Traditional Worship (11:00)*You may leave your cell phones ON, but set to vibrate or silent, please*
Feel free to share on social media that you are here at La Plata Church to
celebrate and worship the risen Lord!
Prayer Before Worship:O God, I realize today that I am only one. I am one among
billions! Yet today I also realize that today we are ALL one. All who
call your Son Jesus Savior. All who listen for your still, small voice.
All who have been saved by grace. We are ONE through Jesus
Christ, our Lord. As I come to the communion table this morning,
remind me I am one with all, across the ages, and across the world
that will stand before the Lord and receive the gifts of bread and
the fruit of the vine for our spiritual nourishment, power, and
peace. We are ONE, Lord. Lord, make us ONE. Amen.

Heal the divisions separating your children one from another, so
that they will make fast, with bonds of peace, the unity which the
Spirit gives. Amen. ~a prayer from brothers and sisters in Zaire

The flowers on the altar are given to theglory of God, and in thankfulness of God’sblessings on their 10 years of marriage, by
Carl & Kathy Greene
The Scripture Lessons1 Peter 3: 18-22 (NIV) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring
you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After
being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to
those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of
Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were
saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you
also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience
toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into
heaven and is at God's right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in
submission to him.
John 6: 1-13 (NIV)Some time after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is,
the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they
saw the signs he had performed by healing the sick. Then Jesus went up on a
mountainside and sat down with his disciples. The Jewish Passover Festival
was near.
When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to
Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" He asked this only
to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.
Philip answered him, "It would take more than half a year's wages to buy
enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, "Here is a
boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go
among so many?"
Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place,
and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the
loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they
wanted. He did the same with the fish.
When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the
pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." So they gathered them and
filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those
who had eaten.
Living Into God’s Word1. Who do you call “family”?
2. What is called the “universal” Language?
3. What or who unites us as one?
4. How can someone who does not look or sound like us befamily?
5. What does the Bread represent in communion?
6. What does the fruit of the vine represent in communion?
7. How is the Holy Spirit present in communion?
8. Does everyone agree on everything in your family? Do we,as a church have to agree on everything to remain family?
9. How is communion a way to connect with Jesus?
10. Our whole family is gathered at one service. Findsomeone you do NOT know and introduce yourself. They areyour brother/sister in the family of God!

