Overview

IBM® Spectrum Connect is a centralized server system that consolidates a range ofIBM storage provisioning, automation, and monitoring solutions through a unifiedstorage management interface.

IBM Spectrum Connect provides a single server backend location and enablescentralized management of IBM storage resources for different virtualization andcloud platforms.

The following solution components, referred to as interfaces, are supported by thesoftware package:v IBM Storage Provider for VMware VASA – Improves the ability to monitor and

automate storage-related operations on VMware platforms. This includessupport for VASA 2.0 and virtual volumes. In addition, it uses Storage PolicyBased Management (SPBM) technology for optimizing the virtual machineprovisioning process.

v IBM Storage Enhancements for VMware vSphere Web Client – Integrate intothe VMware vSphere Web Client platform and enable VMware administrators toindependently and centrally manage their storage resources on IBM storagesystems.

v IBM Storage Plug-in for VMware vRealize Orchestrator – Allows VMwareadministrators to include IBM discovery and provisioning in their vRealizeOrchestrator automation workflows.

v IBM Storage Management Pack for VMware vRealize Operations Manager –Allows VMware administrators to obtain comprehensive monitoring informationabout the IBM storage resources that are utilized in their virtualized cloudenvironment.

v IBM Storage Enabler for Containers – Provisions storage volumes from anexternal IBM storage to container frameworks. Storage provisioning can be fullyautomatized with additional support of cluster orchestration systems toautomatically deploy, scale and manage containerized applications.

v IBM Storage Automation Plug-in for PowerShell – Runs cmdlets forprovisioning and management of the IBM FlashSystem A9000 and A9000Rstorage systems and IBM Spectrum Virtualize Family products.

Note: IBM Storage Automation Plug-in for PowerShell and IBM Storage Enablerfor Containers are not provided as an integral part of the Spectrum Connectpackage and must be installed separately.

Improved event log management for IBM Spectrum Virtualizestorage systems

Version 3.6.0 improves event population mechanism for the log files maintained byIBM Spectrum Virtualize Family storage systems.

VMware vROps (7.0) support

Version 3.6.0 introduces support for version 7.0 of VMware vRealize OperationManager. This update improves plugin performance, introduces more efficientcapacity management and simplifies dashboard creation and administration.

VMware vRO (7.4) support

Version 3.6.0 adds support for version 7.4 of VMware vRealize Operation Manager,introducing multi-tenancy feature and updating the UI.

SCB-4176 Fixed: Cannot rename a volume if its name starts with anumber.

SCB-5204 Fixed: A VM with the vvol-no-requirement policy, usinga thin-provisioned disk cannot be created on aVVol-based datastore. In this case, the datastore uses astorage space, containing both a thick- andthin-provisioned services with the thick service set as adefault one for the VVol container.

SCB-5431 Fixed: If a vCenter interface is disconnected from aSpectrum Connect server, and then reconnected to itsanother instance, the old connectivity remains visible invSphere Web Client.

SCB-5456 Fixed: A volume cannot be created via vSphere WebClient or vRO, if the volume uses a service withoutmirrored capability, but with paired storage resourcesattached to it.

SCB-5470 Fixed: Population of the Spectrum Virtualize storagesystem fails if the storage systems have NPIV enabled.

LimitationsAs opposed to known issues, limitations are functionality restrictions that are partof the predefined system design and capabilities in a particular version.

Data copying limitation

To prevent unauthorized copying, data transfer between virtual machines is subjectto the following limitation:v When a virtual machine with Spectrum Connect installation is cloned from

another VM or from a template, Spectrum Connect fails to start, indicating thedatabase corruption. You can use Spectrum Connect backup and restorefunctionality to copy the application data to new VMs.

IBM Enabler for Containers does not support volume migrationusing IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility

IBM Enabler for Containers does not support volume migration using IBMHyper-Scale Mobility for the storage volumes utilized by Kubernetes clusters.

Known issuesThis section details the known issues in version 3.6.0 of IBM Spectrum Connectand its solution components, along with possible solutions or workarounds (ifavailable).

The following severity levels apply to known issues:v HIPER – High Impact Pervasive. A critical issue that IBM has either fixed or

plans to fix promptly. Requires immediate customer attention or code upgrade.v High Impact – Potentially irrecoverable error that might impact data or access to

data in rare cases or specific situations/configurations.v Moderate – Limited functionality issue and/or performance issue with a

noticeable effect.v Service – Non-disruptive recoverable error that can be resolved through a

workaround.v Low – Low-impact usability-related issue.

Important:

v The issues listed below apply to version 3.6.0 or earlier versions. As long as anewer version has not yet been released, a newer release notes edition forversion 3.6.0 might be issued to provide a more updated list of known issuesand workarounds.

v When a newer version is released for general availability, the release notes ofversion 3.6.0 will no longer be updated. Accordingly, check the release notes ofthe newer version to learn whether any newly discovered issues affect version3.6.0 or whether the newer version resolves any of the issues listed below.

Moderate When the XIV storage credentials are of an XIVdomain administrator (supported by XIVmicrocode version 11.5 or later), volume mappingmight return the 'LUN already in use' errormessage.

This occurs if the LUN number is alreadyassociated with a volume outside of the XIVdomain.

Currently there is no solution or workaround forthis limitation.


Moderate Volumes that were migrated from an XIV storagearray (A) to another XIV storage array (B) usingHyper-Scale Mobility (online volume migration)might not be manageable.

This specifically occurs if the volumes on theoriginal XIV storage array (A) are deleted from thestorage array (A), and then the same volume IDsare reused on that storage array (A).

If both XIV systems (A and B) are connected to thesame Spectrum Connect and this situation occurs,it prevents the management of these volumesthrough Spectrum Connect.



Moderate Spectrum Connect fails to lock out a storageadmin user account with LDAP credentials afteran unsuccessful login attempt.



Moderate Upgrading Spectrum Accelerate via RESful API bya user with insufficient access level may fail. Thisincomplete procedure prevents further upgradeattempts, using RESTful API.

To avoid this issue, verify that the user performingthe Spectrum Accelerate upgrade has sufficientaccess level for completing the task.


Moderate Failure to resolve a DNS hostname may result inthe rabbitmq process malfunction.

To avoid this issue, verify that the SpectrumConnect DNS hostname can be resolved.

Moderate Thin-provisioned storage resources on IBMFlashSystem V9000 storage systems cannot beattached to Spectrum Connect services withenabled space efficiency.



Moderate Changing user credentials for the Enabler forContainers interface does not change theauthentication token, until the token is deprecated.



Moderate LDAP configuration is excluded from the backupand restore process.

To resolve this issue, reconfigure the LDAP accessafter the Spectrum Connect is restored.


Moderate Snapshots of the volumes that were migrated,using HyperSwap® or Hyper-Scale mobility, mightnot appear in the vWC snapshot list.



Moderate A storage system that lost its connectivity to aSpectrum Connect instance, cannot be removedfrom the web UI.



Moderate User-defined credentials are not retained after thebackup and restore procedure. A restoredSpectrum Connect installation reverts to thedefault username and password, withoutinforming the user.

To resolve this issue, change the default usercredentials after system restore.


Moderate DS8000 storage systems with CKD volume aliasescannot be added to Spectrum Connect, as thesevolumes have no storage pools associated withthem.






Service Whenever a directory-based storage admin fails tolog in (from the Spectrum Connect side) to anystorage array that is in use, Spectrum Connectimmediately locks the storage admin user accountand all storage arrays become inaccessible on theSpectrum Connect side.

This is to prevent repeated login attempt failuresafter which the directory server blocks that useraccount.

In such a case, update the storage admincredentials on the storage array with which thelogin has failed. Alternatively, you can removethat specific storage array from Spectrum Connectand then reset the credentials.

You can find the relevant storage array bychecking the events.log log file. For example:Mar 26 13:50:01 ronend-sc1 ERROR ID:SC-0008 |Severity:ERROR | Parameters:reason=Logging in toarray 2810-214-MN65025 has failed with the providedcredentials.,user_name=ronenu | Message:Storage credentials foruser ronenu were disabled. Reason: Logging in toarray 2810-214-MN65025 has failed with the providedcredentials.


Service Disconnected storage array disappear from theSpectrum Connect web interface after the upgrade.

To avoid this issue, before performing upgrade,verify that all storage arrays are connected toSpectrum Connect properly.

Moderate Removing a vCenter interface from SpectrumConnect may cause unstable behavior of the vWCplug-in.

To resolve this issue, perform one of the followingprocedures, depending on the Spectrum Connectand vCenter deployment scenarios:

v If you remove a vCenter interface fromSpectrum Connect, restart the vSphere WebClient, before reconnecting the vCenter interfaceto the Spectrum Connect instance.

v If you uninstall Spectrum Connect, wait untilthe uninstallation process is completed, and thenrestart each vCenter server that was connectedto Spectrum Connect at the time of uninstall.

v If you upgrade Spectrum Connect, wait until theupgrade process is completed, and then restartall vSphere vWCs attached to the upgradedSpectrum Connect server.





Moderate When provisioning a new volume using vSphereWeb Client, the Max Provision Size of the newvolume is permanently set to 0. This results involume creation failure.

