Women worldwide facerampant violence: UN
United Nations (United States) (AFP) Women worldwide livelonger lives and are more educated than at any time in the past 20years, but more than a third have been victims of violence, a UNreport said Tuesday.
The findings are contained in "The World's Women," a fiveyearstudy providing an uptodate, global picture of the progress ofwomen and girls on critical issues in their lives.
The sweeping study, the sixth to be released by the UnitedNations, includes new data on women's unpaid work and onviolence against women, an issue that was not even monitored 20years ago, said researcher Francesca Grum.
Figures from 102 countries, the highest number surveyed thus far,showed that more than a third of women have been victim ofphysical or sexual violence at some point in their lives.
"Violence against women is present everywhere. It's really aglobal concern," said Grum.
Worldwide, two out of three familyrelated homicides targetwomen, the study showed.
The high prevalence of violence is matched by an equallypervasive silence, with victims still reluctant to confide to anyoneabout their ordeal.

found that fewerthan 40 percent ofvictims will breakthe silence butthey will talk tofriends or family,instead of policeor social services.
Fewer than 10percent will go tothe police.
On a brighternote, the report found that attitudes toward violence were startingto change in nearly all countries where information on the problemwas available.
The level of acceptance of "wifebeating" decreases over time aspublic awareness rises, the report said.
At least 119 countries have passed laws on domestic violence,125 have laws addressing sexual harassment and 52 have lawson marital rape.
Women work more
Women worldwide remain in lowpaying jobs, earning on averagebetween 70 and 90 percent of what men earn, the study found.
In developing countries, they spend on average three hours moreper day than men on household chores and caring for familymembers a figure that drops to two hours a day for women inwealthier countries.
The number of countries adopting legislation providing maternityand family benefits has grown.
Over half of all countries currently offer at least 14 weeks ofmaternity leave but these measures often exclude workers insuch sectors as agriculture or domestic work.
Women's life expectancy now reaches 72 globally, compared to68 for men.
