Strive For ExcellenceDuke of Edinburgh 60th Year

Celebration NightWoolooware High School was invited to Government House as a part of the Duke of Edinburgh 60th year celebrations. Representing WHS were students Levi and Charlotte, our Duke of Edinburgh leader Mrs Brown and Adventurous Journey Coordinator, Mr Grant. Mrs Brown commented that meeting Prince Edward and the Governor of New South Wales was a wonderful experience.

Duke of EdingburghWoolooware High School Duke of Edinburgh students recently completed the qualifying Adventurous Journey of the Bronze Award. Students and staff completed the beautiful Coast Walk, camping overnight at North Era. It doesn’t get much better - a magical sunrise, perfect weather, morning tea with an amazing view, whales, dolphins and waterfalls. The enthusiastic group of Year 9 and 10 students enjoyed the challenge of a 22km hike on day 2 two of their qualifying journey. Mr GrantIndustrial Arts Faculty

Strive For ExcellenceLove Bites

Freya, Year 10 was nominated as a finalist in the Sutherland Shire Love Bites Reflections Awards, and received her certificate at a function at Cronulla Sharks Leagues club on the 26th November.

The function included an art showcase of finalists from participating schools including Sylvania, Menai, Woolooware and Endeavour High Schools, Lucas Heights Community School, St.Patrick’s College and The Jannali High School.

Love Bites is a Respectful Relationships Education Program for young people aged 15-17 years. It consists of two interactive workshops: one on Relationship Violence, and one on Sex and Relationships, followed by creative workshops and community campaigns. The Love Bites program was delivered earlier in 2019 to all Year 10 Students across 3 consecutive days, and we are excited about the program returning to be delivered to Year 10 in 2020.

Love Bites Coordinator Amber Schacht praised the Year 10 students, “I am ever inspired by young people like the finalists here today who vow to do their part to end abuse in relationships and advocate for respectful relationships for all.”

Congratulations Freya!

National Art School Intensive HSC workshops

Over the past two holiday periods two of our senior Visual Arts students attended HSC Intensive studio practice workshops at the National Art school (NAS). This took dedication as it required attendance for four days in the July holidays and five days in the September break.

The WHS students who were chosen from over 300 applicants were Jayde Y11 and Annika Y11. Jayde attended the Painting class and Annika the Life Drawing. Both did extremely well and we congratulate these two exemplary art students.

Strive For ExcellenceFlourish

Woolooware’s flagship learning program FLOURISH has just concluded its seventh year! Once again a high achieving group from our new Year 12 has benefited from the wisdom of the broader community and business leaders.

The body of the program consists of four weekly sessions where business mentors work with our students to unpack various aspects that might help them to achieve at a high level, not only for the HSC, but in life… Everything from understanding our strengths and weaknesses (The Cards in our Deck), to resilience and how to develop a Growth Mindset (The Rock in the Stream), to goal setting (Infinity and Beyond), and finally, the value of team work and collaboration (Geese, Ants and the Ocean).

The program is launched with a special event where mentors meet their mentees and their parents, and of course, we celebrate success with our FLOURISH ‘graduation’ function held at the conclusion of the course.

This year, we would especially like to thank the following mentors who have contributed so much of their time in support of our students, helping them to FLOURISH!

Strive For ExcellenceBackstreets on Broadway

‘Backstreets on Broadway’ premiered on Wednesday 4th, at Woolooware High. Creative and Performing Arts elective and extracurricular Music, Dance, Drama and Visual Arts students collaborated to create a complete visual and musical experience for audiences. The gorgeous students from Caringbah Primary School joined our Year 7 for a mati-nee and our big show was Wednesday night.

The original production follows the journey of four aspiring performers on their quest to land a coveted role in a Broadway Production. Our show features music from an array of popular musicals, which meant that audiences were thoroughly entertained! Our primary guests were familiar with much of the music, so they loved it.

Getting this show together has been a monumental effort by the Creative and Performing Arts team at this time of the year. Amidst assessment, reporting and a series of other school events that threw us ‘curve balls’ - Ms Petrakis, Ms Porteous, Ms Makhoul and Ms Micos have worked wonders. The CAPA team are an extraordinary group of professionals who have worked phenomenal hours over recent weeks to make this event happen. I can’t thank you enough for your loyalty, dedication and commitment to this show and to Woolooware High School.

