Rare Charles II London delft mug sells for 82,000AN astonishing result wasachieved at auction forThe Cotswold AuctionCompany on MidsummersDay, Thursday, June 21, attheir Cheltenham ChapelWalk saleroom.

A rare 17th-centuryEnglish delft mug came tothe market in a specialistcollectors sale and causeda real battle amongst delftenthusiasts , resulting inone of the highest everprices achieved for a delftmug at auction.

    The mug, a highly

important piece ofEnglish ceramic history, had been unearthedamongst house contentsdestined for sale byauctioneer LindseyBraune on a routine visit.

I was just listing thelots for sale when the mugseemed to jump out at mefrom the back of a chinacabinet! said Lindsey.

What was particularlystriking was its armorialshield, together with thevery early date of 1674. Isuggested taking it away it

for research rather tothe familys surprise, asthey thought the chips onthe rim would mean itwasnt of value.

In fact, for its age, themug was in remarkablecondition. English delft isa type of tin-glazedearthenware, light inweight and very easilydamaged, so that fewpieces survive threecenturies or more withoutmajor faults.

The globular-shapedmug was painted in blue

with a shield from thearmorial bearings of theWorshipful Company ofSalters, comprising threesalt pots with grains ofsalt trailing from each.

The WorshipfulCompany of Salters is oneof the oldest liverycompanies in the country ranked number nine inthe Great Twelve City ofLondon LiveryCompanies and wasfounded in 1394.

    The painted floraldecoration around the

shield has charmingadditions, such as abutterfly and a snail andthe homely motto on the

rim states I am but earthit is most trew, disdain meenot for so are you, ano dom1674 and the mug alsobears the initials WWR,possibly indicating that itwas a wedding present fora liveryman of theCompany.

Lindsey said: Theamount of interest beforethe sale was phenomenaland viewers wereparticularly struck by theinscription, date and crispdecoration but above allby the condition. Devotees

of English delft said theyfelt privileged just to holdit for a short time, becauseit is so rare.

The last of the 3 sales ofthe Longridge CeramicCollection at Christies,London in May this yearincluded a smaller delftmug with powderedmanganese decoration, which sold at 59,000. It isthought that Tuesdaysresult in Cheltenham mayactually be a record for adelft mug sold at auction.

    Interested parties were

keeping their cards closeto their chest prior to thesale and many turned upin the saleroom to dobattle with telephone andinternet bidders.

Serious commission bidswere received by theauctioneers before the saleand bidding started at25,000, rising quickly to70,000 in the room, thenpushed up by telephonebidders until the mug wassecured by ceramicsspecialist Garry Atkinsbidding in the room on

behalf of a collector. This was an

    auctioneers dream saidLindsey.

And early Englishceramics are one of myparticular passions. Icould hardly believe whatI had found and carryingout the research with thehelp of the archivist at theSalters Company andGloucester archives wasfascinating. We think thatthe mug may even havebeen in the same familyfrom the beginning, but

records from this periodare rather elusive!

The next CotswoldAuction Companyspecialist collectors sale inCheltenham will takeplace in October andincludes books, medals, militaria, stamps, coinsand other collectables.Entries are already beingaccepted and theauctioneers are happy togive advice on value.

Cntact them on 01242-256363 or via the websiteotswoldauction.co.uk.
