What is Work-Based Learning?

Work-Based Learning involves the development of job skills and an

opportunity for career exploration by providing the student with work experience that is coordinated with the educational program.

Work-Based Learning may include paid or unpaid internship, pre-apprenticeship, registered apprenticeship, and practicums required for a state-regulated or industry-recognized credential.

WBL 3100 - FTE

1D SBCCC 300.10(c)(3)Student membership hours may be reported for budget FTE as regularly scheduled or non-regularly scheduled as defined in 1G SBCCC 200.94(a)-(b).

WBL 3100 192 maximum hours Tier 3This course provides a work-based learning experience with a college-approved employer in an area related to the student's program of study. Emphasis is placed on integrating classroom learning with related work experience. Upon completion, students should be able to evaluate career selection, demonstrate employability skills, and satisfactorily perform work-related competencies.

Course must meet standards of 1D SBCCC 300.10

WBL Course Section Criteria

• Course code – WBL 3100

• Course hours – minimum 20; maximum 160

• WBL 3100 course sections must• Include the following components

• Student orientation – not to exceed 4 hours

• Post-training evaluation (student and employer) – not to exceed 2 hours

• Link with a WCE course that meets the following criteria:• Scheduled for 96 hours or more

• Aligned with a state-regulated or industry-recognized credential

• Aligned with skill development associated with identified Measurable Learning Outcomes of WBL experience

Course Setup Example

Workforce CE Course• AHR 3131 HVAC

• Scheduled hours – 200 • Course intent: Principles of heating and cooling systems with emphasis on safety, theory

and principles of refrigeration, types of heating/cooling systems, Ohm's law, load calculation, troubleshooting using the various types of test equipment, servicing, repairing and installing components/entire systems and employment of customer service techniques.

• Credential: North American Technician Excellence (NATE)

• WBL 3100 Work-Based Learning• Scheduled hours – 100

• Orientation – 2 hours• WBL experience – 97 hours• Post Training Evaluation – 1 hour

Student Eligibility - WBL

Students must meet the following criteria:

• Age and employment under G.S. 95-25.5 Youth employment

• Enrolled in a related Workforce CE course

• Completed at minimum 48 instructional hours prior to entering WBL experience

• Submits an application for placement in a WBL course

• Meets job specific requirements

Students may work at multiple job sites and be supervised by multiple employers during work-based learning experience.

• Learning experiences must be consistently related to the WCE course expectations

• Supervise WBL experiences

• Employer is responsible for supervision of student while on job site

• Retain student file documentation

• Transcript showing related WCE course registration

• Completed WBL application

• Measurable Learning Outcomes**

• Minimum 3 MLOs related to experiences that student will obtain while

working

• Student, college and employer development/agreement of MLOs

• Agreement of expectations signed by student, college and employer prior to

the beginning of the WBL experience.

**Registered Apprenticeship or Pre-Apprenticeship documentation may be

used in lieu of MLOs

• Consultation between employer, college and student

• College staff site visit of student at employer job site (minimum 1 site visit)

• Evaluation of student by employer

• Student hour timesheets or other related reports of participation