There are others who have been integral to making our production a success. I really hope I don’t forget anyone, so here goes…

Let’s talk about the music first. Our fabulous conductors, Theo Bonny and James Greening have our band sounding wonderful. (Oh James, we will miss you next year). They are supported by the talented team of tutors: Dana Alison, Nish Manjunath, Danny Junor, Adrian Veale and Steve Marin. Our band were just so good on Wednesday night! There were compliments flying around the hall about just how good they were. Jacob Ingram does an awesome job with the guitar ensemble and Berni Wallace’s work with the vocal group is pretty special! She is so clever the mixes she creates are so captivating and our singers have absolutely thrived under her. Their pieces were absolutely fabulous.

Meanwhile, there were 10 dances performed on the night - a huge undertaking, but they made the show a real spectacle. Jenna Beth-Taylor takes our junior dance group each week, choreographing beautiful numbers for dancers. Jenna is able to step in and tighten any dance on the spot. She is incredible. Our senior dance students Hollie Y11 Taylor Y11 have remained committed to our school, choreographing gorgeous pieces for the evening. Taylor’s leadership was visible in her beautiful performances throughout the night. A special mention to Bianca Y10 and Edouard Y10 for their beautifully choreographed Lion King duo. These dancers also needed costuming. So many people helped there, Ms Makhoul’s mum even whipped up some awesome costumes the night before! Thank you so much to everyone involved in dance you made the show great, and I can’t help but think how exhausting it must have been for you after the intensive rehearsals. Thanks for hanging in there.

Ms Micos organised our multiple stages, lighting and actors. Her vision add a whole new dimension to the performance. Our actors were relatively inexperienced on the big stage and they simply got better and better each time we did the show. You were fabulous. Oompa Loompas, you were not only hilarious, you were totally dependable. These guys didn’t just act, they were behind the scenes making sure every set and prop was in its rightful place at the right time. Believe me, there was a lot to do back there.

Thank you to Pat Rogers, Ms Porteous and Callum Y11 on sound and lighting which really made the show a spectacle. Callum worked so hard for days on end. I found him napping under the lighting desk between shows! It must have been exhausting and I can’t thank you enough. Mark Creagan emerged from retirement to help out on hall set up. The Industrail Art staff made us some awesome props that we needed. Lena Gersbach was responsible for set design and coordinating the team of Year 10 elective art students that painted and constructed sets. She also took photographs on the night. Charlotte, Emily and Anastasija from Y9 Art, thank you for those hours spent on the fabulous sets. Aimee and Abbey thank you for the videos. Thank you to the Woolooware Auxiliary for the ‘candy bar’ and to Ms Mooyman and the Home Economic staff for the dotty cookies - so very Charlie!

Thank you to the school executive, particularly our principal, Mardi Benson, for making this event happen and to our parents for showing faith in our performing arts pro-gram and supporting us.

Finally I need to recognise the efforts of our talented performers. Thank you for your hard work throughout the year. Thank you for choosing to participate in the Woolooware High School Creative and Performing Arts programs, and finally a big congratulations on your performances in our show. You were phenomenal!

Strive For ExcellenceYear 12 Visual Arts Body of Work Exhibition

Late last term, Year 12 Visual Arts held an exhibition of their fabulous Bodies of Work for the school community. The achievements of this talented bunch of students are remarkable. The Body of Work is a challenge and a wonderful journey for Visual Arts students who have worked so hard to see their visions through to a polished final product for their HSC submission.

I would like to thank the parents and grandparents that have helped out along the way and congratulate our class of 2019 on their accomplishments. The works speak for themselves!

We had 5 of these fabulous works nominated for Artexpress, the exhibition of the best artworks from the 8552 works in the state. To even be considered, their works achieve at, or very close to full marks. I was absolutely thrilled to be informed that Lucy, Tahlia, Sophie, Claudia and Kyra had their works nominated for the exhibition! There must have been several more which were very close to nomination.

