WOODLAND ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER December 13, 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dates to Remember Dec. 22 - 12:00 pm release Dec. 25 - Jan 1 - No School (Classes re resume on January 2nd) Jan. 12 - Spirit Day - wear your comfy clothes or pajamas Jan. 12 - Family Movie Night Jan. 12 - 2:00 pm dismissal The Kimberly Area School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, naonal origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital status, parental status, sexual orien- taon, sex, (including transgender status, change of sex or gen- der identy), or physical, mental, emoonal, or learning disabil- ity ("Protected Classes") in any of its student program and acvies. Dear Woodland Families! December is here and that means we are well on our way towards the holiday season! As I shared last month, the progress we are seeing from your children is certainly outstanding, and I hope you can see it too when they share their learning with you at home. Thank you again for allowing us to teach your children each day. As we approach the holiday season, I know I will continue reflecting on their great learning so that we can jump right into the new year with continued success. This month is going to go fast and I am hoping for green grass to stay, and the snow to stay away! I enjoyed seeing all of you at our Parent/Teacher Conferences a few weeks ago. If we were not able to connect and say hello, please be sure to stop by sometime when picking up your kids, watching a concert, or attending a PTO event. I always appreciate the opportunities to talk with parents and say hello. Parent/Teacher Conferences offer an opportunity to talk in person, about the growth of your children. Should you have follow-up questions or comments after conferences, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher. We value this communication as together, we can ensure that your children’s needs are being met. Beyond the math and literacy instruction, we are also proud of our learning in physical education, music, art, and Life Skills classes. I encour- age you to also ask your children about what they are learning in these “specials” classes as they are an integral part to their education. We are proud of the well-rounded education that kids are getting at Woodland. Beyond the classroom learning, we have a lot of other exciting things happening at our school. Students in Grades 1 and 2 had their holiday concert on December 7th and it was a won- derful performance. Grades 5K, 3, and 4 do not have a performance until Spring and more infor- mation will be coming out on those concerts later in the year. On December 22nd we have our first “Trading Post Day” in which students will be able to spend their “Paw Points” from the year. These “Paw Points” are part of our PBIS Framework, also known as The Woodland Way. We will contin- ue to emphasize our community values at Woodland, and hope that these values are making their way out of the classrooms for our children as well. Connued on Page Two

As you know, our teachers are constantly studying and adjusting to meet the needs of your chil-dren. That philosophy will remain true at Woodland, as it is our way of continually improving what we do for your children. In this newsletter you will see a formal letter with a description of our most recent School Report Card. As you can see from that letter, Woodland Elementary School received a “Significantly Exceeds Expectations” from the Department of Public Instruction. We are proud of this as it is one of many indicators of student achievement at Woodland. I encour-age you to view the links in the letter for more information on the Wisconsin State Report Cards.

In closing, this is the time of year when my family reflects on all that we are thankful for. Jill, Abi-gail, Michael, and I continue to be thankful that we are part of the Woodland community, and the Kimberly Area School District. Thank you to all of you for being part of our strong partner-ship. As always, my door is open and I welcome you to stop by, email, or call anytime that you have questions, comments, or concerns. Take care and happy holidays to you and your family!

Sincerely,

Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL CONTINUED

12:00 PM NOON RELEASE & HOLIDAY BREAK

THANK YOU!

A great big thank you to the Woodland PTO and all of the par-

ents that contributed to our teachers’ dinner during parent/

teacher conferences. There were lots of delicious soups, sand-

wiches, salads and goodies. The generosity of the Woodland

Community is overwhelming!

Elementary students will be released at 12:00 pm

on Friday, December 22nd. There will be no school

starting Monday, December 25th through Monday,

January 1st. Classes resume on Tuesday, January

2nd. The Woodland Elementary Office will also be

closed during this time. Enjoy the holiday break!

BOOK SWAP

MUSIC NOTES

Mark your calendars! 3rd and 4th grade will be having their spring concert on Thursday, March 8th at 1:30

pm and 6:30 pm. 5K will be having their spring concert on Friday, March 9th

with times being announced in future notes.

Woodland Elementary School will be holding its next book swap on Wednesday, December 20th. A book swap is an event where students bring in a used book to donate and they get to

take a “new to them” book home to keep. This is an optional activity. Volunteers are needed to help make this happen. Please click here to sign up to help on December 20th. Thank you!

During the winter months, the following outerwear is expected for our students during re-cess: Students are expected to wear all outerwear that comes from home (hats, gloves, mit-

tens, snowpants, boots, etc.) Students are expected to wear snowpants and boots if they intend to play on any snow-

covered area during recess. This includes the blacktop when it is snow-covered or wet. In the event that the black top is completely clear of snow and slush, stu-

dents then may be on this location in their "everyday" shoes. Students who do not have the appropriate outerwear during snow-covered

recess times will be asked to stay on the sidewalk. Thank you for your support with this. These expectations limit the wet pants, shoes, and socks that students get when not dressed appropriately, and helps them avoid having those wet clothes for the duration of the school day.

