Whatever your interests or available time, there is a way for you to contribute to enhancing the club -- bring a snack to a general meeting or monthly coffee, sell raffle tickets at a general meeting, help on a committee, host your favorite montly activity. There are lots of ways to get involved, meet new people, and have fun! Please let me or any activity or board member know if you can help. PROFILE OF THE MONTH

BETTY REED Born in OK, I grew up in OK & KS. After receiving a BM degree in Piano Pedagogy from the U. of Okla., I married the love of my life nearly 53 years ago in a ceremony in which my college voice teacher sang, and my dear college piano teacher and longtime friend played the organ.

A year later we moved from Okla. City to Prairie Village, KS, a suburb of Kansas City, for Marvin to return to dental school to specialize in children’s dentistry. I taught music in a grade school & piano at home. During this time, one afternoon I watched from the school window as a tornado struck a housing area, flinging debris high into the sky. The wild drive home that day became etched in my memory forever. Wailing sirens encompassed me. Divided highways no longer existed as emergency vehicles raced to the scene via all lanes. In self-defense I abandoned my usual route & drove a spider’s web of back streets to our home.

One summer during a FL fishing trip, Marvin snared the sole catch of the day – a beautiful sailfish. If you would like a sailfish to display in your home, you may have it. First come,….. We loved KC. Marvin taught dentists aspiring to become pediatric dentists. Our two sons, now 44 and 46, were born. We moved to Memphis, when Marvin became Assoc. Dean of the UT dental school. I returned to college and received a MM in Music Theory. Marvin was an immeasurable help with our sons during those days. The last year in Memphis I taught piano at a private girls’ school. Students were released from class for piano lessons – a very different cry from today where classroom music struggles, often unsuccessfully, for the educational dollar against sports. Returning to KC, Marvin resumed his former position as head of pedodontics at Children’s Mercy Hospital. I joined the Leawood Women’s Club, an antique study group. I took many courses through the extensive Art Ministry program at church – picture framing, tole-painting, egg-decorating, making crèche dolls, and braiding a 5 x 8’ rug. Soon I knew I didn’t like water color and I couldn’t work with stained glass (the sound & smell) or pottery (the feel of the clay). We were active in the Partners of the Americas program that linked KS & Paraguay together. As a result, in 1978 and again in 1981 we spent three weeks in Asuncion, Paraguay, while Marvin taught pedodontics to the students, practicing dentists and dental faculty. We moved to Williamsburg for 18 months before Marvin came here to work at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs in the central office of dentistry. He retired in 1998. Since our two sons were here establishing themselves with families and jobs, we decided to retire here. My current passions? Family and friends, teaching piano, the performance arts, travelling, studying German with Brooke Nelson (Sigrid’s husband), learning about antiques (especially Flow Blue), and following figure skating. A former member of this club who moved away was responsible for turning my lifelong dream of watching figure skating at the Olympics into reality in 2010 when they were in Vancouver. I cherish the WCGR friendships made while serving several years as an officer and chair of Destination Dining. I strongly urge each new member to attend activities of special interest regularly, find a niche, and serve the club. The rewards? Life-long friends!
