A very warm welcome today to our
neighbours Woodlands for what is sure to be
a pivotal match in our season. Woodlands
have only lost once in the League since April – to Pudsey Congs - and are in excellent form.
EBCC are brimming with confidence following
a terrific weekend when we beat Pudsey St.
Lawrence in the League and Cleckheaton in the Priestley Cup. Both sides are at full strength, so today
should be a terrific contest. Good luck to both teams.
However, as I write, the forecast is not favourable and if
correct, the weather may have more than a bit-part to play. Last Sunday, the large crowd enjoyed a fantastic game of
cricket in the Priestley Cup semi-final EBCC v Cleckheaton.
Having won the toss and batted, Cleck will have been fairly
happy at 228 for 7. They lost a couple of early wickets, but
then made us work really hard for every one after that. Gavin Hamilton provided the backbone of the reply with another
masterful century, but with John Wood and James Lee both
taking 3 for 50-odd, there were a few nervous faces as we
grafted towards the target, with good contributions right down the order. Kez Ahmed was undaunted and saw us home
in fine style in the end. Very well done to Lee and the team
on coming through a really tough contest and we look for-
ward to the Bank Holiday Sunday in Bingley against Pudsey St. Lawrence.
The Second Team are only 10 points off the lead and are
away at Spen Victoria, who are not having a great season but
did have a comfortable win over Idle last weekend. Good luck to Matt with a slightly depleted side today.
The 3rd XI are away at Liversedge on Sunday with the pros-
pect of Murphy Walwyn providing support for the youngsters.
It’s great to see the likes of Phil Taylor and Murph giving their
time and experience in this way. We have no home match this Sunday, but next Saturday the
2nd XI will be entertaining Great Horton at South View Road
and next Sunday (the 24th), we’re playing two Dyson T20
matches away against Bankfoot – 1pm and 4 pm. Enjoy the cricket!
Phil.

What a great weekend last
week. Two narrow victories
against two of the top sides in
the Division.. It was a good
win against Pudsey St
Lawrence in what turned out
to be a nail biter. After a good
batting display again set up
by Gav and Gibby, we posted
a very competitive 238. They got off to a decent start put-
ting on 76 for the first wicket
in what was becoming a good chase. The game
turned on its head when the spin twins were
introduced. Kez and Jarvo bowled with great
control to rip through the middle order leaving
them 138-9. Game Over !!?? or so we thought that
was until Ian Priestley came to the crease and af-
ter getting himself ”in” proceeded to smash the at-
tack to all parts with an unbeaten 95, but a great
last over from Hutchy saw us home. Kez recorded
respectable figures of 4-73 off 15 overs and Jarvo an incredible 4-22 off 15.

Congratulations to Jack Bleazard who represented
Yorkshire in an Under 11 game v Cleaveland at
Weatherby last Tuesday. The good news is that
Yorkshire won with Jack scoring 25 Not Out with
the bat and got a wicket as well . Well done Jack.
Congratulations also go to Cameron Bell who has
been selected for the Bradford League Lord
Taverners. Well done Cammy LAD.

The Second XI Captain’s Log
After a couple of indifferent weeks, we
enter this weekend’s double header
with a great opportunity to put our-
selves in with a great chance of
promotion; its amazing to think that
there will only be 8 games remaining after Sundays game. This weekend
we have to travel or should that be roll down the hill
to Spen Victoria and Cleckheaton; and whilst Spen
haven’t quite produced the stats to back up what
looks like a decent team on paper, Cleck are right
in the mix and they have produced some consistent
results since their 9 wicket loss at our place earlier
in the season. So if the weather holds we should be
in for a competitive weekend.
Finally a bit of begging – Gareth, John Davis and
Jonathan Mellors are taking part in a 26 mile Row-athon on Friday – and before you start
imagining a rowing boat buckling under the severe
strain of Jonathan and Gareth sat in the middle of
the thing, I should stress that it is indoors and the
only danger of drowning will be from the pools of
sweat coming from their growing brows. We are
trying to raise money for The Rugby League
Benevolent Fund – a truly worthwhile cause who
support all those who have suffered illness or injury
whilst involved within the sport. Any donations will
be gratefully received.

Third XI Comment
While the mayhem of the Priestley Cup unfolded at
South View Road, it was business as usual for the
Third team as they travelled to Mirfield HL
Having won the toss East Bierley put Mirfield in to bat
and at 75 for 0 that decision looked suspect. Captain
Toothill brought on spinners at both ends to stem the
leaking of runs and that proved the key to winning the
game. Liam Bleazard (5-25) and Kayne Whitehead( 3-
24) devastated their batting attack, with Sean Burns
and Cameron Bell also getting wickets. Mirfield
however contributed to their own downfall as they
went from 95 for 5 to 139 all out in 34 overs. East
Bierley made a good start with Kayne and Sean
reaching 51-0 before Sean got out, followed by Kayne
a few balls later. That started a mini collapse but both
Eddie Roberts and Tom Ormondroyd steadied the ship
and Tom eventually turned the tide East Bierley’s
way. Our section of the league table now looks like
this. Its Liversedge away tomorrow from 2 pm. Why
not bring a picnic to Liversedge and support the lads!

Ishy Dawood sparkled with 26 at a run a ball
striking cleanly and pushing quick singles. Azhar
followed suit so Kez was left to finish the match in
style after 48.5 overs with 21 off 12 balls includ-
ing 2 smashing sixes which eased the pressure
and brought a well fought, well deserved , but
nerve jangling win, a place in the Priestley Cup
final on 28th August and revenge for an earlier
league defeat.
What a comeback for East Bierley against the
form team of the Bradford League(2nd place) and a very weekend double after the dismal display
against Hyde in the National Cup the previous
week.
Even the most critical of East Bierley supporters
must be happy at these two hard fought victories
against 5th Place Pudsey St Lawrence by 6 runs
and 2nd placed Cleckheaton by 2 wickets. Almost
too much excitement for any cricket fan in two
days. Only David Booth can complain at anything
(a Gavin 6 smashed his car window! )

Lee lost the toss yet again and Cleckheaton chose to
bat. Their highly successful opening partnership of
‘slow but sure’ Mark Cummins and ‘hard hitting’ John
Wood were both bowled by Ahzar Ullah for low
scores. Tim Jackson then began his battle to take
Cleck to a reasonable total. Runs were hard to come
by against AhzarUllah and Paul Hutchison and then
Kez Ahmed and Like Jarvis. The fifth bowler, skipper
Lee Goddard, played his part with two wickets as he
swapped the bowlers around well. Tim Jackson gained confidence and scored 68 off 22 balls before
a final flourish by Mally Nicholson, 47 off 39 balls
and Ian Wood (18) meant the 7th wicket brought the
biggest stand of 68 at the end. All the East Bierley
bowlers did well and shared the wickets with 2 each
for Azhar, Luke and Lee and 1 -35 from Kez.
Only Gavin Hamilton looked comfortable for East
Bierley and he scored 35 of the first 52 runs for 2
wickets. The stand of the day , 98 in 20 overs, by
Gavin and Andrew Rennison helped gain some con-
trol against the various Cleck bowlers. Gavin took
charge with a match winning century scored at a run
a ball, while Renno played an unaccustomed , very
patient supporting role of 29 off 71 balls which was
vital in the circumstances. When Gavin left for 101,
Cleck saw a hope and at 156-5 had E Bierley’s
nerves on edge. Now it was down to the strength in
depth of their batting to come good. . James Lee (3-
58) and John Wood(3-55) were threats but the bats-
men played cameo roles of a few runs, quickly, to
ease closer to victory.
