9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Check-In for all First-Year and New Students Early-Fielding HallPlease pick up your room key outside of Graham-Lees Hall on Washington Street. Turn over your key to your family, and our W&L upper-division students will assist with the move-in process while you proceed across the street to Early-Fielding to receive your registration and orientation material. Within just a few minutes you will catch up with your family in your room to begin unpacking. All students are required to check-in, including Leading Edge participants, pre-season athletes, transfers and international students. Be prepared—it’s a W&L tradition that it rains either on Check-in day or Commencement day.

11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Meat and Greet (And Veggie Burgers Too!) Baker-Davis-Gilliam QuadCompliments of W&L’s Orientation Committee Take a break from the heat and enjoy some cool refreshments, hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers and salads with your family in the Quad. 2:00 p.m. President’s Welcome to Parents Lenfest Center, Keller TheaterPresident Ken Ruscio ‘76 and Vice-President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Sidney Evans will share their thoughts and unique perspectives about University life with parents of new students. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be available throughout the meeting.

5:00 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. First-Year Student Dinner Evans Dining HallNew students and their families are invited to experience dinner at the old “D-Hall.” Join us for a glimpse of W&L dining cuisine and a taste of what you can expect during the academic year.

7:00 p.m. First-Year Meeting with Resident Advisers Location posted on your hallFirst-year resident advisers meet with their hall residents to review policies, establish certain guidelines, provide basic information, and answer questions about life at W&L. Be sure to change into comfortable clothing for the next event.

9:00 p.m. - Midnight SODALIS Wilson Field‘Sodalis’ is the Latin word meaning ‘solidarity’ or ‘unity’ among individuals in a community. SODALIS is a new tradition on the orientation schedule—a program planned and run by our upper-division students to welcome you into our unique community of honor and integrity. Lace up your tennis shoes and join us for an evening of team building unlike anything you’ve experienced. Everyone has a role to play in order to guarantee team success. Tonight we celebrate your character, your accomplishments, and the commonalities that have brought you together here, at W&L.

9:00 a.m. – Noon Students are encouraged to attend religious services at their chosen place of worship. Local faith-community leaders will be available at Check-in on Saturday to share various religious options with students.

12:30 p.m. President’s Welcome to New Students Lee ChapelPresident Ken Ruscio ’76, Vice-President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Sidney Evans, and Assistant Dean for First-Year Experience Jason Rodocker will offer their insights about University Life to the Class of 2016. Men are required to wear coat and tie; women are required to wear a skirt, slacks or a dress. Cellular telephones should be turned off in Lee Chapel.

1:00 p.m. Student Governance Orientation Lee ChapelStudent-run campus governance is integral to student life at W&L. The Executive Committee (EC) gains its authority through the Board of Trustees and manages the University Honor System. The Student Judicial Council (SJC) is charged by the faculty under the University Bylaws to enforce standards of civility and appropriate conduct that fall outside the Honor System. The Student-Faculty Hearing Board (SFHB) hears and judges cases dealing with sexual misconduct, discrimination or harassment involving W&L students. Students will also have an opportunity to hear from Residential Life leadership.

2:00 p.m. First-Year Student–Only Class Meeting Evans Dining HallMeet fellow first-years in the old “D-Hall” to complete a survey that is part of W&L’s efforts to understand and improve student learning. Remember to bring your W&L University card; you will need your student ID number to complete the survey. Pencils will be provided.

If you have a conflict with a placement test, please notify Assistant Dean for First-Year Experience Jason Rodocker ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.Math Placement Test Robinson Hall, Room 6This test is designed to aid the Mathematics Department in identifying students qualified for placement in courses beyond Calculus I (Math 101). Take this test only if ALL of the following apply:

• You have completed at least a half-year of calculus (not necessarily an AP course).

• You do not have transfer credit or Advanced Standing placement for calculus, and you have not taken either of the AP calculus exams or the IB HL mathematics exam.

• You wish to be placed in a calculus course more advanced than Calculus I.You should be present when the test begins at 3:30 p.m. and it lasts approximately an hour. For questions please contact Department Head, Professor Greg Dresden ([email protected]) or test administrator, Professor Alan McRae ([email protected]). 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.Latin and Ancient Greek Placement Examination Robinson Hall, Room 7All incoming students with academic experience in Latin who intend to take Latin at the college level, including students with AP credit, must take the Latin placement test. You should be present when the test begins at 3:30 p.m. and it lasts approximately an hour. Students with academic experience in Greek should meet with Department Head, Professor Miriam Carlisle ([email protected]) immediately prior to or following the Latin exam to be placed in the appropriate level of Greek study. 3:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.German Placement Test Tucker Hall, Room 406BFor those students who intend to continue studying German. You should be present when the test begins at 3:30 p.m. and it lasts approximately 75 minutes. For questions please contact Department Head, Professor Roger Crockett ([email protected]). Russian Placement Students interested in studying Russian should contact Instructor Greta McCaughrin ([email protected]) as soon as possible, no later than 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 2. 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. ThinkFast Lenfest Center, Keller Theater ThinkFast is a multi-award winning, totally interactive, audience-responsive trivia game show. Its special recipe is simple; in addition to an energetic host and elaborate staging, an entertaining mixture of audio and video clips are integrated with trivia relating to current events, popular TV shows, movies, and current pop music. The ThinkFast Challenge will also include trivia that non-intrusively reinforces messages of prevention, responsibility, and awareness. ThinkFast is a high-action, high-speed game and participants are encouraged to contribute their energy to win cool prizes!

3:30 p.m. Registration: Pick Your First Course Login to WebAdvisorUsing your placement test results, curricular information from the faculty on the University Registrar’s website, and the registration information from Monday, you will register for a single preferred course for fall term. Help is available from your RA and from the University Registrar’s staff at [email protected], by phone at (540) 458-8455, and in the University Registrar’s office in Early-Fielding. You will complete your schedule (total of at least 12 credits) with your adviser on Wednesday morning.
