Opens the New File dialog, allowing you to create a new file based on a template.

Opens a dialog box to choose the file to open.

This command opens the save dialog for saving the opened document. This option is grayed out if the file has not been altered since its last save.

Opens a dialog box to save the open document under a different name, or as a different file type, or both.

This works just like "Save As...", except you continue editing the file under the original name. This is good for saving backups of your document at composition milestones.

Undoes all changes made since the document was last saved. They can be Redone by using Redo (on the Edit menu), or the Redo button on the toolbar.

Opens a dialog box to print the open document.

Opens a dialog box to setup the Paper size, Orientation, Scale and Margins.

Opens the Properties dialog, which allows you to view and edit document metadata -- information about the document, such as the author's name.

Properties… | Recent Files

The Recent Files submenu provides shortcuts to the files you have most recently used within AbiWord. Selecting a file on this submenu opens that file.

If you have more than one AbiWord document open, this command closes the current document and its window.

Close | Quit

Closes all open documents and exits AbiWord.

Features - Edit Menu

This command undoes an action. Every application of the Undo command undoes a single action, so to undo many actions you must apply it many times.

Undo| Redo

Redo is the inverse of undo. It is only available when an action has been undone, and it redoes the most recently undone action. Like undo, it can be applied repeatedly to redo a large number of actions.

Features - Edit Menu

Cut removes the selected text from the document and places it on the clipboard. This replaces any text previously placed on the clipboard. The formatting of the text is retained, as well as its content.

Cut| Copy

Copy puts the selected text onto the clipboard, but does not remove it from the document.

Paste adds the text on the clipboard to the document. If there is no text selected in the current document, the text is added as if it had been typed at the insertion point.

Paste| Paste Unformatted

This command pastes the text on the clipboard into the document, but does not paste its formatting. The pasted text takes on the formatting of the surrounding or preceding text.

Clear deletes the selected text.

This command selects the whole document.

Find allows you to find a search string within a document. Selecting this command calls up the Find dialog.

Find… | Replace…

Replace allows you search for occurrences of a search string in your document and replace it with a replacement string. Selecting this command calls up the Replace dialog.

This command allows you to move rapidly through a document. Selecting it calls up the Go To dialog.

'Page' moves you to the top of a page, while 'Line' moves you to the beginning of a line. 'Bookmark' takes you to a previously defined bookmark

Selecting this option changes whether or not the rulers are displayed.

Choosing this option changes whether the status bar at the bottom of the window is displayed.

If this option is checked, you can set the formatting of text from the toolbars or menus. If it is not checked, you can only change the formatting by applying styles.

Enable Formatting Tools | Show Formatting Marks

If this option is selected, formatting and other invisible characters are displayed on screen.

If this option is selected, the rulers, toolbars, and status bars are all hidden.

Full Screen | Zoom

The zoom submenu allows you to set your document's zoom. The zoom of your view is the magnification at which your document is displayed on your screen.

This command opens the Break dialog, which allows you to insert page, column, and section breaks.

Break | Page Numbers…

This command opens the Page Numbers dialog, allowing you to insert automatically calculated page numbers into your document's header or footer.

This opens the Date and Time dialog, which allows you to insert fields showing the current date and time into your document.

The Field dialog allows you to insert any field defined in AbiWord into your document. Fields are entities which automatically update their values.

Opens the Insert Bookmark dialog, which allows you to insert a named, invisible marker into your document. You can create hyperlinks to bookmarks, and go to them from the Go To dialog.

Opens the Insert Hyperlink dialog. If you click on a hyperlink, you are taken to either another part of the document, or to another document or website. Hyperlinks are displayed in blue, underlined text.

Mail merge allows you to insert information from one document, the mail merge source, into another document. Mail merge fields determine which information is inserted, and where.

Inserts the contents of a file into the open document. This command opens the Insert File dialog, which works the same as the normal Open File dialog.

This command opens an 'Insert Picture' dialog, which works like an Open dialog. You can open any png or bmp files you have, and insert them in your document at the insertion point.