At this point, the decision is made by curators at the Artexpress venues, where works are selected on the basis of suitable size, theme and to ensure there are a range of expressive forms exhibited. At the end of the day they are curating an exhibition. Three of our fabulous works were selected! Kyra and Claudia’s works will be shown at the Hazelhurst Gallery (nice and close to home for us) and Sophie’s will be part of a new virtual exhibition next June.

Congratulations to our fabulous Artexpress students, but really, all of year 12 Visual Arts… you have absolutely excelled and you should be very proud of you achievements in Visual Arts.

Strive For ExcellencePeer Support

The Peer Support program plays an integral part in ensuring our incoming Year 7 students feel welcome and valued in our school. This year, close to seventy Year 9 students have signed on to fulfil the important role of Year 10 Peer Support Leaders in 2020. Our student leaders have embarked on this challenge, jumping in to the training day with great enthusiasm. Many thanks to the teachers who helped with Peer Support training: Ms Pearse, Ms Sales and Mr Baker.

Our new leaders are to be commended on the fantastic encouragement they provided to their Year 6 groups on Orientation Day, steering them around the school, introducing them to staff, answering questions, helping them to make new friends, and not to mention, sharing a sausage sizzle lunch.

We are sure our new Year 7’s will be well supported! Mrs Moon Welfare Coordinator

A future PM in our midst? This year, Jasmine, Year 11, participated in the Youth Parliament, a YMCA initiative involving students throughout NSW and Queensland. Jasmine has taken time out to reflect on this valuable experience: “I have always had a strong interest in politics, as I have always cared very deeply for the lives and rights of all people. Politics impact people’s lives drastically, and it upsets me that this impact is not always positive, which is why I am so passionate about making a change. I originally learnt of the YMCA Youth Parliament program through a friend, who fervently encouraged me to apply as she believed I would be a great ‘fit’ for the program. As a sixteen-year-old, it can sometimes feel like it is impossible to make my voice heard, but through the Youth Parliament program my frustration was alleviated”.

The program took place in two parts: an introductory program during the second term holidays and the Parliament program during the third term holidays. In the introductory program we formed our committees and learnt all about how to write our bills for Parliament and discussed what we should include within them. Before the next part of the program, each committee would collaborate to write their bill together, formulating an official legislative bill to present at State Parliament. During the Parliament program, we went to the NSW State Parliament each day to debate whether we would pass the amended or unamended versions of each committee’s bill, which would then be passed on to the official politicians to review.

“Since the completion of the program, I have been able to reach out to many politicians and have my ideas heard by incredibly influential people. The Minister for Mental Health even contacted me, telling me that many of the policies I was fighting for were now beginning to be put into legislation. I truly encourage every young person who wishes to make a positive change in Australia to take part in this program, as together, we can show why the youth of today deserve a voice”!

Strive For ExcellenceGreece Trip

Arriving in Athens after a 30 hour journey we were assigned our rooms and enjoyed a delicious dinner at the hotel roof top restaurant. Everyone was extremely tired so an early night as we had an early start the next morning to commence our Greece trip.

The following morning, we visited the Acropolis, the most significant reference point in ancient Greek culture, its magnificent Parthenon, the crowning glory of classical architecture and the National Archaeological Museum. Heading out of Athens for a day on the Peloponnese Peninsula, we visited theCorinthian Canal and Ancient Korinthos archaeological site. In the afternoon the groupvisited the peaceful sanctuary of Epidaurus, considered the greatest of the divine ritual sites in antiquity. Returning to Athens, a visit to the state-of-the-art New Acropolis Museum, focusing on finds from the Acropolis. Then in the afternoon, extraordinary Sounion, with its beautiful Temple of Poseidon and fantastic ocean views. Before leaving Athens the next morning there was time to visit the ancient Agora, once frequented by Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle and explore the origins of democracy. The afternoon was dedicated to Thermopylae, astrategically important geographic area, witness to many great battles and to visiting Delphi, the sanctuary of Apollo and its awe-inspiring ruins.

The next morning, we departed for Olympia, legendary home of the Olympic Games and the awe inspiring sculptures from the Temple of Zeus and Hera. The following day we travelled to Mycenae, with its famous Lion Gate and massive ‘Cyclopean’ walls of 1400 BC and visit the Archaeological Museumn of Mycenae. The town of Nafplio was beautiful and everyone completed their last minute shopping while on mainland Greece.

