners. We also learned about ARVC and were quick to join the National Association too.

This is our 15th year as members of the Supplier Council.

We attended many shows every year. We attended shows in Phoenix, Orlando, Knoxville, Nashville, Savannah and Las Vegas with ARVC and shows in Florida for that association, Michigan,

Ohio, Mid-Atlantic, CONY (NY’s Association) Virginia, Kentucky (for Yogi Bear Jellystone Parks), Rev Up in Reno for 3 western states, and, of course the Northeast Campground Owners show(s) in Massachusetts and Nashua, New Hampshire. All-in-all, over the years we have attended over 60 trade shows as suppliers.

We even ran our own VIRTUAL trade show called “The Outdoor Virtual Hospitality Expo” for the industry in both 2010 and 2011 and again in 2015. The last show turned out to be an international affair because the Internet made that possible. There were minor technical flaws in the first show BUT over 3,600 campground personnel attended the show on the web. It was a huge success for us, but the technology was difficult for campground owners to utilize. In the final attempt we drew attendees from 31 countries, which was phenomenal, but our USA campground owner attendance dropped. All the virtual shows had virtual booths where owners and suppliers could communicate and demonstrate their wares and it also had LIVE webinars, which were recorded and could be viewed at any time of day or night. The Expo ran live for 3 days, but the booths and webinars were accessible for 90 days. It was a worthwhile experiment, but a little before its time.

As before, MCPS for Campgrounds relies primarily

on tele-marketing to obtain customers. But because of our memberships in 17 State and regional associations and because we do write articles for several industry publications, such as this one, we have gained a tremendous reputation in this glorious industry.

Because of my age (79) and because our principal staff is needed here in PA to supply customer service, we have had to cut back on traveling to distant shows. Now the only shows we attend are: CONY, at Turning Stone Casino Resort in Verona, NY from 10/27 -10/30; the PCOA in State College, PA from 12/9 – 12/10 and The Northeast Campground Show

in Danvers, MA from 3/19/20 – 3/21/20.

We will be attending two more trade shows soon, one of which is also at Turning Stone in February, from 2/2420 – 2/26/20 – but it is NOT for campgrounds. It is the Upstate New York Gift Expo. The other show is a local show for the PCOA, which is held only 8 miles from our base which also runs in March of 2020.

There is one show we must, unfortunately miss, but YOU should not. That, of course, is ARVC. This year in Knoxville, TN from 11/4 – 11/7 at the Knoxville Convention center.

Calif. exec promotes Halloween activities in Fox News report

AUBUN, Calif - CampCalNow President Dyana Kelley was featured in a Fox News report last week that highlights pre-Halloween themed activities taking place at campgrounds across the state.

“I think families are really looking for a very safe, fun activity that their kids can do,” Kelley said in her Oct. 8 appearance on Fox 40, the Fox News affiliate in Sacramento. “Most of the people that come to campgrounds for Halloween are (into) 100 participation. They are all there to join in the fun.”

Kelley highlighted several campgrounds with unique pre-Halloween and fall activities, including:

- 49er Village RV Park in Plymouth: This campground has campsite decorating

contests and some park guests who convert their RVs into mini-haunted houses. The park is open to the public after 6 p.m. on Halloween themed weekends.

- Inn Town Campground in Nevada City: This campground’s activities include a Haunted Pathway, a craft hour and trick or treating at its sister property, The Outside Inn.

- San Francisco North /

Petaluma KOA in Petaluma: This campground’s activities include a Spooktacular potluck as well as hay rides and a petting zoo.

- Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Lodi: This campground offers a pumpkin patch, campsite decorating and costume contests as well as Monster Mash parties.

Kelley held up a copy of this year’s camping guide, Camp-California! The Campers Guide to California and Nevada, throughout her report. She also told consumers they can visit Camp-California.com to find more information about

Halloween activities as well as lots of other camping tips, which consumers can receive by signing up for the association’s Campfire Newsletter.

