Hello Owen Parents and Guardians: Considering the world our young people are growing up in today where they can connect to virtually anything and anyone at anytime, character traits such as integrity, initiative, respect, and citizenship can not remain posters on a wall or words in a speech. These character traits must become tools our children internalize and can readily use to proactively develop their own minds to exercise discipline, set goals and persevere when creating new opportunities for themselves and our world. In one week we will join over nine million other students across the country in celebrating National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week, October 16th-20th. We will start the week off by reading the 113th Congress Resolution and the Presidential Proclamation proclaiming the third week of October as National CHARACTER COUNTS! Week. Our canned food drive for Loaves & Fishes begins on Monday, October 16th. We will support the families in our district winter coat and boot drive. Your may donate new items or clean out your closets and donate slightly used winter coats, boots, hats, scarves, gloves, etc. Please be sure they are clean. Our three-screen assembly CPR”, Children Practicing Respect is planned, Classroom Ambassadors for each of the CC! pillars will be recognized and much more is planned. The following week on October 25th we will join people around the world by wearing orange on Unity Dayto show that we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.

District 204 will use PowerPTC for Parent-Teacher Conference Sign Up November 9th 4:30-8:00 November 13th 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.

District 204 is using PowerPTC, a new online service that allows parents at all grade levels to easily schedule parent-teacher conferences this year. In order to use the service, you will need to create a PowerPTC account using an activation code that will be emailed to parents on October 10 from the District. The email will include instructions to easily set up an account. For more information on using the system to sched-ule a conference, visit the District website, http://www.ipsd.org, and click on “New Way to Schedule Parent/Teacher Conferences. It will take you directly to the PowerPTC tutorial. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2NaY0yyaTg&feature=youtu.be Once your account is set up, you will be able to schedule your conferences during the follow-ing times: Elementary School: Scheduling opens October 17 at 9 am, closes November 2 at 5 pm. Middle School: Scheduling opens October 17 at 5 pm, closes November 8 at 12 pm. High School: Scheduling opens October 17 at 4 pm, closes November 8 at 12 pm. Contact the main office if you need assistance setting up your PowerPTC activation code. Just because you have an activation code set up, you will not be able to schedule a confer-ence until October 17th at 9:00 a.m. You can only sign up for one conference per teacher. Changes can be made until November 2nd. After that date, you would need to contact your child’s teacher. In addition to your child’s classroom teacher, art, music and physical education teacher, parents/guardians who have students who qualify for ELL or Project Arrow may CHOOSE to schedule a conference with that teacher. In addition, for parents/guardians who have students CURRENTLY RECEIVING services with another specialist at Owen, you may CHOOSE to schedule a conference with that staff member as well.

Crisis/Safety Drills We have our required lockdown drill with the Naperville Police Department and required fire drill with the Naperville Fire Department sched-uled in the next few weeks. The students and staff have practiced each of our crisis drills, which include the two mentioned above, at least once since the start of school. They have done an excellent job following all of the safety directions which allows them to get to their designated safe areas quickly, quietly, and safely.

Fall Benchmark Data In September all students com-pleted the second year of the aims-webPlus curriculum based measure-ments that are aligned with the common core standards. The teach-ers review the results to determine how best to support each student with their learning. Results from these assessments are typically normed from the re-sults of all other Dist. 204 students in the same grade level. They are not nationally normed since stu-dents in 204 typically score at least a quartile higher on nationally normed assessments. Your child’s teacher will review this information with you during conferences.

“It takes each of us to make a difference for all of us.” - Jackie Mutcheson

CC! Wise Words of the Week! Each week during morning announcements we focus on a character trait and discuss what behaviors we would see or words we would hear when a person pos-sesses each trait. We ask you to support us at home by discussing with your child the importance of developing these char-acter traits and when these traits are particularly important in various real life situations. Thank you for supporting our efforts in educating the students in character as well as academics.

October 10th: Honesty October 16th: Perseverance October 23rd: Integrity

October 30th: Respect CHARACTER COUNTS! second pillar of character November 6th: Pride November 13th: Reverence