CIVIL WAR BUS TOUR - Garth Bowling will be giving a bus tour of Charles County Civil War sites. The
bus will leave the church parking lot at 9:00 AM on Saturday, October 12. We will stop for lunch at
Captain Billy's Restaurant in Pope's Creek, after lunch, the tour will continue until about 3:00 PM, and
then return to the church parking lot. Please call the church office to reserve your seat on the bus. The
cost is $12 per person and can be paid the morning of the tour. Garth has recently published his book
called Gateway to the Confederacy: Charles County, Maryland, and will have it available for purchase.
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS - Look for the hungry little cow in Fellowship Hall 2 during the Café
Service, and later in the lobby after the 11:00 AM service. She needs to be fed - and she only eats
money. She wants to get fat and sassy to support "Help for Pets" a local organization that provides
seniors and others who cannot afford to take care of their pets with food, and other necessary supplies
so that they can keep their beloved animals at home. But she's more than that. She's also the key to
watching our Pastor kiss a real cow at our October 27th Blessing of the Animals event. She's promised
to do it if we can raise $1000.00 for "Help for pets". So help little "Susie" pucker up and drop your
donations in this Sunday. And bring your friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers along with
their animals to receive a blessing on October 27. See our website for more details. NEW: you can
also donate to "kiss the cow" through our online giving service.
HARVEST DINNER - Our Annual Harvest Dinner will be held on Friday, November 1, from 4:30 - 7:30
in the Fellowship Hall. We need everyone's help to continue this successful fundraiser, so please
invite your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. The menu features ham, roast turkey, dressing,
mashed potatoes and gravy, candied sweet potatoes, green beans, kale, cranberries, rolls, drinks, and
dessert. Carry-out meals are available. Adult tickets are $20, children (aged 5 to 10) are $5.
Carry-out meals are $20. It takes a lot of hands to make this work, so if you can lend yours, it would
be appreciated. Please contact Bonnie Thompson at 240-298-5389 if you would like to help.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS - Have you ever wondered about Spiritual gifts? Do you know what spiritual gifts
you possess? Perhaps, you wonder if your spiritual gifts have changed over the years, because as
Ecclesiastics 3 reminds us, everything has a season, and therefore we grow and change over time. In
the coming weeks we are going to ask everyone to complete a Spiritual Gifts Inventory. These will
be kept confidential and only you will see your own unique results. Remember, 1 Corinthians 12:7
(NLV) says…"The Holy Spirit works in each person in one way or another for the good of all." We look
forward to having you all participate in this venture.
HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR AND BAKE SALE - Are you a crafter? Do you own your own business? Call the
church office, 301-934-2288 to get your application to rent space at our Holiday Craft Fair and Bake
Sale scheduled for Saturday, November 23 at 8:00 AM. We are asking for donations of your gently
used Christmas decorations for our "Recycled Christmas", and books of all kinds for our used book sale.
Please call the church office to schedule a time to deliver your items.
APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT (ASP) - 2020 interest? Yes, it seems like we just got back. But, we
can begin reserving space for summer 2020 trips on Sept. 16. Please reply to John Carns (text/cell -
301.848.0060 or e-mail - [email protected] ) to let him know which trip (High School or Middle
School) and how many folks might be interested. We just need an approximate head count for now.
You can also connect with John if you have any questions.
COUNTDOWN FOR CHILDREN - The Countdown for Children ages 4 and up has begun. If your child
likes to sing or play an instrument (or even if you just want to have fun with other kids and teens your
age), please consider joining the Cherub Choir and Crimson Angels. , if you needed a little more
incentive to join us, there is a direct connection between participating in music activities (beyond
simply listening with headphones) is shown to improve academic performance and achievement.
Cherub Choir is for those who are 4 years old and some elementary school. Crimson Angels is for older
children to include middle and high school. There also are options for specialty groups for solos,
duets, and targeted performances. Beginning September 18, choirs meet every Wednesday from 7
p.m. until 7:45 p.m. in the downstairs music room. Check out past music performances at
www.laplataumc.org/media (we are at the bottom of the page). We love and welcome children of all
ages, backgrounds and faiths. For more details, email: [email protected].
WORSHIPWORSHIP SCHEDULE - The Sunday morning worship schedule is: Café Worship at 8:30 AM in
Fellowship Hall 2, and Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary at 11:00 AM.

Sunday morning service. If your little one becomes unsettled and is in need of more care, please
contact an usher who can direct you to the nursery or to the rocking chairs in the back. We are grateful
to the staff and volunteers that help us provide a nursery each week.
If you are a parent or a grandparent of young children, or you just want to spend some time with
the youngest in our congregation, consider signing up to volunteer in the Nursery. To volunteer, or
for information, contact Alyssa Wheeler at [email protected].
HEARING ASSIST DEVICES - are available, please see an usher to obtain one.\
SERVICE & CARINGFOOD PANTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP - The Food Pantry is requesting your donations of the following
items, grape jelly, canned peaches, pears, mandarin oranges, applesauce, (no peel off cups please),
pasta meal bags, baked beans, soups, children's juice boxes, snack items for kids (individual wrapped
cookies, cheese crackers etc.). You may place your donated items in the Food Donation Box in the front
entrance. Pet food donations are always appreciated. You can also make monetary donations, just
write "Food Pantry" in the memo line of your check, or give online.
FAITH SHARINGPLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS - It is the simplest and most effective way to share Christ with others:
just invite your friends to church with you. Most people who grew up as Christians and who aren't
in a church say they just haven't found a church they like, and because no one has invited them. Most
people if you ask, will say yes to an invitation. Just ask them to come to church for a special event,
or special Sunday, or to hear a sermon you think will help them.