ARVC’s OHCE to feature new green initiativesBio-degradable Lanyards, Paperless Education, Digital Signage Highlight Eco-Friendly Event

THE NATIONAL Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) created the Plan-It Green Friendly Park Program to incentivize and reward parks that participate in eco-friendly and sustainable practices, offering recognition including two Plan-It Green Park of the Year awards each year. In an effort to continue these initiatives at an organizational level, ARVC is making this year’s Outdoor Hospitality Conference and Expo (OHCE) its most environmentally-friendly event yet.

This year’s OHCE will feature eco-friendly badges and lanyards from KLEERTECH®, made from 100% bio-degradable materials, allowing them to be disposed of in any receptacle without fear of waste.

Education sessions this

year will be designed to be paperless, as each attendee will receive a USB drive with classroom materials preloaded. Attendees will also have access to additional documents and presentation information after OHCE through our new online education portal, eliminating the need for printed handouts. The portal will also allow for all continuing education units (CEUs) to be handled online instead of being proctored with print materials.

Post-conference surveys, educational tracking and additional conference communication will also be paperless, including additional focus on the official OHCE2019 App, sponsored by CampLife, for smartphones and tablets. This app will provide up-to-date information

for your week at OHCE, including the entire schedule, education overview, speaker bios, a fully interactive Expo floor map and much more.

The Knoxville Convention Center features several energy-efficient elements that ARVC will be partnering to push during the event. The new ARVC store will sell reusable drinkware that can be used at water fountains throughout the convention center. ARVC is also using the electronic signage for much of its branding and informative

signage, which combined with reusing previous imagery from OHCE 2018, will lessen the environmental impact of the conference.

At the annual ARVC Awards of Excellence Dinner, two parks will be named Plan-It Green Park of the Year (Small/Medium and Large/Mega categories), highlighting efforts to show leadership, innovation and commitment to running a green park.

Carolina Pines reports strong numbers at grand opening

CONWAY, SC. - With a water park, mini-golf, fine Southern dining, Carolina cottages and more on site, Tom O’Branovic said the facilities at new RV park Carolina Pines are second to none.

Still, the Senior Vice President of Sun Communities, the park’s parent company, said he’s heard the most praise coming in reference to the staff and overall experience they provide.

“(The facilities) are … really tremendous. But it’s really our staff that makes the difference,” he said Tuesday during a grand opening that included a champagne-adorned ribbon cutting, competitions and giveaways. “We’ve had so much great feedback from that. That’s our No. 1 priority. Of course you need clean, neat facilities, but you also need a great

experience and they do a great job with that.”

Those sentiments have developed over nearly four months of business, as the RV park opened July 1 at 5800 S.C. Highway 90 in Conway. The park currently has about 450 sites open, with the majority of them for RVs and others that house cottages, as plans call for a total of 841 spots to be completed in 2020.

“It’s going very well,” O’Branovic said of business, noting the hope is to have the final phase completed by Memorial Day 2020. “We’re even probably overly surprised at the reception we’ve received on reservations all the way from the RV sites going to the end of the year to our vacation rentals.”

O’Branovic said weekends throughout the summer were completely booked while

weekdays were usually about 80 percent filled up. The park is taking reservations for the summer of 2020.

“If you want to get in during the peak time of the summer, the earlier the better because those will go fast and they do sell out,” O’Branovic said.

As the calendar has shifted to fall, O’Branovic said business has remained steady - albeit not as busy as summer, as expected - with people booking to enjoy Halloween and other fall-themed amenities, one-of-a-kind experiences that shift along with the seasons. Further into the year he expects Snowbirds to start filing in.

“As soon as July 1 hit, the reception was tremendous. We’re hoping to exceed expectations by the end of the year,” he said.

O’Branovic expects business to fluctuate between 30 percent - during the slower months - and 100 percent capacity throughout the year. And while the park offers some traditional RV amenities, it also includes shuttle access to a private beach club, Carolina Pines Beach Club, located near North Myrtle Beach.

“It’s a big RVing experience,” O’Branovic said. “It’s trending across the country.”

