Downloading New Controller Code

1. Go to Commands > Download File to download different types of files to the controller via TFTP or FTP.

2. In the Server Details section, include the TFTP/FTP server and filename details.

AP Pre-Image Download

The Cisco WLC limits the number of concurrent AP image downloads.

It takes approximately 24 minutes to upgrade 100 APs on a Cisco 4400 Series WLC:

– Time to download the AP Image

– Time to boot the AP

Most CAPWAP APs can download and store more than one image in flash.

– Each image is typically 4-5MB.

– Most APs have at least 16MB of flash memory.

Through pre-image download, the upgraded image on the AP can be loaded without causing the AP to reload.

After the APs have received and stored the upgrade image:

– The controller and APs can be rebooted simultaneously.

– The APs can join controller without initiating an image download phase.

Upgrading a Controller without Pre-Image Download

A. Controller reboots to run the new image.

B. AP discovers and joins the controller.

C. AP downloads the new image from controller.

D. AP reboots.

E. AP rediscovers and rejoins the controller.

Total network downtime to upgrade = A + B + C + D + E

Upgrading a Controller with Pre-Image Download

A. Controller loads the new image, but does not

reload yet.

B. Controller instructs AP to pre-download and save

the new image in flash.

C. AP downloads the new image from controller.

D. AP and controller reboot simultaneously.

Total network downtime to upgrade = D + E

D. Controller instructs AP to reboot and controller

resets itself.

E. AP rediscovers and rejoins the controller.

AP Pre-Image Download—Download Image to Controller

1. Go to Commands > Download File and download a new code image to the controller.

2. Do not reboot the controller yet.

AP Pre-Image Download—Verify Images on Controller

• Shows the new image as the active image for the next reload.

• Set the backup image (7.0.85.123) to be the active image.

• In case of power outage or some other problem, if the controller reloads before the APs have been upgraded, the old image will still be loaded.

AP Pre-Image Download—Initiate Pre-download to APs

• The Wireless > All APs list shows the APs are still on the old version

• Clicking on the detail for an AP shows that Pre-Image Download has not been started

AP Pre-Image Download—Initiate Pre-download to APs

• Wireless > Global Configuration to cause the Primary (or Backup) image to be pre-downloaded to all APs

• AP details shows that Predownloading is in progress

AP Pre-Image Download—Pre-downloading Complete

• Pre-downloading has finished and 7.0.94.144 is now the backup image for all APs.

AP Pre-Image Download—Resetting the Controller and APs

• Reboot the controller:

– Immediately

– At a particular date and time

– In a certain time from now

Image > Interchange changes the active image back to the Primary image

Verify Controller and AP Versions

The controller is now running version 7.0.94.144

The APs are all now running version 7.0.94.144 as their Primary SW version
