Let’s Gather Together for... Thursday Night Art Group … SO creative!
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols
The following appeared in the Royal Cornwall Gazette, December 20, 1878.
“The Choir of the Cathedral will sing a number of carols in the Ca-thedral on Christmas Eve, the service commencing at 10pm. We understand that this is at the wish of many of the leading parishion-ers and others. A like service has been instituted in other cathedral and large towns, and has been much appreciated. It is the intention of the choir to no longer continue the custom of singing carols at the residences of members of the congregation.”
And so began a musical tradition heard around the globe. While it has been modified and adapted to local customs and traditions, the best known version comes from the King’s College, Cambridge, England.
The first Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King’s College was on Christmas Eve, 1918. Introduced by Eric Milner-White, Dean of the College, who believed that a more imaginative worship was needed by the Church of England. He adapted it from the original Truro Cathedral service, 38 years earlier in Cornwall. The order of the service remains basically the same today as in 1918.
The service begins with several organ preludes, setting the tone for the upcoming evening. The opening carol, “Once In Royal David’s City,” is sung each year, begun by a treble voice. Following the carol is a Bidding Prayer, a specific prayer in which the pastor leads the congregation in prayers for specific people or organizations, followed by the choir singing a Christmas carol or anthem.
For almost the entire remainder of the service, nine lessons, or scripture passages, are read. Each is followed by a choral carol or anthem, or a congregational carol. The music varies from year to year, depending on the strengths of the choir, music availability, the directors choice, or events that may precipitate the singing of a par-ticular piece.
In preparation for your attendance at either the Second Annual Rog-ers Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, December 6, 7:30 pm, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, or for our own festival on Sun-day, December 17, here are the scriptures read at every Lessons
and Carols that follows the King’s College format.
First Lesson: Genesis 3: 8-19 Second Lesson: Genesis: 22: 15-18 Third Lesson: Isaiah 9: 6-7 Fourth Lesson: Isaiah 11: 1-3a, 4a, 6-9 Fifth Lesson: Luke 1: 26-35; 38 Sixth Lesson: Luke 2: 1, 3-7 Seventh Lesson: Luke 2: 8-16 Eighth Lesson: Matthew 2: 1-12 Ninth Lesson: John 1: 1-14

November 19th is
"Pledge Sunday" here
at FUMC Rogers. Our
theme for the steward-
ship emphasis is
"Living With Gratitude"
and I look forward to
being together with you
in those services. On
that day, pledge cards
will be lifted to God in
thanks and praise at the
altar of the church.
I hope you can be present for “Pledge Sunday,” November
19 and be ready to place your card for next year’s giving in
the offering baskets. If you have any questions about the
church’s finances or this giving/pledging process, I’m hap-
py to visit with you. Finance Chairperson, Jill March and I
have written a personal letter to each of you, expressing our
hope for a successful program. Thank you for your stew-
ardship. It truly makes a very big difference in our success
as a congregation serving Christ in downtown Rogers.
That day is also our Charge Conference, and we will gather
in the parlor to hear the Northwest District Superintendent,
Rev. Stephen Coburn offer a word from the Annual Confer-
ence leadership regarding the good work of United Meth-
odism in Arkansas. Local leadership will be elected at the
conference, and I thank the members of the Committee on
Nomination (Lay Leadership Committee) for your careful
work these past two months. Some of you said "Yes!" for
the first time, and I look forward to your new venture in
leading the church forward in ministry. Others of you con-
tinued in service another year, and we will continue to lean
on your wisdom and experience. Overall, we are truly
learning together and living into our covenant to be an ex-
pression of the body of Christ here in historic downtown
Rogers.
The Charge Conference begins at 4 pm. A brief Adminis-
trative Council precedes the conference, and it begins at 3
pm. Both will be held in the parlor of the church.
Faithfully yours,
WE WELCOMED THE WADDELLS WITH OPEN ARMS!
Our very first ministry team of Rev. Don and Constance Waddell returned for a visit on Sunday, November 5! It was a warm reunion of many who are Charter Members of FUMC. The hugs and laughter filled the Chapel during Fellowship Time...and the Waddells, along with Norton family members, felt right at home for the All Saints Sunday worship service. Their visit was truly a blessing!