This sub-menu allows you to insert Unicode direction markers LRM and RLM to control ordering of text.

This command opens the font dialog, which allows you to change the appearance of individual characters.

The Paragraph command opens the paragraph dialog, which allows you to change the appearance of whole paragraphs.

This command allows you to create various kinds of automatic list within your document. Each list uses a different style for the items within it. Within a list, press return to end one item and start the next.

This will pop up a window which will ask you for the details to create a table with a number of rows and columns.

The columns dialog allows you to set the number of newspaper-style columns in your document.

The tabs dialog allows you to set the position and type of tab stops.

This dialog will enable you to dynamically print the page number of each into the header or the footer section.

This command opens the Text Box format dialog, allowing you to change the appearance and behavior of a text box.

This dialog allows you to set headers and footers to be different on different pages, and to start page numbering at a set number in a section.

Header/Footers… | Footnotes/Endnotes…

This command opens the Format Footnotes and Endnotes dialog. Footnotes are notes that appear at the bottom of the

page, under the section of text to which they refer. Endnotes are notes gathered at the end of the document

or part of the document.

This command opens the Table of Contents dialog, allowing you to change the appearance and behavior of a Table of Contents.

Table of Contents… | Change Case…

The Change Case dialog affects the selected text, if any. If there is no text selected, the option is grayed out in the Format menu and not available.

This allows you to modify the text selected.

The options in this sub menu can be turned on and off by selecting the check boxes next to them.

Text Formatting | Create and Modify Styles

The Styles dialog allows you to create, modify, and delete styles in your AbiWord document.

This command starts a spell check on your document. You manage a spell check from the spelling dialog.

Check Spelling… | Set Language…

This command opens the Language dialog, and allows you to change the dictionaries that AbiWord uses to check the selected text. You can also use this command to change the language setting from the insertion point onward.

This command opens the Word Count dialog, and counts the words in your document.

Word Count… | Stylist…

This command enables you to stylize your content. In the “Styles” list there are some styles which you can open and apply them to a selected text inside the active document.

This command is used to see the history of your document. Note that in order to keep history of a document you need to select the “Maintain Full History”.

Document Show History | Annotations

This command is used to create annotations to words. An annotation is a note to better describe the word/s.

This command opens the plugin manager. Plugins are small programs which provide additional functions for AbiWord. Since all functions use disk and memory space, plugins allow you to select the ones that you need and remove the rest.

Plugins… | Preferences…

Your preferences define the ways in which you want AbiWord to operate. This command opens the preferences dialog, allowing you to alter your preferences. Preferences apply to the whole application, not just to the current document.

Insert Table... - Opens the Insert Table dialog. Columns Left/Right - Inserts columns to

the left or right of the selected column or columns.

Rows Above/Below - Inserts rows above or below the selected row or rows.

Sum a Row/Column - adds the numbers which are in that same row or column accordingly to what you have selected

Insert | Delete

Delete TableDeletes the current table. ColumnDeletes the column containing the insertion point. RowDeletes the row containing the insertion point.

This command opens the Format Table dialog. This allows you to change the appearance of your tables. You can set the borders of the table and cells, and the background color.

This dialog allows you to merge the cells in a table. Merge Left -Merge the current cell with the one to its left. Merge Right - Merge the current cell with the one to its right. Merge Above - Merge the current cell with the one above it. Merge Below - Merge the current cell with the one below it.

Features - Collaborate Menu

This command opens the Collaboration Accounts dialog. This allows you create an AbiCollab.net account so you can begin sharing your documents with friends.

Accounts… | Share Document…

This command opens the Share Document dialog. Here you will be able to select your account, and see the list of buddies you have from where you will be able to select the buddies you would like to share your document with.

This command opens the Open Shared Document dialog. Here you will see a list of people you are sharing files with together with their respective shared documents.

You can also add other friends to your sharing. Clicking “Open” will load the file from AbiCollab.net and open it in your AbiWord.