To avoid this issue, connect all vCenter servers inthe SSO to the same Spectrum Connect instance.


Moderate After upgrade to version 3.4.0, in rare cases,Spectrum Connect might lose connection with thevWC plug-in.

To resolve this issue, restart the web plug-inservice on the relevant vCenter server.

Service If a volume is deleted, using vSphere Web Client,but the deletion fails on the storage system, thevolume is removed from the vSphere Web Clientdisplay. In this case, the volume is successfullyunmapped from the host, but there is no indicationon the vSphere Web Client that the volume stillexists.

To avoid this issue, delete the volume from thestorage system directly.


Service vWC volume creation and mapping task may fail,if a source pool that exists on an XIV storagesystem within a domain, has been attached toservice created by the default Spectrum Controluser.

To avoid this issue, associate the default SpectrumConnect user with the storage array domain.


Service A volume being moved between two XIV storagesystems using IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility, cannot beunmapped in vWC from the ESXi host after thesource storage system enters the proxy mode.

To resolve this issue, remove volume mappingusing the XIV GUI.

Service Creating and mapping a volume on a SpectrumAccelerate Family product via the vWC plug-inmay fail if a storage resource is connected to a hostoutside of a storage system domain.

To avoid this situation, verify that all the hostsdefined on the vCenter are also defined on thestorage systems and are associated with thedomain. In addition, make sure that the defaultstorage credentials defined in Spectrum Connectbelong to the domain as well.


Service Creating and mapping a volume on a SpectrumAccelerate Family product via the vWC plug-inmay fail if ESXi LUNs used by the volumes do notbelong to any domain, while the SpectrumConnect storage credentials are associated with aspecific domain.

To avoid this situation, verify that volumes outsideof a domain are not mapped to the target host.


Service A connection session between Spectrum Connectand vCenter server remains open after SpectrumConnect has been restarted or the vCenter serverhas been removed and added again via theSpectrum Connect GUI. This results in multipleconcurrent connection sessions with different IDsbetween the servers.

To resolve this issue, manually remove theredundant session via the vSphere Web Client(Manage > Sessions > Terminate SelectedSessions).


Service Resizing a stretched volume on IBM SAN VolumeController can fail, if the two copies of the volumeare not synchronized.

To avoid this issue, wait for the synchronization tocomplete on storage system side. You can use theSVC lsvdisksyncprogress command to monitorsynchronization progress.





Service If a volume is mapped to an ESXi 6.5 host, the sizeof the volume under the IBM Storage Volumestab does not change after its extension.

To resolve this issue, rescan the host manually.


Service Creation of several volumes and their subsequentrenaming might fail in mid-process with an error,indicating insufficient memory. As a result, someof the volumes are created successfully, and someof them are not.



Low A volume, whose deletion fails, disappears fromthe volume list. The volume reappears in the listafter the next population.



Low If a combination of both iSCSI and FC initiatorport types is defined for an ESXi host, mappingvolumes to that ESXi host causes both iSCSI andFC to be used for those volumes.

To avoid this situation, use the storage systemmanagement tools to define only one activeprotocol type (iSCSI or FC) for the initiators ofeach ESXi host.


Low If a volume is mapped to two or more ESXi hoststhat are managed by more than one vCenterserver, volume operations fail.

To avoid this issue, do not map a specific volumeto ESXi hosts that are not managed by the samevCenter server.


Low When provisioning a volume on storage service forXIV storage systems with enabled compression, theprovisioning fails, if the volume size is below 51GB. The generated error message is not sufficientlyclear.

To avoid this situation, verify that the host isconnected to the vCenter server. If a disconnectedor non-responsive host is connected to a newserver, remove it from the original server to allowproper volume performance.


Low When a LUN is shared between several ESXi hosts,its number must be the same on all hosts.

To avoid this situation, verify that the shared LUNnumber is available for all hosts.


Low If a volume is shared between several datacenters,volume-related objects, such as a datastore or aVM that belong to other datacenters, are missingfrom the vWC.



Low When a disk is removed from a VM created on aVVol-based datastore, but not removed from thedatastore, the VM is still listed as a related objecton the VVol.



Low There is no indication of storage objects that existon a storage system outside of a domain availablefor a user certain storage credentials. As a result,such vWC actions as creating and mapping avolume fail if a volume with the same namealready exists on a storage system.

Moderate Pod becomes unresponsive, persisting in theContainerCreating status. An error indicating afailure to discover a new volume WWN, whilerunning the multipath -ll command, is stored inthe FlexVolume log. This log belongs to the node,where the pod was scheduled.