Back to Athens and a flight to Santorini Island and its vast and turbulent history, including devastating volcanic eruptions. We still had time to discover the stunning coastline and culture including a visit to Oia, known for its whitewashed houses carved into the clifftops. Take a ferry to Crete, to continue the discovery of the Minoan civilisation. A guided tour of Heraklion, the Ancient palace of Knossos.

After two weeks it was our final night in Greece with memories that will last a lifetime. We returned to Athens and ready ourselves for the 30 hour journey back to Australia. Thank you to all the students for your outstanding cooperation and behaviour, parents for your support, Miss Norfolk, Mr Burns and Miss Curtin for your assistance.

A wonderful trip !!!

Year 10 Food Technology students spent a day doing a behind the scenes tour and lunch at the Sydney Tower Buffet. Students learnt about the Hospitality Industry as part of their unit studies in Food Service and Catering. They saw food preparation, were spoken to by the executive chef and explored all aspects of the business. The highlight, of course, was the buffet lunch with over 50 delicious food choices. It was a beautiful Sydney day with a stunning view.

Thanks to Ms Patrick for coordinating this remarkable excursion. Mr Turansky was our special guest as Year 10 Deputy Principal, he gave the seafood 10/10! Congratulations to the students on their excellent behaviour and conduct on the excursion.

Levi Y9 successfully achieved the Bronze Award in Duke of Edinburgh. Levi completed the Adventurous Journey, played softball for his Physical Rereation, studied guitar for the skill component and completed community service with Dandelion.

Food TechnologyYear 10 Food Technology students are currently studying the unit Food Service and Catering. A part of the unit relates to presentation, that we “eat with our eyes”. It covers how important presentation is regarding our meals and making that first impression. They developed a range of skills and knowledge regarding techniques that are used professionally.

Their final assessment for the year was to demonstrate a range of practical and presentation skills that they have developed over the years during a practical examination. Each individual student was required to develop and create a main meal for an upscale seafood restaurant using key seasonal ingredients and their own alterative choice of items. The plating and design was up to the students.

There were some extremely impressive and very professional results that would look in place in any five star restaurant. The photos speak for themselves, well done!

Strive For ExcellenceYear 12 Drama

Congratulations to our Year 12 Drama class of 2019, for completing their practical HSC!

Last term, our students performed their group and individual performances for external HSC markers and sent off their individual projects, wrapping up their practical component of the HSC Drama course.

Students graciously entertained our staff with a showcase of their group performances during their last weeks of school. Thank-you to all staff for supporting our students in their achievements and being wonderful audience members.

To top this off, one of the groups were nominated for OnSTAGE 2020, a showcase of outstanding Drama performances from the 2019 Higher School Certificate! If successful in their nominated application, students will perform their group performance at the Seymour Centre for a public live audience, which includes high school groups from all around the state. This is a fantastic achievement for our students and we wish them well in gaining a place in the performance program. Well done and good luck to the group consisting of three students- Sian, Georgia and Emersyn.

Study Skills Tips: Managing Anxiety During ExamsIf you are someone who freezes or has a mental blank during an exam, or is overly anxious, you may find that the heightened anxiety is reducing your ability to recall information.

Remember that being as prepared as possible and not leaving your study until the last minute, can make a big difference in reducing anxiety. Start your study early and make a plan so that you have time to study what you need to without stress. It is also important to note that the more practice tests you do, the more familiar you are with the test so it will be less intimidating and you will be used to working under time limits.

When you are in the exam and you feel anxious, a good strategy is to close your eyes for a moment and take some long, deep breaths. When you open your eyes do some of the questions you find easy or feel confident about. Meanwhile your subconscious will have a chance to recall the things you are struggling to remember. Another trick is try moving your eyes to different directions, looking up and to the left. This can also sometimes prompt recall. Visit the MANAGING STRESS unit, in the www.studyskillshandbook.com.au for more strategies. Remember, you can seek help from a counsellor for techniques on how to manage stress. Learn more at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au Our school’s MOODLE site has a direct link. Log in to MOODLE – EXTREME LEARNING – Study Skills then click the ELES Study Skills Handbook link.