Escapees announces ‘RV to Freedom’ acquisition

ESCAPEES RV Club announced the acquisition of all RV to Freedom (RVTF) properties including its popular course “Roadmap to Full-Time RVing.”

According to a press

release, the course leads the customer from the dreaming stage to becoming a full or part-time RVer. It also includes the RV to Freedom Facebook group with over 39,000 members. Over the coming

months, Escapees plans to bring RV to Freedom under the Escapees umbrella and expand its own resources with those created by RVTF.

“We know the ‘Roadmap to Full-Time RVing’ course will be a perfect complement to the other courses currently offered in RVers Online University. Escapees RV Club and RV to Freedom are both dedicated to educating and supporting RVers making this a perfect fit,” explained Escapees RV Club CEO Shawn Loring. “We plan to continue hosting the Facebook group helping to make RV knowledge accessible for everyone

and adapt and expand our resources.”

The founders of RV to Freedom, Kerensa Durr and Brandon Hatcher, have joined Escapees RV Club as director of marketing and brand director, respectively, earlier this year and will help oversee the incorporation of RV to Freedom into Escapees.

Durr stated, “We have a stake in and affinity for both companies and their members. We knew Escapees was the best home for RV to Freedom and we’re happy that we’ll still be involved.”

Researchers: Humans’ noise becomes harder to ignore at national parks

RESEARCHERS have identified an invisible threat posing an increasing challenge for national parks such as Rocky Mountain National Park, Yosemite and others across the country.

Anthropogenic noise is defined as noise due to human activity. Noise made by machines and people is heard in 37% of recordings collected from Park Service lands around the country.

The noise pollution is problematic, disturbing the peace for people visiting the parks, as well as the animals who live there. For many animals, being able to hear their surroundings and determine their safety is key to their survival. Some species

even rely on listening for the song of a potential mate.

To tackle the problem, a team of scientists from Colorado State University and the Park Service has spent the past decade studying the effects of anthropogenic noise on national parks. The team found that recreational watercraft and trains create the loudest noise, but the sources of the greatest noise are vehicles and aircraft

Researchers analyzed 46,789 hours of audio from 66 parks, producing a firm understanding of the frequency of noise, the types of noises heard, and how loud the noises were. The sounds were analyzed in CSU’s listening lab.

“Listening lab is where undergraduate students listen to the data in detail and identify these sources of noise,” explained Emma

Brown, who works in the Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division of the Parks Service and worked on the study.

“Without the laboratory, I don’t think this research could have been possible. All that undergrad time invested really allows a paper of this magnitude to come together.”

The study was led by Rachel Buxton, a postdoctoral fellow doing research with CSU and the U.S. National Parks Service.

When discussing why the research was important to her, Buxton said, “It’s a really good example of science being done to inform management and inform how we can make things better. We know noise pollution is an issue in our parks, but we don’t know where it is, and we don’t know what is causing it. We need to know those things because we have the technology to tackle these issues.”

A leading cause of anthropogenic noise is human voices. Quiet zones have been suggested as a solution to the noise issue. These zones require people to speak in conversational level voices and to turn their cellphones off.

The Park Service continuously works to improve parks’ sound environments and find innovative solutions to noise, scientists said.

2 ways music can help make more money for your parkClay's Park Resort shares how they make music an integral part of the guest experience.

NORTH LAWRENCE, OHIO - As a philosopher once said, "Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without." So that begs the question: Are your guests “doing without” musical entertainment that could enhance their enjoyment of your park and boost your business at the same time? If the answer is “yes,” you just may want to change your tune.

ARVC member-park Clay’s Park Resort in North Lawrence, Ohio is a great example of a campground that makes music an integral part of their guest experience. So, we asked Stephanie Axtell, event marketing specialist for Clay’s Park, to share some best practices for using music to boost their business. Here are two ideas she shared:

1. HIRE A LOCAL DJ“We host family dance

parties every Saturday night at a pavilion in our campground,” Axtell says. “This is one of our most highly-attended scheduled activities and absolutely plays a factor in the guest experience.

