Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the 2004-05 season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-10 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In ad-dition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary’s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 16, 15, and 13-game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College (1998-2003). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was rec-ognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 79-65, including a 20-10 record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in 2002-03. Buscaglia’s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in 2002-03 as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan’s 20-10 overall record was also the best in school history. In 2001-02 he guided the jaspers to an 18-10 overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Busca-glia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from 1990-98 and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in 1991-92, Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tourna-ment championships in 1992 and 1994. In 1994-95, Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regular-season title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tour-nament finals in 1997. In each of Buffalo’s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and 1996. Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior Col-lege, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from 1977-90 he amassed a record of 249-62. During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships (1982-90), eight straight regular season conference championships (1982-90) and eight straight National Tournament appearances (1982-90). In 1988-89 his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia’s squad reached the National Junior College Ath-letic Association National Tournament eight straight seasons from 1982-83 to 1989-90, with the 1889-90 team reaching the NJCAA National Tournament final six. He is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. Buscaglia also has coaching experience with USA Basket-ball, having served as an assistant coach at the 1992 Summer Olympic Festival and as a Trial Coach at the 1989 Summer Olympic Festival. From 1986-93, Buscaglia served as head western division coach of the Empire State Games, helping coach the top players in the state to numerous medals. Over his career, Buscaglia has won eight conference titles at the Division I level and has averaged over 19 victories per year. In his 20 years as a Division I head coach, Buscaglia has guided his teams to winning seasons in 11 of them. He also owns 14 Coach of the Year honors. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master’s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius. In 1980, Buscaglia received a Master’s Degree in business education from the State Univer-sity of New York College at Buffalo. Buscaglia, a proud father and grandfather, has a son Char-lie, who is associate head coach of the Colonials, and a daugh-ter, Deanna. Deanna resides in Lancaster, N.Y. with her hus-band Mark and their children Paityn (7), Shane (5) and Eva (2).

The 2011-12 Robert Morris University women’s basketball team is led by 32-year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called,

is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went 1-26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in 2007. One season later, and with just three returning letterwin-ners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris re-turned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20-win season, posting a record of 23-10, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through De-cember 31, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In 2009-10, his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 23-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tu-telage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference his-tory to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace’s award marked the third-time a Buscaglia player earned the conference’s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in 2007-08 on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive mo-tion offense to take advantage of RMU’s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women’s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 23rd in the nation averaging 73.0 points per game, finished 39th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (39.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44.3 percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation’s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 126 and averaged 24.7 points per con-test. The 2006-07 Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tour-nament since 1991 while putting together a record of 24-8. The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 15-3 record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a 68-66 win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to 13 national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 23-9 mark in 2009-10. His team’s 20-10 mark in 2004-05 with his first recruiting class improved upon a 3-24 record the sea-son before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Along the way, Buscaglia tallied his 600th career head coaching victory and currently boosts an overall coaching record of 613-278. Buscaglia’s teams own five of the seven 20-win seasons and are the only squads to win 20-plus games in back-to-back seasons since the program’s inception in 1977. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire sea-son due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the con-ference semifinals in 2005-06, one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and

LAST TIME OUTThe Robert Morris University women’s basketball team forced Kent State into 36 turnovers during a 78-44 rout of the Golden Flashes Tuesday night at the Charles L. Sewall Center in Moon Township, Pa. The Colonials converted those 36 turnovers into 44 points to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / Barking Abbey (English National Team)) narrowly missed out on a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down nine rebounds. The senior went 7-of-11 from the floor.

Junior guard Briannica Tye (Aurora, Ill. / West Aurora (Mineral Area)) finished with a game-high 18 points hitting 7-of-11 shots. She added four assists and six steals to her line. Junior April Williams (Bronx, N.Y. / Murry Bergtraum (Monroe College)) once again impressed off the bench. She scored 15 points, had six steals and added two assists while burying three three-pointers.

The Golden Flashes (0-2) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first minute of play. Junior Josette Campbell’s (London, England / Notre Dame Prep (Northwest Florida State)) trifecta started a 9-0 RMU run that lasted two minutes.

After trading baskets, freshman Romane Dessacs (Péchabou, France / Bellevue) buried the first three-pointer of her career. Her basket broke open a 13-13 tie and started a 28-6 RMU run that lasted the final 12 minutes of the first half.

The Golden Flashes turned the ball over 12 times during that span and the Colonials took advantage, finishing the first half with 31 points off turnovers. Williams hit a pair of three balls in the final 1:24 and Durojaye capped off the half with a lay-up on a good look from Dessacs as RMU carried a 44-19 lead into the break.

Robert Morris had 15 offensive rebounds in the opening frame, equaling the total number of boards for the visiting Golden Flashes. Tye had 10 point in the first 20 minutes.

The Colonials held the lead throughout the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 35 points on Dessacs second trey of the contest with 10:35 to play. Freshman Catherine Matthews (Barrington, R.I. / Barrington) scored her first career points with 31 second left, splashing a three-pointer from the right corner to make the final score 78-44.

Robert Morris shot 37.0 percent (27-73) from the floor, taking 29 more shots than Kent State, and managed once again to shoot better from three-pointer range, 42.9 percent (9-21), than from inside the arc (18-52, 34.6 percent). The Colonials assisted on 20 of their 27 baskets and held a 48-34 rebounding advantage.

Kent State’s Trisha Krewson tied for game-high scoring honors with 18 points, hitting 5-of-10 from the floor, including three three-pointers, and added eight rebounds and three steals. She was the only Golden Flashes player to reach double-digits.

WHO WAS ROBERT MORRIS?

The “Financier of the American Revolution.” He isn’t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies’ bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded.

Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing — often using his personal credit — to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. He died in Philadelphia on May 8, 1806.