Strive For ExcellenceYear 7 Orientation Day

It was great to welcome Year 6 (our year 7 2020)!

We had a fantastic day, meeting all of the new students and their parents/ guardians. There was a small presentation where our newest students were inspired by our current School Captains. They were then given a tour of Woolooware High School with our lovely Peer Support group, and much excitement was heard amongst the students as they walked around. The highlight for many was the ever popular sausage sizzle where there was a lot of socialising with old friends and making of new friends.

We are very much looking forward to all the new faces joining us in 2020!

Strive For ExcellenceMarine Studies

Year 10 Marine are currently studying a unit of work on ‘Navigation at Sea’.

They are also developing their Beach Culture Projects which involved a visit to the beach to collect artefacts and also to help clean up rubbish on the beach. There were a lot of bluebottles on the shore and a puffer fish that had washed up on the beach. It was quite unwell as it was missing its tail which had been bitten off by another fish! We put it back in the water but its chances of survival were very slim.

GeographyYear 12 Geography students visited the Lindt Chocolate Factory at Marsden Park as part of their chocolate unit.

Design and TechnologyYear 11 Design and Technology students alongside some gifted Year 8 and 10 students took part in the Whitehouse Institute of Design. The Incursion went the full day and the students were taught by a very talented Whitehouse teacher who made the special visit.

The Incursion was a “One Day Fashion School Workshop”, the students were introduced to the exciting world of fashion and design. What it’s like working in the industry, what trends major design companies are following and what causes these trends. The Whitehouse teacher taught students how to create fashion figures, apply garments to these figures, how to create texture, shading, plus the creation of a face for design.

There were many gifted and talented designers throughout all the year groups, in particular Indiana Y11 who came first! She won a scholarship of a three day workshop of her choosing to take part at Whitehouse Institute of Design. Alexandra Y11 was a very close second, she went home with a gift bag of design materials. Congratulations!

The students all received a certificate of completion and were all very proud of their creations. Who knows, we might have the future Sass & Bide or Camilla Franks amongst us!

Strive For ExcellenceOpen Girls Baseball 2019

The Open Girls Baseball Knockout team was undefeated this year. After defeating Port Hacking High School to be crowned Sydney East Champions, the girls advanced to the NSWCHS semi-final game. Our opponent was The Rivers College Lismore. The girls took control of the game from the first innings and came away with a very impressive 19-2 win. Great pitching from Sasha Y12 and plenty of hits from all the girls. Our win meant we were to meet The Hills Sports High School in the CHS Final!

Unfortunately the final was washed out and the CHS Convener was unable to schedule an alternate time slot for the game. This was very disappointing for the girls because our team was back to full strength and we were keen to take on The Hills Sports High who had beaten us in the last three finals in 2018, 2017 and 2016. 2019 was going to be our year!

As a result of the wash out, we were declared Joint NSWCHS Champions. Gold medallists!

Congratulations to all the girls – Sasha, Maddi, Tiarne, Jayde, Kaylee, Mia, Hana, Alison, Caitlin, Ava and Keala. You always represented WHS with great sportsmanship. Thank you to our Year 12 girls, Sasha, Maddi and Tiarne, for your years of baseball for the school and your excellent example to the younger girls.

Ms PeardLanguage

Open Girls Softball2019 was a successful but frustrating year for the Open Girls Softball team. In their first knockout game, the girls defeated St George Girls High 16-3. This qualified the team to compete at Sydney East Central Venue Day.

The girls won both their games convincingly, defeating Kirrawee High 5-1 and Menai High 14-3. In the Sydney East Championship playoff, the girls were narrowly beaten by a strong Engadine High School team 11-13. However as one of the top two teams from Sydney East, we qualified for the CHS Championship held in Newcastle. This is where the top 16 teams from NSW compete.

Unfortunately due to heavy rains in Newcastle the CHS Championship was called off at the last minute, so we didn’t get to compete. This was very frustrating for the girls as we were looking forward to showing what we could do!

