My dear friends in Christ,
With heartfelt gratitude, I present to you the 2014-2015 Alliance for Catholic Urban Education Honor Roll of Donors. It is indeed an honor to recognize the kindness and generosity of those who helped last year to advance this vital ministry. Their support translated into gifts of Catholic education for economically disadvantaged children who attend one of our six Diocesan urban elementary schools.
I thank you. I thank you on behalf of the students and their families. In addition, I thank you on behalf of the Diocese for helping us maintain an important presence within our official mission territory, the urban areas of Campbell and Kenton Counties.
Most of you know that the ACUE schools hold a special place in my heart. I myself am a product of an urban grade school and the school, located on the Southside of Chicago, played a critical role in who I am today. This ministry is so important to me, and to our region, that several years ago some of our priests established a named scholarship fund in memory of my dear sister to support the mission of the ACUE schools. I contribute to the scholarship fund each year and am very touched to know that through it deserving children of our Diocese, regardless of their faith, receive the same benefits as my siblings and me by way of a Catholic education.
Thank you for joining me in support of the ACUE mission to serve our urban neighbors through Catholic education. I hope that like me, you have been touched, blessed, by your involvement in such a meaningful ministry of our Church.
Yours gratefully in the Lord,

Father Leo Schmidt and Father Ray Hartman are dearly loved within our community having each minis-
tered to the faithful of the Diocese for decades. Fr. Schmidt was ordained in June 1956 and Fr. Hartman in
June 1968. They both served as ACUE Pastors until their recent retirements. Fr. Schmidt was assigned to
St. Augustine, Covington, in 1992 and Fr. Hartman to Mother of God in 2001. As ACUE Pastors, they offered
their confidence and support to our organization and the ACUE schools. Both continue to be very dedicated
to the residents of the urban areas. We are most grateful and wish them all the best in their retirement.
Many blessings to them both!

The ACUE Mission Statement The Urban Schools are a vital mission of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Covington. These Schools provide an exemplary Christ-
centered moral and academic education to the young and provide a foundation that contributes to present and future solidarity and quality
of life in the urban areas of Northern Kentucky.
Dear Friends,
The outpouring of support for our ACUE mission has been phenomenal. Thankful, the theme of this year’s Honor Roll is therefore most fitting.
Once again, our very kind and generous donors and volunteers have helped ACUE achieve another record breaking year of fundraising. The 2014-2015 ACUE Annual Appeal led by Mr. Paul Smith and Judge Ralph Drees raised over $700,000 in tuition assistance, a new milestone by more than $100,000.
Mr. Smith, General Chair of the Appeal, worked tirelessly to ensure that the Appeal was a success for the children we serve. This dedication prompted him to return as chair for yet another year feeling his work was not yet complete. We thank him and predict that the 2015-2016 Appeal will also reach new heights.
As the Honorary Chair of the leadership phase of the 2014-2015 Appeal, Judge Drees was not expected to take an active role in solicitation, and yet he made several key donor calls on our behalf. Judge and Mrs. Drees had provided a remarkable example for their peers having made a $250,000 commitment over five years to ACUE.
We are extremely grateful to both Mr. Smith and Judge Drees for their dedication. Our mission is considerably stronger as a result of their leadership.
Aside from our major contributors, ACUE has also come to depend on the growing grassroot support that has provided smaller, but certainly significant, contributions by others who believe in our ministry. Every gift, large and small, makes a difference for our students.
Thank you for the blessing of your association with our ministry, bringing Christ the Teacher to our students of the urban areas. We are thankful for you, one and all.
Yours in Catholic education,

US Bank, Northern Kentucky Market, has assisted the ACUE Appeal through leadership, volunteerism and its financial as well as in-kind contributions. Kathy Telles, assistant to Market President, Dan Groneck, offered invaluable assistance to the major gift solicitations in both the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 Annual Appeals by tracking the call reports of our dedicated volunteers, one of whom was her boss and several others who were young executives at the Bank. Kathy both collected the feedback of our volunteers and then provided weekly reports to those managing the appeal. Thank you, Kathy, for your tremendous help!

