AGC Presents- The Scholarships Awards Dinner for 2019 Mike McManus, Director of Engineering Construction & Industry Relations

Each year, the AGC's EGCA Scholarship Foundation quietly goes about its business of offering and awarding scholarships to deserving college students. Behind

the scenes is a flurry of activity involving organizing several college campuses to encourage candidates to complete an application as a first step. The Scholarship Committee then is assigned the duty to evaluate the applications, interview the student candidates, and make the tough decisions of awarding the 2019 winners. In past years, the annual scholarships were awarded to students enrolled in the SDSU J.R. Filanc Construction Engineering and Management Program and the Palomar Diesel Technology Program: three $3,000 scholarships to the SDSU students and two $1,500 scholarships for the Palomar students respectively. This year, The Foundation added two additional $1,500 scholarships to students enrolled in the Miramar Diesel Technology Program, and three $1,000 scholarships for Apprenticeship students at the completion of their first year in the program. The 2019 scholarship winners will be presented on August 15, 2019 at the Honoree and Scholarship Awards Mixer & Dinner. This year's event will be held at the San Diego Yacht Club, with the social hour starting at 4:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and awards program. This year's Honoree is Thomas L. Brown, President of Sierra Pacific West, Inc. Mr. Brown has been a longtime leader in the construction industry, not only in San Diego but

GIVING BACK

Making Dreams Come True with Make-A-Wish Ariale Montgomery, Balfour Beatty Construction - Marketing Coordinator "Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person." Balfour Beatty Construction teammates channeled their inner genie and teamed up with Make-a-Wish and AGC's Build & Serve Charitable Alliance to make a wish come true! The team started with a site walk in March for a backyard makeover for Wish Kid Miguel. About Miguel

Page 9: With Us - AGCSD2019/07/22  · Serve Charitable Alliance to make a wish come tr ue! The team started with a site walk in March for a backyard makeover for Wish Kid Miguel. About Miguel

Miguel is a 15-year-old boy with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. His favorite things include going to school, riding on the school bus and being included in activities. He loves jazz, listening to the music of Journey and hearing people talking around him. He is legally blind, therefore most of his sensory stimulation comes from sound, touch and reflections of light. Miguel thoroughly enjoys being included in conversations and having others be his "eyes" to describe what is going on around him. He rewards his conversation partners by clapping his hands and smiling in excitement. Miguel's Wish Miguel's family wished for a dedicated space for him to be included in activities and to use his gait trainer, a device that helps wheelchair-bound people stand, work their muscles and walk. Previously, Miguel did not have a safe space at home to use the device, so his family was transporting it to allow Miguel to use it in the parking lot of his doctor's office. Through AGC's relationship with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, AGC member Dave Shaw from Alvarez and Shaw volunteered his team to take on the concrete portion of the work, and Balfour Beatty volunteered to coordinate the shade structure and other finishing touches. Through the help of Paul Valdez, Kaitlin Kallal was able to coordinate the support of the following companies to give the project the finishing touches: USA Shade - made and donated custom shade cloth, installed on a Sunday with donated time from their whole crew: SoCal Coatings - painted lumber earlier in the week, donating paint and their time Rocky Coast Builders - donated and delivered all lumber and hardware Special thanks to the Balfour Beatty team: Kaitlin Kallal - Make-A-Wish Event coordinator Paul Valdez - Reached out to our trade partners for donated time and materials Dusan Selezan - Assisted with the design created a BIM model

Jesse Schmitt, Rick McElroy, Josh Purcell were integral to construction, with help from Abbas Ismail, Britani Harris, Ariale Montgomery and sister Jewel Montgomery. "I am proud of our team's engagement with the AGC's Build and Serve Committee, and the generous support of our trade partners in donated materials, equipment and labor," said Brian Cahill, president of buildings operations in California and Arizona. "Most importantly, I am impressed with the donation of personal time to dust off the tool belts, break a little sweat, and actually build this project."

With construction now complete, Miguel has an open area to use his gait trainer and gain more mobility, engage in the outdoors, and spend time with his family doing everyday activities that

prior to the build project, were difficult for the family to manage. Thank you to the entire team for all your work in making Miguel's wish come true!

If your company would like to assist with Make-A-Wish construction related projects, please contact Marcy Knopman (858) 731-8162.
