Overview: The Multidisciplinary Success Center at Chaffey College, Rancho Cucamonga is designed to address various student needs including, but not limited to, tutoring, access to technology and educational resources, workshops, and learning groups. The workshops and learning groups offered are designed to cultivate learning strategies, improve study and communication skills, nurture scholastic confidence, positive Mindset, foster Hope and goal setting, time management, test preparation, and increase overall student achievement. The Multidisciplinary Success Center offered several workshops and learning groups on the following topics:

• Active Reading Strategies • Goal Setting • Hope • Learning Strategies • Learning Styles • Mindset • Note-Taking • Overcoming Test Anxiety • Reading in the Sciences/Social Sciences • Study Skills • Test Preparation/Test-Taking • Time Management

Methodology: Working with the Instructional Assistants at the Multidisciplinary and Language Success Centers, the Office of Institutional Research developed a paper survey instrument in order to gauge student familiarity and knowledge on various topics both before and after participating in workshops and learning groups at the center. The instrument also surveyed how much students felt the workshop or learning group will contribute to success in their courses. The data presented in this report reflects workshops and learning groups offered in the Fall 2014, Spring 2015, and Summer 2015 semesters.

Participants rated their knowledge on a specific topic ranging from 1-No Knowledge to 5-Very Knowledgeable both before and after participating in the workshop or learning group. These ratings were compared to measure improvement or increase in knowledge level after participating in the workshop or learning group. Participants were also asked to rate the likelihood that the workshop or learning group would contribute to success in class, rating the contribution on a scale from 1-Unlikely to 5-Very Likely.

Taking it a step further, students were given an opportunity to comment about new information acquired at the workshop/learning group and how they will incorporate their new knowledge and/or skills into future academic assignments. These comments, organized by workshop or learning group topic, can be viewed in Appendices 1 and 2, at the conclusion of the report.

Pre-Post Workshop Results

A comparison of pre and post workshop ratings was conducted using a paired-samples t-test analysis. The results, as displayed in Table 3, show a significant increase in the level of familiarity and knowledge on all topics after attending the workshops at the Multidisciplinary Success Center. Students were also likely to report that the workshops will contribute to success in their courses. The most prominent increases in knowledge can be observed with regards to goal setting, Hope, note-taking skills, strategies in overcoming test anxiety, and Mindset. Overall, note-taking skills showed one of the highest increases in skill and knowledge as well as the strongest likelihood that the growth in knowledge will lead to course success. Corresponding effect sizes show all of the pre-post changes to be both positive and meaningful. Average overall ratings can be examined at the end of the Pre, Post. Effect Size, and Success columns.

Overall, knowledge of the Hope concept and how it can positively effect change in student success showed the highest increase after learning group attendance. Corresponding effect sizes show all of the pre-post changes to be both positive and meaningful, with the exception of the note-taking learning group, which showed no change in knowledge level.