A big thank you to our wonderful Year 12 students who have represented Woolooware HS so admirably over the years – Sasha, Maddi and Tiarne. Your talent and leadership will be greatly missed!

Special mention to Sasha who was selected in the victorious NSW All Schools Softball team who defeated Queensland 5-2 to take out the School Sport Australia Championship. Sasha’s performance in the tournament earned her selection in the National Girls Softball team. The team competed in the U19 Softball World Cup in Irvine, USA, finishing in 4th position. Congratulations Sasha!

Jayde Y11 was also selected to represent Australia in the U17 Girls Softball team. The U17 Aussie Diamonds competed in Minnesota, USA in July. Congratulations Jayde!

Thank you girls for a fun and successful season.

Strive For ExcellenceCheer Championships

On Sunday, 15 September our Cheer Team competed at the AASCF NSW State Cheer Championships at Quay Centre Homebush. This was our first competition of the year and the girls were feeling nervous but excited to perform their routine. They all looked fantastic in their cheer uniforms and bows.

After a few wobbles backstage in warm up, the team hit the floor. Although the girls nailed all their stunting, there were a few timing issues that meant our routine wasn’t perfect. Despite this, we still scored the highest raw score in our division! Unfortunately we were penalised for a legality which dropped our place from 1st to 2nd overall. Still an amazing achievement!

For many of the girls, this performance was their first cheer competition, so the experience and guidance of our ‘old girls’ was valuable. Congratulations to all the girls who have shown great commitment to learn a challenging and exciting routine in a short amount of time. We look forward to our next competition, Cheerbrandz Nationals, in early November. Well done Woolooware Waves!

Strive For ExcellenceCheerbrandz National Champions!

On Saturday, 2nd November our Cheer Team competed at Cheerbrandz Nationals at Genea Centre Homebush. The girls have been working really hard since their last competition to perfect their timing and clean up their stunting in preparation for this competition.

After a thorough warmup backstage, it was time to take the floor. The girls performed brilliantly. They hit all their stunts, tumbled well and their pyramid looked amazing! Not long after the routine we found out that we ‘hit zero’, which means there were no deductions from the routine’s score. At the presentation we were awarded first place in the High School Division and the title of National Champions!

Congratulations to the team and their coach Sienna from Shire Elite Cheerleading. The girls’ hard work and commitment to this challenging but rewarding sport has paid off in 2019. Well done Woolooware Waves!

Strive For ExcellenceOn Tuesday, 29 October Woolooware High School participated in the Sydney East under 15s KO Waterpolo Carnival at Sutherland Pool. It was a beautiful 26 degree day by the pool.

Woolooware High was fortunate to have both a girls’ team and a boys’ team to qualify for the Carnival. Each team participated in three games throughout the day. If a team won all three games they would progress to the Sydney East Regional Final.

Our girls’ team is our developing squad which consisted of lots of keen and eager Year 7 girls wishing to experience WaterPolo at a high level and two Year 9 students. The girl’s first game was against Engadine High, where they convincingly won 10-1. They also played against Endeavour Sports High and had another fantastic win 6-1. The girls worked really well as a team and there were some special performances by Mia, Ella and Indiah who were very strong in attack, Laura and Bree who were equally as strong in defence. All other team members developed their skills throughout the day and contributed to the team’s success. Unfortunately, we lost our game against Kirrawee High 5-2 so they just missed out on the Regional Final.

I’m sure with such a young developing squad the Woolooware Girl’s team will be in the final in the not too distant future.

Well done girls for achieving a fun enjoyable day with great performances.

Lara, Laura, Ella, Mia, India, Hayley, Jordan, Bree and Chloe.

The boy’s team has a depth of talent this year but again a very young team with many Year 7 students keen to demonstrate their skills and talent! The boy’s first game was against Lucas Heights where they had a great win 8-0. Again, a lot of the Year 7 boys contributed to this successful result.

The second game was against Sylvania where the boys also experienced another win 9-3. Their final game to make it to the regional final that had to be won was against Cronulla High. Our boys played so well and were matched in talent and skill, unfortunately we lost this very tough game 6-1.

Special mention to Jacob in goals who put his body on the line to stop the goals.

Well done boys on a great demonstration of teamwork, skill and encouragement.