Turkey Bowl 2017 was our most successful year yet! For the 8th year in a row we partnered with CUMC Rogers and together collect-ed canned goods for Grace UMC food pantry and a friendly bowling competition. While it was another win for First Church, this year the biggest win is what we we're able to do when our 2 Student Minis-tries came together. We collected a group total of 1,082 canned goods! This is a 75+ increase from last year, enabling Grace food pantry to feed more people in a time of year when their supplies are
shortest. THANK YOU!
We had 37 student players and 9 coaches from FUMC and about 50 total from CUMC, so needless to say Fastlane Sunday night was FULL of Methodists! I cannot tell y'all what this weekend means to the Student Ministries families of First Methodist. From the Saturday night bonfire, meet-the-coaches breakfast, and the big game Sunday night...the entire weekend we strive to live as the church. We share meals, we pool our resources to help those most in need, we talk about Jesus, and we add more and more to a group each year. For Student Ministries Turkey Bowl IS Acts 2. We are excited to continue
the tradition next year and keep doing good in the name of Christ!
A huge thank you to our 2017 Turkey Bowl Coaches! Whitney Mann, Ashley Mann, Clint Hopper, Sarah Boyer, Cindy Miller, Aaron Miller, Joe Miller, Karen Moore and Jonathan Moore. We could not have done this weekend with you!

TROOP 122 NEEDS
FIREWOOD FOR 2018!
As you can imagine, it takes a small mountain of wood to keep sev-eral fires burning for all-weekend encampments. Now is a good time to get prepared for the future. If you have or know of hardwood trees like oak or hickory, live or dead, that can be harvested by the troop’s lumberjacks and lumberjills, please let the Troop know by
calling Mark Love, 479-366-7238. Thanks!
BBQ hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and hot dogs were grilled and served at the Grace meal on the first Sunday of November, along with baked beans, potato salad and cake. 94 meals were served at Grace and 22 meals were delivered to Souls Harbor.
Thanks a bunch to the following people who provided food for this event: Mary Edwards, Diana Kolman, Jill March, Vicki Watkins, Joan Dick, Evonne Holloway, Harriet Mack, Sharon Rothrock, Jack Fountain, Linda Reece, Lou Payne, Anne Cooper, Marie Greene, Jenny Harmon, Deb Farnum, Judy Simpson, and Patty Camp-bell. A big thank you to the following people who served: Chanda Kaskie and Craig Jefferson for grilling the meat; Sharon Rothrock and Linda Reece for serving drinks; Evonne Holloway's grand-daughters and Anne Cooper for serving desserts; Evonne Holloway, Marie Greene, Deb and Dave Farnum and Dillon Cooper for serving at the tables; Patty Campbell, Chanda Kaskie, and Linda Jefferson for washing dishes.
This is such an awesome team of people who give their time and resources to provide a good meal to people who might not get one that day or who just come for the companionship of the group. Thank you ALL for being part of this mission team! If you would like to be part of this mission, please call Sharon at 479-631-7997 or Linda at 479-685-5330. This meal is served every Sunday by one of the Methodist churches in Rogers. FUMC serves on the first Sunday of every month.
Next time we serve is December 3.
FUMC HOSTS MERCY VOLUNTEERS...
We were pleased to welcome 80 dedicated Mercy volunteers to the Ar-
kansas Hospital Auxiliary Association meeting on November 3. Our
FUMC members who volunteer at Mercy let the word out that Boomerang
Joy can serve up a delicious meal! A coffee bar complete with home-
made muffins and breads prepared them for a morning of meetings. For
lunch, Boomerang Joy served Quiche Lorraine, Smashed Potatoes and
Fall Salad topped off with a yummy Peach Crisp! Many thanks to the 20
plus BJ members who joyfully worked together to set up, organize, cook,
encourage, and clean up! We have such fun working together...and
earning $1200 that we will turn into amazing mission projects.

proach final semester exams, complete important programs, and find new ways of expressing their convictions. If you know of other members who
are in college here or away and not listed here, please call the church office or email us with that name and the place they attend college:
