Work from Home – WB 29-6-20 – Year 6
Hello Year 6, hope you are all well and staying safe and busy. For the next week, you can work through the following tasks at you
leisure if you wish. It is a good idea to work through one task per day per subject which is outlined below. Please see the school
website for links to resources. If you do want extra work, remember all of the online links are still open and available!

Where did Alex walk to?
Why did Alex take the glucose and caffeine tablets?
When was Alex moved out of the manor house?
Who was Alex introduced to on his first day at the training camp?
Clarify the meanings of words you do not know by using a dictionary?

Before watching the film discuss the title ‘Once in a Lifetime.’ Asking what does it mean?
Work from Home – WB 29-6-20 – Year 6
What type of things happen once in a lifetime?
Show the opening scene. Image of the airship in the sky. What colour is the sky? What mood or feeling does this
give us? Can we describe the clouds? What is strange about this ship?
Pause the film after 12 seconds when the man has his hand on his face. What happened? What do we call the
object that fell off his boat? How is the man feeling? Can we describe someone who is sad, only describing their
actions?
Pause the film as the man looks through his telescope. What do you think was making that noise? What is he
looking through? How do we spell telescope?
Pause as the turtle flies over his head How is the man feeling? What words can we think of to describe the
turtle?
Pause at 58 seconds as the man lassoes the turtle. Ask the children to think about parts of a turtle. Which
parts of a turtle can we name? Discuss that these are nouns. Think of two adjectives for each of these nouns.
E.g. huge, round eye
Pause the film at 1min 8 secs –when the turtle is towing the ship. How do you think the man is feeling now?
Where do you think the turtle is taking the man?
Pause the film just after the rope snaps. How is the man feeling now? . What will happen next? Watch the film
until the end
Where do you think the turtle will take him? What type of story do you think this is? If you were telling the
story which creature might you choose instead of a turtle? Why?

12-hour and 24-hour clocks
Time is measured using either the 12-hour clock or the 24-hour clock.
12-hour clock
The 12 hour clock notation uses am and pm to indicate morning and afternoon.
am is the time from 12 midnight and before 12 noon ( 12:00pm is midday)
pm is the time from 12 midday and before 12 midnight ( 12.00am is midnight)
When we want to convert a 12 hour clock into a 24 hour clock, we add 12 e.g. 3pm in 24 hour-clock is 15:00
For example
6.23pm becomes (6:23 + 12 = 18:23)
7:45pm becomes (7:45 + 12 = 19:45)
24-hour clock
The 24-hour clock does not require the use of am or pm. Afternoon is indicated by a number bigger than 12.

Topic
Some animals are at risk of becoming endangered because of pollution and climate change. This week, you will
produce a fact file on an endangered species of your choice.
Task
Research as much information as possible of an animal of your choice. Pick between the following:
The Great White Shark
Mountain Gorilla
Giant Panda
Bengal Tiger
Amur Leopard
Black Rhino
Galapogos Penguin
You must find out what they look like, what they eat, where they are from, their habitat and how many remain
in the wild.

Activity
Look at these clocks. What are the times shown on these clocks? Write your answers in digital time.

Topic
Take the place that your researched animal is from. You will need further research facts that explain why this
the animal is endangered.
For example – The Great White Shark lives in the sea. They are affected by the high levels of pollution such as,
plastic

Units of time
Watch the video clip that explains the concept of time -
This list below shows the units we use to measure time. It also shows the conversion from one unit to another.
seconds = minute
minutes = hour
hours = day
days = week
days = year ( days in a leap year)
Activity
1. How many minutes are in 240 seconds?
2. 300 seconds is the same as how many minutes?
3. How many hours in 7 days?
4. How many days in 3 weeks?
How many days in 3 leap years?
Topic
Produce a poster on the specific type of pollution that is causing harm to your chosen animal.
For example – Sea pollution affecting the Great White Shark.
Here are some topics you might want to focus on:
Deforestation
Pollution (plastic/air/sea)
Global Warming

Which has 28 days clear,
And 29 in each leap year.

Topic
You will now begin to create your fact file about your chosen endangered animal.
Split your fact file into sections and include subheadings and images.