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER

Page 4: WOODLAND ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER December 13, 2017 …€¦ · NEWSLETTER December 13, 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dates to Remember Dec. 22 - 12:00 pm release Dec. 25 - Jan 1 -

Winter is here! If weather conditions dictate that there will be no school, a de-

cision to keep the schools closed is usually made by 6:30 AM. Parents with

students in school receive a direct call, text and/or email from our auto-call

system since that is the fastest way to communicate with thousands of par-

ents at one time. As a reminder: If you have a new phone number or email

address, please update your information in the Infinite Campus parent portal

or contact your school’s secretary to update the portal.

Announcements are also sent to local T.V. and radio stations, please tune to local stations such as these

rather than call the school directly: WAPL-105.7FM, WHBY-1150AM, WKFX-104.9FM, WEMI-91.9 FM,

WGEE-1360 AM, and WOZZ-93.5FM; and WBAY-TV2, WFRV-TV5, WGBA-TV26, and WLUK-FOX11. If

other school events, such as concerts or sporting events are also cancelled because of weather, they are

typically communicated through these stations as well.

The District’s website and Facebook page are not our primary way to communicate school closures, so we

ask parents to listen to the auto-call messages or tune in to the radio and T.V. stations listed for the timeli-

est updates. Please note that both Woodland Elementary and Intermediate offices will be closed on snow

days.

WEATHER CANCELLATIONS

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

Mark your calendars!

The Woodland PTO will be sponsoring a family movie night on Friday, January 12th. All students and their families are invited. More details are coming soon!

The Box Top competition will be starting after the holidays so keep saving those box tops! More information will be coming soon! Not only do the box tops earn money for the school, also the class bringing in the most box tops will win a prize! You can help make the counting easier by cutting them out on the dotted lines (the box top company is very strict about this) and put them in groups of 50 into Ziploc bags. Also, expired box tops are not eligible. Thank you!

Mark your calendars! On Friday, January 19th, the Lawrence Vikings

take on Aurora University and it is WOODLAND NIGHT! All students

and their families can get in free with a special ticket (which will be dis-

tributed closer to the date). We are on the look out for any hockey

players in our school. A few lucky Woodland Wolves will be invited on-

to the ice with Lawrence players during introductions.

Some of the team will come visit during lunch on Thursday, January

18th, to sign autographs and meet the kids. We will make announcements, and reminders

will be sent out closer to the date.

If you know of any hockey players who are interested in being put in the drawing for a

chance to go on the ice with the team, please let Mrs. Schaut know.

Woodland Elementary School Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D., Principal

December, 2017

Dear Woodland Elementary School Families, As part of its assessment and accountability system, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction creates a School Report Card for every publicly funded school in the state. The School Report Cards are intended to help all schools and districts utilize data related to student achievement to monitor their performance, and target their improvement efforts. On its Report Card, a school receives a score on a scale of 0 to 100 and one of five ratings based on that score. The ratings range from Fails to Meet Expectations to Significantly Exceeds Expectations. The school’s score and rating are primarily based on the school’s performance on statewide assessments in the 2016-17 school year. Woodland Elementary School’s Report Card score was 89.7 and this gave the school a rating of Significantly Exceeds Expectations. You can access Woodland Elementary School’s Report Card along with those for all of the district’s schools and a District Report Card on the DPI’s website: http://dpi.wi.gov/accountability/report-cards. Report Card scores as well as other district performance reports can also be accessed from the Kimberly Area School District’s website: http://www.kimberly.k12.wi.us/departments/about/performance-reports On the actual Report Card, parents can review the specific student performance information that is used to calculate the school’s overall score. Keep in mind that these Report Cards are just one source of information about our school. Our staff will use the data from our Report Card as part of our continuous improvement efforts during the current school year. If you have questions about the Report Card, feel free to contact me at anytime. Sincerely,

Timothy M. Doleysh, Ph.D. Principal

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Our Personal Safety Program (teaching children a variety of safety life skills) will be pre-sented during the month of January to 5K through 4th grade students.

Through these presentations and discussions, students will become more aware about the world around them, physical and sexual abuse, safety with strangers, and what to do when home alone. Students will learn basic age appropriate methods for protecting themselves against un-wanted physical touch and establishing a network of trusted adults that they can contact when needed.

As parents, we would ask you to make some time this month and discuss your personal views and rules on staying safe. Working together we can help children better protect them -selves. We will send additional information home as it is presented.

If would like to review the Personal Safety curriculum or have any questions, comments or con-cerns, please contact me at 730-0924.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Karoses