Leadership Gifts Committee
The ACUE schools have received long-time support from a number of organizations. The Corporex Companies, LLC
and The RC Durr Foundation, Inc. certainly come to mind as do several others. Among them, we would like to rec-
ognize two organizations whose continued support has meant a great deal to ACUE and especially our students
and families.
Thankful for Our Donors
Organizations and Foundations
We would like to recognize Kerry Toyota Scion and Mark Stein, General Manager, for
their ongoing assistance. In 2011-2012, as we initiated our first formal corporate appeal,
not only did Mark’s organization become ACUE’s first contributor, they secured a
matching gift from Toyota as well. The Kerry Toyota Scion Family has been with us each
year since, always happy to support the important ACUE mission.
Long before ACUE established a leadership society for donors, Libby, Persyck and
Kathman, Inc. was leading the way in support of Catholic urban elementary education.
Initially, LPK provided financial support, but this past year they added in-kind design ser-
vices. For example, special design elements featured on the cover of this Honor Roll were
provided by LPK interns with oversight from John Kuchenmeister, Creative Director, and
Lizzie Keister, Project Manager. This in-kind assistance helped stretch the ACUE budget
while allowing us to recognize our donor contributions, every one of which makes a
difference for the children we serve.
Leadership We want to thank our leadership foundation and corporate contributors who gave $1,000 or more to the 2014-2015 Appeal. Foundation and corporate support of ACUE is also growing, a wonderful trend to help sustain our mission.

Mr. and Mrs. William P. Butler are true champions of Catholic urban elementary education. The Butlers have not only contributed financially to ACUE through The Butler Foundation and Corporex, they have encouraged others to invest in the ministry.
Although they had contributed significantly for some years, beginning in 2012, with the advent of our first ACUE Corporate Appeal, they offered a $25,000 challenge grant for new and increased gifts. The Butler Foundation and Corporex continued to offer their matching grant for each of the next three years, which has helped ACUE receive approximately $600,000 in leadership gifts in this year alone from not only corporations, but also individuals.
The Butlers have also contributed significantly in the past to our ACUE schools where capital needs are concerned, so their support of the Annual Appeal is just the beginning of the story.
In early September, Mr. and Mrs. Butler visited our Holy Family School located on 16th St. in Covington. This school has an 85% poverty rate among its students this year.
As the Butlers arrived at the school, they were led to the kindergarten classroom where the children were gathered in a circle on the floor. Mrs. Butler immediately joined the children taking

a place next to them on the carpet, where she began to converse with them and assist them with their puzzle.
As the Butlers concluded their visit to the school, Mr. Butler, now speaking to not only kindergartners but also the school’s 1st and 2nd graders, told the children that he had grown up in their neighborhood. He went to a Catholic school that was located not far from Holy Family. His message to them was one of hope, and it re-flected the power and the meaning of a Catholic education. Before he was able to finish, one little girl reached up and gave him a big hug to which he reciprocated. For their selfless example of faith, their dedication to Catholic urban elementary education and for providing a hopeful future for the students, families and communities of our urban areas, Bishop Foys, the Department of
Catholic Schools and the Alliance for Catholic Urban Education were honored to present the Butlers with the 2015 FAITH, HOPE and INSPIRATION AWARD. We thank the Butlers sincerely for the impact they have had on our ministry and the children we are so blessed to serve.
This past year, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Yung made the largest single gift in ACUE history of more than $250,000 over 5 years. Mr. Yung, who is chair-man and CEO of Columbia Sussex and grew up in Bellevue, one of our ACUE communities, has said of ACUE, “This is the first charity brought to me that makes a lot of sense and will do a lot of good.” We are grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Yung for their tremendous gen-erosity. Through it, they will “do a lot of good.” They are to be commended for their thoughtful, selfless example. Also to be recognized are Mr. Charles and Mrs. Julie Geisen Scheper, who also made a significant commit-ment to ACUE. The Schepers are truly committed to the welfare of children, especially those in the urban areas. This past year, they made a wonderful contribution to the children of our Catholic urban elementary schools through a five-year $50,000 pledge to ACUE.

The Lesson Revisited
Over the past year, we enjoyed delivering canvas reprints
of The Lesson by Sister Mary Emmanuel Pieper, OSB. The
reprints were commissioned by Bill and Jean Zeck as gifts
from Bishop Foys to the inaugural members of the ACUE
Christ the Teacher Society. Prints were also provided to
each of the ACUE schools. We thought it would be fun to
see how those prints were put to use. We found them in
some very special places.
The print belonging to Susan Panoushek can be found in her second
grade classroom at Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Burlington.
Here she is joined by her niece, Georgia Drees, and nephews, Tad and
Mitchel Drees as well as Weston and Cooper Jones, all students at Im-
maculate Heart of Mary School. In 2014, Bishop Foys gifted the original
painting of The Lesson to Susan’s parents and the children’s grandpar-
ents, Ralph and Irma Drees. The painting was commissioned by the
Zecks as a way to further honor the recipients of ACUE’s first annual
Faith, Hope and Inspiration Award.
The image of Christ the Teacher greets students, staff and
visitors at each of our ACUE schools. Pictured here is Holy
Trinity School Principal, James Hubbard, in his Newport
campus office with a few of his junior high students. Holy
Trinity School serves several urban communities of Camp-
bell County with an elementary school in Bellevue and a
junior high in Newport.