This season, we also implemented after-hours parties at our Adventure Water Park. These celebrations were open to our campers after swimming closed for the day. We implemented fun lighting (tiki torches, neons), family games and DJ entertainment from 8 pm-10:30 pm. Swimming was not permitted. The Beach Concession Stand and Tiki Bar offered drink specials and food specials. This was very successful for us this summer. We had great attendance and generated positive income.”

2. LEVERAGE LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

Clay’s Park also schedules live entertainment all season long at multiple locations throughout the resort.

“We book a variety of solo, duo, trio and full band groups.” Axtell says.

The campground hosts local and regional bands at the water park every Saturday and Sunday afternoon during the swimming season. She says guests enjoy the entertainment and she described how having live entertainment positively impacts their business.

“Many bands bring a following which results in additional camping sales,” she says. “These original bands promote our brand on their own social media accounts which enhances our reach and positively

displays our support of local and original music. We often utilize a mobile concession/alcohol setup directly by the stage (to supplement existing concession stands) which has resulted in an increase in revenue.”

Axtell says live music is an integral part of the business model at Clay’s Park.

“Not only does it increase our ancillary income operations, but it also contributes to our activities programming, has a positive impact on our branding and plays a strong role in delivering a unique guest experience - an experience that results in campers choosing Clay’s Park Resort and choosing to return.

HOW TO GET STARTED

If you want to start playing music at your park, the first step is to get the proper music license to avoid copyright law infringement which can result in costly fines. But don’t worry - ARVC has your back.

The ARVC Combined Music License, an exclusive ARVC member benefit, allows you to secure coverage for both ASCAP and BMI at a drastically reduced rate with savings of up to 50 percent. You can also sign up for a discounted SESAC license through ARVC.

The best campgrounds near major U.S. cities

ABOVE: Mountain Glen RV Park and Campground in Pikeville, Tennessee RIGHT: St Hazards Waterfront Resort and Brewery in Middle Bass Island, Ohio

WITH the temperatures dropping and the trees beginning to turn, it’s natural to wonder if you made the most of your summer. Or if you might have made too much of it. It’s easy to mess up a perfectly good season with an overpacked schedule. If you could use a few more days to relax, or if you just need one final immersion in nature before winter sets in, you’re in luck. With the help of our friends at Pitchup.com, we’ve scouted a slew of

campgrounds that are just an hour outside major U.S. cities.

Below are a few of our favorite campgrounds for quick weekend getaways. While none of these campgrounds are what you’d call “backcountry”— they all feature on-site camp stores, laundry and shower facilities, and most offer a common room with TV and Wi-Fi

accessibility — they do offer an opportunity to stretch out your summer with an escape to nature before the weather gets inhospitable. And since camping high season is pretty much over in most of the U.S., going now practically guarantees that you’ll get to enjoy the beautiful fall colors and crisp temperatures in near solitude.

If you’re craving a retreat into nature, don’t overthink it. Pack a bag, toss a sleeping bag in your trunk, and hop on the nearest highway to one of these amazing, city-adjacent campgrounds.

CRANBERRY RUN CAMPGROUND

East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

Ask any hustling 20- to 30-something New Yorker, and they’ll tell you that the key to thriving in the city is getting out of it sometimes. There’s no better retreat than this 65-acre woodland hollow in the Pocono Mountains. Refresh your soul with a morning canoe trip or a meandering hike along the Delaware River, or just a long daydreaming sesh as you gaze up into the green forest ceiling. If you want to break up the day a little, take a trip into nearby Monroe County and visit the local casino or the indoor flea market.

Big cities: New York City, Phildelphia

Nashville will transport you to another world, surrounded by the rolling mountains of Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. Along with a fishing pond, private bathrooms (what?!) and free Wi-Fi throughout the grounds, the campground is just fifteen minutes’ drive from Fall Creek Falls State Park, the state’s southeastern showpiece, where you’ll find forests, caves, gorges, and a majestic waterfall crashing 78 meters into a crystal pool.
